Caiaphas This was Joseph, surnamed Caiaphas, who succeeded Simon son of Camith, in the high-priesthood, about A.D. 25: About two years after our Lord's death he was deposed by the Vitellius governor of Syria; and unable to bear his disgrace, and perhaps the stings of conscience for the murder of Christ, he killed himself about A.D. 35: # jno 11:49 18:13,14,24 ac 4:5,6 Caiaphas # jno 18:13,14 lu 3:2 ac 4:6 Caiaphas # jno 11:49-52 Cainan. This Cainan is not found in the Hebrew text of any of the genealogies, but only in the Septuagint; from which, probably, the evangelist transcribed the register, as sufficiently exact for his purpose, and as more generally suited to command attention. # Ge 11:12 call # 2ki 2:12 6:21 13:14 job 32:21,22 ac 22:1 1co 4:15 1ti 5:1, 2 # he 12:9 call # lu 14:21 11:41 de 14:29 16:11,14 26:12,13 2sa 6:19 2ch 30: 24 # ne 8:10,12 job 29:13,15,16 31:16-20 pr 3:9,10 14:31 31:6,7 # is 58: 7,10 mat 14:14-21 15:32-39 22:10 ac 2:44,45 4:34,35 9:39 # ro 12:13-16 1ti 3:2 5:10 tit 1:8 phile 7 he 13:2 call # jno 11:28 mat 7:21,22 23:8-10 lu 6:46 ro 14:8,9 1co 8:6 # 12:3 phi 2:11 3:8 2pe 1:14-16 call # ac 9:21 7:59 22:16 ro 10:12-14 1co 1:2 2ti 2:22 call that these words ought not to be rendered passively, is evident from the LXX who translate the phrase 'he shall call on the name' which is active by # ge 4:26 12:8 13:4-7 call # 1ch 29:17,18 ps 17:1 66:18,19 pr 15:8 ac 9:14 1co 1:2 1ti 2:8 call # ga 3:3,4 phi 3:16 2jno 8 re 2:5 3:3 call # zep 3:9 mat 6:9;7:7-11 2co 1:2 ep 1:17;3:14 call upon him #ps 86:5; From their appearance, and the number of them, it was quite evident that a practice of keeping water in large pots, each holding from eighteen to twenty-seven gallons, was once common in the country.' The centurion was a military captain, and commander of a century, or 100 men. In order to have a proper notion of his office, it may be desirable to explain the construction and array of the Roman legion. Each legion was divided into ten cohorts, each cohort into three maniples, and each maniple into two centuries; so that there were thirty maniples, and sixty centuries in a legion, which, if the century had always, as the word imports, consisted of 100 soldiers, would have formed a combined phalanx of 6000 men. The number in a legion, however, varied at different periods; in the time of Polybius it was the hastati, or spearmen, occupied the front; the principiis, the second line; the triarii, (also called pilani, from their weapon, the pilam,) the third. The centurions were appointed by the tribunes, and generally selected from the common soldiers according to their merit; although t Cephas # 2pe 1:1 Cephas # 1co 9:5 15:5 jno 1:42 ga 2:9 Cephas # 1co 1:12 mat 8:14 mar 1:30 jno 1:42 Cephas # 1co 1:12 3:22 9:5 jno 1:42 certain # ac 10:45 9:38,42 11:12 2co 8:21 certain # ezr 7:6 mar 12:32-34 lu 9:57,58 1co 1:20 certain # mat 7:29 mar 2:6,7 7:21 lu 5:21 7:39,40 certain # mat 9:20-22 lu 8:43,44 certain # lu 23:27 mat 27:55,56 mar 15:40,41 16:1 jno 19:25 ac 1: 14 certain # ac 8:9-11 19:18,19 ex 22:18 le 20:6 de 18:10-12 1ch 10: 13 # is 8:19,20 certain # ac 21:20 Ga 2:4,12,13 certain # ac 15:22,27 10:23 11:12 certain # ac 17:4 13:48 is 55:10-11 mat 20:16 ro 11:5,6 certain # ac 23:21,30 25:3 ps 2:1-3 64:2-6 is 8:9,10 je 11:19 mat 26:4 certain # ac 25:7 18:15,19 23:29 certain # 2:9 ac 21:18-25 certain # ps 49:17 lu 12:20,21 16:22,23 Cesar # lu 2:1 jno 19:12-15 ac 17:7 25:8 Cesar # lu 3:1 ac 11:28 25:11,21 phi 4:22 Cesar's. The cruel, worthless, and diabolical Nero was at this time emperor of Rome; but it is not improbable that the empress Poppaea was favourably inclined to Christianity, as JOSEPHUS relates that [] `she was a worshipper of the true God.' Jerome states, (in Philem.) that St. Paul had converted many in Cesar's family; for `being by the emperor cast into prison, he became more known to his family, and turned the house of Christ's persecution into a church.' Cesarea Philippi. Cesarea Philippi was anciently called Paneas, from the mountain of Panium, or Hermon, at the foot of which it was situated, near the springs of Jordan; but Philip the tetrarch, the son of Herod the Great, having rebuilt it, gave it the name of Caesarea in honour of Tiberius, the reigning emperor, and he added his own name to it, to distinguish it from another Caesarea on the coast of the Mediterranean. It was afterwards named Neronias by the young Agrippa, in honour of Nero; and in the time of William of Tyre, it was called Belinas. It was, according to Josephus, a day's journey from Sidon, to Abulfeda, a journey of a day and a half from Damascus. Many have confounded it with Dan, or Leshem; but Eusebius and Jerome expressly affirm that Dan was four miles from Paneas, on the road to Tyre. It is now called Banias, and is described, by Seetzen, as a hamlet of about twenty miserab Cesarea # ac 10:1 21:8 23:23,33 25:4 Cesarea # ac 8:40 mat 16:13 Cesarea # ac 8:40 10:1,24 11:11 18:22 23:23 Cesarer # ac 8:40 9:30 10:1 18:22 23:23 chambering # 1co 6:9,10 ga 5:19 ep 5:3-5 col 3:5 1th 4:3-5 2pe 2: 14,18-20 j 23 Chanaan # ge 12:5 17:8 ps 135:11 change # is 65:15 66:19-21 ho 3:4 ga 3:19,23 4:3-5 he 7:11-19 8: 6-13 # he 9:9-11 10:1-18 12:26-28 changed # 1:25 ps 106:20 je 2:11 changed #1:23 changed # phi 3:21 charge # 1ti 4:6,11 5:7 6:3,10,17 ga 1:6,7 ep 4:14 col 2:6-11 tit 1:9-11 # 2jno 7,9,10 re 2:1,2,14,20 charge # 1ti 1:11,12 4:14 6:13,14,20 2ti 2:2 4:1-3 charge # 1ti 6:13 1th 5:27 2ti 2:14 4:1 Charge # 1ti 6:13 1:3 5:21 charge # 2ti 2:14 1ti 5:21 6:13 chargeable # 6 ne 5:15,18 1co 9:7,18 2co 11:9,12:13,14 charged # mat 8:4 17:9 mar 8:30 9:9 lu 9:21,36 charged # nu 27:19 de 3:28,31:14 ep 4:17 1ti 5:7,21,6:13,17 2ti 4:1 charging # 2ti 4:1 ep 4:17 1th 4:1 2th 3:6 1ti 5:21 6:13 charity # 1co 13:1-8 8:1,3 2co 5:10,15 ga 5:6 1jno 2:10 4:7-18 charity # 1co 13:1-8,13 2ti 2:22 2pe 1:7 charity # col 2:2 jno 13:34 15:12 ro 13:8 1co 13:1-13 ep 5:2 1th 4:9 # 1ti 1:5 1pe 4:8 2pe 1:7 1jno 3:23 4:21 charity # mar 12:28-34 ro 14:15 1co 8:1-3 1co 8:1-3 13:1-13 14:1 1pe 4:8 # 2pe 1:7 charity # 1co 14:1 charity # 1co 13:1-8 ga 6:10 col 3:14 1th 5:15 1pe 3:8 1jno 4:21 charity # 1co 13:1-8 col 3:14 1th 3:6 2th 1:3 1ti 1:5 1pe 4:8 2pe 1:7 Charran # ge 11:31 12:5 29:4 chief priests # mat 26:47 27:12 1ch 24:1-19 ne 12:7 chief # ps 2:1-5 jno 11:47 ac 4:25-28 chief # jno 3:1 ac 5:34 chief # ac 23:17 24:7,22 25:23 jno 18:12 chief # mat 21:15,23 26:3,47 27:1 1ch 24:4 2ch 36:14 ezr 10:5 ne 12:7 # ps 2:2 jno 7:32 18:3 chief priests # 1ch 24:1 chief priests # mat 27:1,2 ps 2:1-6 ac 4:27,28 chief # mar 14:1 ps 2:1-5 ac 4:5-8,27,28 chief # mat 27:12 lu 23:2-5 jno 18:29-31 19:6,7,12 chief priests # mat 26:3,4 mar 11:18 12:12 14:1 jno 7:19,44 8:37- 40 10:39 11:53-57 chief # 1ch 24:1-31 chief priest # jno 19:15 mat 27:22 mar 15:12-15 