Jonah 1
1. Now the word <01697> of the LORD <03068> came <01961> unto
Jonah
<03124> the son <01121> of Amittai <0573>, saying <0559>,
2 Arise <06965>, go <03212> to Nineveh <05210>, that great
<01419>
city <05892>, and cry <07121> against <05921> it; for their
wickedness <07451> is come <05927> up before <06440> me.
3 But Jonah <03124> rose <06965> up to flee <01272> unto
Tarshish
<08659> from the presence <06440> of the LORD <03068>, and went
<03381> down <03381> to Joppa <03305>; and he found <04672> a
ship
<0591> going <0935> to Tarshish <08659>: so he paid <05414> the
fare
<07939> thereof, and went <03381> down <03381> into it, to go
<0935>
with them unto Tarshish <08659> from the presence <06440> of the
LORD <03068>.
4. But the LORD <03068> sent <02904> out a great <01419> wind
<07307> into <0413> the sea <03220>, and there was a mighty
<01419>
tempest <05591> in the sea <03220>, so that the ship <0591> was
like
<02803> to be broken <07665>.
5 Then the mariners <04419> were afraid <03372>, and cried
<02199>
every man unto his god <0430>, and cast <02904> forth <02904> the
wares <03627> that [were] in the ship <0591> into <0413> the sea
<03220>, to lighten <07043> [it] of them. But Jonah <03124> was
gone
<03381> down <03381> into <0413> the sides <03411> of the ship
<05600>; and he lay <07901>, and was fast asleep <07290>.
6 So the shipmaster came <07126> to him, and said <0559> unto
him,
What <04100> meanest thou, O sleeper <07290>? arise <06965>, call
<07121> upon thy God <0430>, if <0194> so be that God <0430> will
think <06245> upon us, that we perish <06> not.
7 And they said <0559> every <0376> one <0376> to his fellow
<07453>, Come <03212>, and let us cast <05307> lots <01486>,
that we
may know <03045> for whose <04310> cause <07945> this <02063>
evil
<07451> [is] upon us. So they cast <05307> lots <01486>, and the
lot
<01486> fell <05307> upon Jonah <03124>.
8 Then said <0559> they unto him, Tell <05046> us, we pray
<04994>
thee, for whose cause <0834> this <02063> evil <07451> [is] upon
us;
What <04100> [is] thine occupation <04399>? and whence <0370>
comest
<0935> thou? what <04100> [is] thy country <0776>? and of what
people <05971> [art] thou?
9 And he said <0559> unto them, I [am] an Hebrew <05680>; and I
fear <03373> the LORD <03068>, the God <0430> of heaven <08064>,
which <0834> hath made <06213> the sea <03220> and the dry
<03004>
[land].
10 Then were the men <0582> exceedingly <01419> afraid <03372>,
and said <0559> unto him, Why <04100> hast thou done <06213> this
<02063>? For the men <0582> knew <03045> that he fled <01272>
from
the presence <06440> of the LORD <03068>, because <03588> he had
told <05046> them.
11. Then said <0559> they unto him, What <04100> shall we do
<06213> unto thee, that the sea <03220> may be calm <08367> unto
us?
for the sea <03220> wrought <01980>, and was tempestuous <05490>.
12 And he said <0559> unto them, Take <05375> me up, and cast
<02904> me forth <02904> into <0413> the sea <03220>; so shall
the
sea <03220> be calm <08367> unto you: for I know <03045> that
for my
sake <07945> this great <01419> tempest <05591> [is] upon you.
13 Nevertheless the men <0582> rowed <02864> hard to bring
<07725>
[it] to the land <03004>; but they could <03201> not: for the sea
<03220> wrought <01980>, and was tempestuous <05490> against
<05921>
them.
14 Wherefore they cried <07121> unto the LORD <03068>, and said
<0559>, We beseech <0577> thee, O LORD <03068>, we beseech <0577>
thee, let us not perish <06> for this <02088> man's <0376> life
<05315>, and lay <05414> not upon us innocent <05355> blood
<01818>:
for thou, O LORD <03068>, hast done <06213> as it pleased <02654>
thee.
