1Samuel 1

 1. Now there was a certain <0259> man <0376> of Ramathaimzophim

<07436>, of mount <02022> Ephraim <0669>, and his name <08034>

[was] Elkanah <0511>, the son <01121> of Jeroham <03395>, the

son <01121> of Elihu <0453>, the son <01121> of Tohu <08459>,

the son <01121> of Zuph <06689>, an Ephrathite <0673>:

2 And he had two <08147> wives <0802>; the name <08034> of the

one <0259> [was] Hannah <02584>, and the name <08034> of the

other <08145> Peninnah <06444>: and Peninnah <06444> had <01961>

children <03206>, but Hannah <02584> had no <0369> children

<03206>.

3 And this <01931> man <0376> went <05927> up out of his city

<05892> yearly <03117> to worship <07812> and to sacrifice

<02076> unto the LORD <03068> of hosts <06635> in Shiloh <07887>.

And the two <08147> sons <01121> of Eli <05941>, Hophni <02652>

and Phinehas <06372>, the priests <03548> of the LORD <03068>,

[were] there <08033>.

4 And when the time <03117> was that Elkanah <0511> offered

<02076>, he gave <05414> to Peninnah <06444> his wife <0802>,

and to all <03605> her sons <01121> and her daughters <01121>,

portions <04490>:

 5 But unto Hannah <02584> he gave <05414> a worthy <0639>

portion <04490>; for he loved <0157> Hannah <02584>: but the

LORD <03068> had shut <05462> up her womb <07358>.

6 And her adversary <06869> also <01571> provoked <03707> her

sore <03708>, for to make her fret <07481>, because <03588> the

LORD <03068> had shut <05462> up her womb <07358>.

7 And [as] he did <06213> so <03651> year <08141> by year

<08141>, when <01767> she went <05927> up to the house <01004>

of the LORD <03068>, so <03651> she provoked <03707> her;

therefore she wept <01058>, and did <06213> not eat <0398>.

8 Then said <0559> Elkanah <0511> her husband <0376> to her,

Hannah <02584>, why <04100> weepest <01058> thou? and why

<04100> eatest <0398> thou not? and why <04100> is thy heart

<03824> grieved <07489>? [am] not I better <02896> to thee than

ten <06235> sons <01121>?

 9. So Hannah <02584> rose <06965> up after <0310> they had

eaten <0398> in Shiloh <07887>, and after <0310> they had drunk

<08354>. Now Eli <05941> the priest <03548> sat <03427> upon a

seat <03678> by a post <04201> of the temple <01964> of the LORD

<03068>.

10 And she [was] in bitterness <04751> of soul <05315>, and

prayed <06419> unto the LORD <03068>, and wept <01058> sore.

 11 And she vowed <05087> a vow <05088>, and said <0559>, O LORD

<03068> of hosts <06635>, if <0518> thou wilt indeed look

<07200> on the affliction <06040> of thine handmaid <0519>, and

remember <02142> me, and not forget <07911> thine handmaid

<0519>, but wilt give <05414> unto thine handmaid <0519> a man

<0582> child <02233>, then I will give <05414> him unto the LORD

<03068> all <03605> the days <03117> of his life <02416>, and

there shall no <03808> razor <04177> come <05927> upon his head

<07218>.

12 And it came <01961> to pass, as she continued <07235>

praying <06419> before <06440> the LORD <03068>, that Eli

<05941> marked <08104> her mouth <06310>.

 13 Now Hannah <02584>, she spake <01696> in her heart <03820>;

only <07535> her lips <08193> moved <05128>, but her voice

<06963> was not heard <08085>: therefore Eli <05941> thought

<02803> she had been drunken <07910>.

14 And Eli <05941> said <0559> unto her, How <05704> long

<03117> wilt thou be drunken <07937>? put <05493> away <05493>

thy wine <03196> from thee.

15 And Hannah <02584> answered <06030> and said <0559>, No

<03808>, my lord <0113>, I [am] a woman <0802> of a sorrowful

<07186> spirit <07307>: I have drunk <07937> neither <03808>

wine <03196> nor strong drink <07941>, but have poured <08210>

out my soul <05315> before <06440> the LORD <03068>.

16 Count <05414> not thine handmaid <0519> for a daughter

<01323> of Belial <01100>: for out of the abundance <07230> of

my complaint <07878> and grief <03708> have I spoken <01696>

hitherto.

17 Then Eli <05941> answered <06030> and said <0559>, Go

<03212> in peace <07965>: and the God <0430> of Israel <03478>

grant <05414> [thee] thy petition <07596> that thou hast asked

<07592> of him.

18 And she said <0559>, Let thine handmaid <08198> find <04672>

grace <02580> in thy sight <05869>. So the woman <0802> went

<03212> her way <01870>, and did eat <0398>, and her countenance

<06440> was no <03808> more <05750> [sad].

 19. And they rose <07925> up in the morning <01242> early

<07925>, and worshipped <07812> before <06440> the LORD <03068>,

and returned <07725>, and came <0935> to their house <01004> to

Ramah <07414>: and Elkanah <0511> knew <03045> Hannah <02584>

his wife <0802>; and the LORD <03068> remembered <02142> her.