lu 22:21-23 ac 2: 23 3:13-15 # 7:52 13:27-29 chief # ac 18:17 13:15 mar 5:35 chief # ac 18:8 chief # ac 19:10 16:6 pr 16:7 chief # ac 22:25,26 16:38,39 chief # ac 21:31-33 23:23-32 pr 4:16 chief # ac 13:7 18:12 23:24 child # lu 1:15 2:40,52 ju 13:24,25 1sa 3:19,20 child # lu 2:52 ju 13:24 1sa 2:18,26 3:19 ps 22:9 is 53:1,2 children # jno 13:33 21:5 ga 4:19 1jno 2:1 4:4 5:21 children # zec 8:5 children of this # lu 20:34 ps 17:14 1co 3:18 phi 3:19 children of light # jno 12:36 ep 5:8 1th 5:5 1pe 2:9 1jno 3:10 children # ac 13:15,17,46 3:26 2ch 20:7 ps 105:6 147:19,20 is 41: 8 48:1 # is 51:1,2 mat 3:9 10:6 lu 24:47 children # ep 2:2 ro 9:22 children # ep 2:2,3 children # is 57:4 eze 16:45,46 ep 2:2,3 1pe 1:14 2pe 2:14 children #4:17; Mary Magdalene, was well as Peter, was evidently at the sepulchre twice on that morning of the resurrection. The first time of her going was some short time before her companions, the other Mary and Salome; and observing that the stone had been removed, she returned to inform Peter and John. In the meantime, the other Mary and Salome came to the sepulchre, and saw the angel, as recorded by Matthew and Mark. While these women returned to the city, Peter and John went to the sepulchre, passing them at some distance, or going another way, followed by Mary Magdalene, who stayed after their return. This was her second journey; when she saw to angels, and then Jesus himself, as here related; and immediately after Jesus appeared to the other women, as they returned to the city. In the meantime Joanna and her company arrived at the sepulchre, when two angels appeared to them, and addressed them comfort # col 2:2 is 40:1 61:2,3 2co 1:4 2:7 1th 2:11 3:2 4:18 5: 11,14 # 2th 2:17 comfort #2:16 is 51:3,12;57:15;61:1,2;66:13 ro 15:13 2co 1:3-6 comfort # 1co 14:31 2co 1:4 2:7 ep 6:22 col 4:8 1th 2:11 3:2 4: 18 # 1th 5:11-14 comfort # 2:7-12 is 35:3,4,40:1,2,11 eze 34:16 mat 12:20 lu 22: 32 # jno 21:15-17 ro 14:1,15:1-3 ga 6:1,2 he 12:12 comfort. or, exhort. # he 10:24,25 comfort. or, exhort # he 3:13,10:25 comforted # 2co 2:13 1co 16:17,18 1th 3:2,6,7 3jno 2-4 Comforter # jno 14:16 comforter # jno 7:39 14:16,17,26 15:26 comforteth # 2co 7:6,7 ps 86:17 is 12:1 49:10 51:3,12 52:9 66:12, 13 jno 14:16 # jno 14:18,26 2th 2:16,17 comfortless, or orphans # la 5:3 ho 14:3 coming # mar 5:2-5 lu 8:27,29 coming # mat 3:16 jno 1:31-34 coming # lu 2:27 coming # ac 1:21 nu 27:16,17 2sa 5:2 1ki 3:7 ps 121:8 jno 10:9 ga 1:18 coming revelation # lu 17:30 col 3:4 2th 1:7 1ti 6:14,15 1pe 1: 13 4:13 5:4 # 1jno 3:2 coming # mal 3:2;4:5 mat 17:1-5 mar 9:2 lu 9:28-32 jno 1:14 1jno 4:14 # 1:1-3;4:14 coming # re 13:1 11:7 17:8 coming # re 21:10 ga 4:25,26 coming # mat 16:28 mal 3:2 4:5 ja 5:8 2pe 3:4 command # ge 3:1-5 25:29-34 ex 16:3 nu 11:4-6 ps 78:17-20 he 12: 16 command # 2co 3:1 commanded # eze 3:17-21 33:2-9 mat 24:45-47 lu 12:36-40 ac 20:29- 31 commanded # ac 4:15 commanded # le 25:39 2ki 4:1 ne 5:5,8 is 50:1 commanded # mar 5:8 ac 19:12-16 commanded # lu 24:49 commanded # jno 4:2 1co 1:13-17 ga 3:27 commanded # da 2:11-13 mat 2:16 jno 12:10,11 commanded # ac 22:5 5:21 23:15 mat 10:17 commanding # mat 28:20 jno 15:10,14 ac 1:2 10:42 1th 4:2 2th 3:6, 10 # 1ti 6:14 commanding # ac 23:30,35 25:5,15,16 commandments # is 29:13 mat 15:9 mar 7:7 col 2:22 commandments # de 12:32 col 2:22 1ti 4:1-3 re 14:11,12 22:18 commendeth #5:20 jno 15:13 ep 1:6-8;