15 So they took up Jonah <03124>, and cast <02904> him forth
<02904> into <0413> the sea <03220>: and the sea <03220> ceased
<05975> from her raging <02197>.
16 Then the men <0582> feared <03372> the LORD <03068>
exceedingly
<01419>, and offered <02076> a sacrifice <02077> unto the LORD
<03068>, and made vows <05088>.
17 Now the LORD <03068> had prepared <04487> a great <01419>
fish
<01709> to swallow <01104> up Jonah <03124>. And Jonah <03124>
was
in the belly <04578> of the fish <01709> three <07969> days
<03117>
and three <07969> nights <03915>.
Jonah 2
1. Then Jonah <03124> prayed <06419> unto the LORD <03068> his
God
<0430> out of the fish's <01710> belly <04578>,
2 And said <0559>, I cried <07121> by reason of mine affliction
<06869> unto the LORD <03068>, and he heard <06030> me; out of
the
belly <0990> of hell <07585> cried <07768> I, [and] thou heardest
<08085> my voice <06963>.
3 For thou hadst cast <07993> me into the deep <04688>, in the
midst <03824> of the seas <03220>; and the floods <05104>
compassed
<05437> me about: all <03605> thy billows <04867> and thy waves
<01530> passed <05674> over <05674> me.
4 Then I said <0559>, I am cast <01644> out of thy sight
<05869>;
yet <0389> I will look <05027> again <03254> toward <0413> thy
holy
<06944> temple <01964>.
5 The waters <04325> compassed <0661> me about, [even] to the
soul
<05315>: the depth <08415> closed <05437> me round <05437> about,
the weeds <05488> were wrapped <02280> about my head <07218>.
6 I went <03381> down <03381> to the bottoms of the mountains
<02022>; the earth <0776> with her bars <01280> [was] about
<01157>
me for ever <05769>: yet hast thou brought <05927> up my life
<02416> from corruption <07845>, O LORD <03068> my God <0430>.
7 When my soul <05315> fainted <05848> within <05921> me I
remembered <02142> the LORD <03068>: and my prayer <08605> came
<0935> in unto thee, into <0413> thine holy <06944> temple
<01964>.
8 They that observe <08104> lying <07723> vanities <01892>
forsake
<05800> their own mercy <02617>.
9 But I will sacrifice <02076> unto thee with the voice
<06963> of
thanksgiving <08426>; I will pay <07999> [that] that I have vowed
<05087>. Salvation <03444> [is] of the LORD <03068>.
10. And the LORD <03068> spake <0559> unto the fish <01709>,
and it
vomited <06958> out Jonah <03124> upon the dry <03004> [land].
Jonah 3
1. And the word <01697> of the LORD <03068> came <01961> unto
Jonah
<03124> the second <08145> time, saying <0559>,
2 Arise <06965>, go <03312> unto Nineveh <05210>, that great
<01419> city <05892>, and preach <07121> unto it the preaching
<07150> that I bid <01696> thee.
3 So Jonah <03124> arose <06965>, and went <03212> unto Nineveh
<05210>, according to the word <01697> of the LORD <03068>. Now
Nineveh <05210> was an exceeding <0430> great <01419> city
<05892>
of three <07969> days <03117>' journey <04109>.
4 And Jonah <03124> began <02490> to enter <0935> into the city
<05892> a day's <03117> journey <04109>, and he cried <07121>,
and
said <0559>, Yet <05750> forty <0705> days <03117>, and Nineveh
<05210> shall be overthrown <02015>.
5. So the people <0582> of Nineveh <05210> believed <0539> God
<0430>, and proclaimed <07121> a fast <06685>, and put <03847> on
sackcloth <08242>, from the greatest <01419> of them even to the
least <06996> of them.
6 For word <01697> came <05060> unto the king <04428> of
Nineveh
<05210>, and he arose <06965> from his throne <03678>, and he
laid
<05674> his robe <0155> from him, and covered <03680> [him] with
sackcloth <08242>, and sat <03427> in ashes <0665>.
7 And he caused [it] to be proclaimed <02199> and published
<0559>
through Nineveh <05210> by the decree <02940> of the king <04428>
and his nobles <01419>, saying <0559>, Let neither <0369> man
<0120>
nor beast <0929>, herd <01241> nor flock <06629>, taste <02938>
any
<03792> thing: let them not feed <07462>, nor <0408> drink
<08354>
water <04325>:
8 But let man <0120> and beast <0929> be covered <03680> with
sackcloth <08242>, and cry <07121> mightily <02393> unto God
<0430>:
yea, let them turn <07725> every <0376> one <0376> from his evil
<07451> way <01870>, and from the violence <02555> that [is] in
their hands <03709>.
9 Who <04310> can tell <03045> [if] God <0430> will turn
<07725>
and repent <05162>, and turn <07725> away from his fierce <02740>
anger <0639>, that we perish <06> not?
10 And God <0430> saw <07200> their works <04639>, that they
turned <07725> from their evil <07451> way <01870>; and God
<0430>
repented <05162> of the evil <07451>, that he had said <01696>
that
he would do <06213> unto them; and he did <06213> [it] not.
Jonah 4
1. But it displeased Jonah <03124> exceedingly <01419>, and he
was
very angry <02734>.
2 And he prayed <06419> unto the LORD <03068>, and said <0559>,
I
pray <0577> thee, O LORD <03068>, [was] not this <02088> my
saying
<01697>, when <05704> I was yet <05704> in my country <0127>?
Therefore I fled <01272> before <06924> unto Tarshish <08659>:
for I
knew <03045> that thou [art] a gracious <02587> God <0410>, and
merciful <07349>, slow <0750> to anger <0639>, and of great
<07227>
kindness <02617>, and repentest <05162> thee of the evil <07451>.
3 Therefore now <06258>, O LORD <03068>, take <03947>, I
beseech
<04994> thee, my life <05315> from me; for [it is] better <02896>
for me to die <04194> than to live <02416>.
4 Then said <0559> the LORD <03068>, Doest thou well <03190>
to be
angry <02734>?
5. So Jonah <03124> went <03318> out of the city <05892>, and
sat
<03427> on the east <06924> side <06924> of the city <05892>, and
there <08033> made <06213> him a booth <05521>, and sat <03427>
under <08478> it in the shadow <06738>, till <05704> he might see
<07200> what <04100> would become <01961> of the city <05892>.
6 And the LORD <03068> God <0430> prepared <04487> a gourd
<07021>, and made [it] to come <05927> up over <05921> Jonah
<03124>, that it might be a shadow <06738> over <05921> his head
<07218>, to deliver <05337> him from his grief <07451>. So Jonah
<03124> was exceeding <01419> glad <08056> of the gourd <07021>.
7 But God <0430> prepared <04487> a worm <08438> when the
morning
<07837> rose <05927> the next <04283> day <04283>, and it smote
<05221> the gourd <07021> that it withered <03001>.
8 And it came <01961> to pass, when the sun <08121> did arise
<02224>, that God <0430> prepared <04487> a vehement <02759> east
<06921> wind <07307>; and the sun <08121> beat <05221> upon the
head
<07218> of Jonah <03124>, that he fainted <05968>, and wished
<07592> in himself to die <04191>, and said <0559>, [It is]
better
<02896> for me to die <04191> than to live <02416>.
9 And God <0430> said <0559> to Jonah <03124>, Doest thou well
<03190> to be angry <02734> for the gourd <07021>? And he said
<0559>, I do well <03190> to be angry <02734>, [even] unto death
<04194>.
10 Then said <0559> the LORD <03068>, Thou hast had pity
<02347>
on <05921> the gourd <07021>, for the which <0834> thou hast not
laboured <05998>, neither <03808> madest it grow <01431>; which
came
<01961> up in a night <03915>, and perished <06> in a night
<03915>:
11 And should not I spare <02347> Nineveh <05210>, that great
<01419> city <05892>, wherein are more <07227> than sixscore
thousand <07239> persons <0120> that cannot <03808> discern
<03045>
between <0996> their right <03225> hand <03235> and their left
<08040> hand <08040>; and [also] much <07227> cattle <0929>?