20 Wherefore it came <01961> to pass, when the time <03117> was

come <08622> about after Hannah <02584> had conceived <02030>,

that she bare <03205> a son <01121>, and called <07121> his name

<08034> Samuel <08050>, [saying], Because <03588> I have asked

<07592> him of the LORD <03068>.

21 And the man <0376> Elkanah <0511>, and all <03605> his house

<01004>, went <05927> up to offer <02076> unto the LORD <03068>

the yearly <03117> sacrifice <02077>, and his vow <05088>.

22 But Hannah <02584> went <05927> not up; for she said <0559>

unto her husband <0376>, [I will not go up] until <05704> the

child <05288> be weaned <01580>, and [then] I will bring <0935>

him, that he may appear <07200> before the LORD <03068>, and

there <08033> abide <03427> for ever <05769>.

23 And Elkanah <0511> her husband <0376> said <0559> unto her,

Do <06213> what seemeth <05869> thee good <02896>; tarry <03427>

until <05704> thou have weaned <01580> him; only <0389> the LORD

<03068> establish <06965> his word <01697>. So the woman <0802>

abode <03427>, and gave her son <01121> suck <03243> until

<05704> she weaned <01580> him.

24 And when <0834> she had weaned <01580> him, she took <05927>

him up with her, with three <07969> bullocks <06499>, and one

<0259> ephah <0374> of flour <07058>, and a bottle <05035> of

wine <03196>, and brought <0935> him unto the house <01004> of

the LORD <03068> in Shiloh <07887>: and the child <05288> [was]

young <05288>.

 25 And they slew <07819> a bullock <06499>, and brought <0935>

the child <05288> to Eli <05941>.

26 And she said <0559>, Oh <0994> my lord <0113>, [as] thy soul

<05315> liveth <02416>, my lord <0113>, I [am] the woman <0802>

that stood <05324> by thee here <02088>, praying <06419> unto

the LORD <0113>.

 27 For this <02088> child <05288> I prayed <06419>; and the

LORD <03068> hath given <05414> me my petition <07596> which

<0834> I asked <07592> of him:

28 Therefore also <01571> I have lent <07592> him to the LORD

<03068>; as long <03117> as he liveth <03117> he shall be lent

<07592> to the LORD <03068>. And he worshipped <07812> the LORD

<03068> there <08033>.

1Samuel 2

 1. And Hannah <02584> prayed <06419>, and said <0559>, My heart

<03820> rejoiceth <05970> in the LORD <03068>, mine horn <07161>

is exalted <07311> in the LORD <03068>: my mouth <06310> is

enlarged <07337> over <05921> mine enemies <0341>; because

<03588> I rejoice <08055> in thy salvation <03444>.

2 [There is] none <0369> holy <06918> as the LORD <03068>: for

[there is] none <0369> beside <01115> thee: neither <0369> [is

there] any rock <06697> like our God <0430>.

3 Talk <01696> no <0408> more <07235> so exceeding proudly

<01364>; let [not] arrogancy <06277> come <03318> out of your

mouth <06310>: for the LORD <03068> [is] a God <0410> of

knowledge <01844>, and by him actions <05949> are weighed

<08505>.

4 The bows <07198> of the mighty <01368> men [are] broken

<02744>, and they that stumbled <03782> are girded <0247> with

strength <02428>.

5 [They that were] full <07646> have hired <07936> out

themselves for bread <03899>; and [they that were] hungry

<07456> ceased <02308>: so <05704> that the barren <06135> hath

born <03205> seven <07651>; and she that hath many <07227>

children <01121> is waxed feeble <0535>.

6 The LORD <03068> killeth <04191>, and maketh alive <02421>:

he bringeth <03381> down <03381> to the grave <07585>, and

bringeth <05927> up.

7 The LORD <03068> maketh poor <03423>, and maketh rich <06238>:

he bringeth <08213> low <08213>, and lifteth <07311> up.

8 He raiseth <06965> up the poor <01800> out of the dust

<06083>, [and] lifteth <07311> up the beggar <034> from the

dunghill <0830>, to set <03427> [them] among <05973> princes

<05081>, and to make them inherit <05157> the throne <03678> of

glory <03519>: for the pillars <04690> of the earth <0776> [are]

the LORD'S <03068>, and he hath set <07896> the world <08398>

upon them.

9 He will keep <08104> the feet <07272> of his saints <02623>,

and the wicked <07563> shall be silent <01826> in darkness

<02822>; for by strength <03581> shall no <03808> man <0376>

prevail <01396>.

10 The adversaries <07378> of the LORD <03068> shall be broken

<02865> to pieces; out of heaven <08064> shall he thunder

<07481> upon them: the LORD <03068> shall judge <01777> the ends

<0657> of the earth <0776>; and he shall give <05414> strength

<05797> unto his king <04428>, and exalt <07311> the horn

<07161> of his anointed <04899>.

 11. And Elkanah <0511> went <03212> to Ramah <07414> to his

house <01004>. And the child <05288> did <01961> minister

<08334> unto the LORD <03068> before Eli <05941> the priest

<03548>.

12 Now the sons <01121> of Eli <05941> [were] sons <01121> of

Belial <01100>; they knew <03045> not the LORD <03068>.

13 And the priests <03548>' custom <04941> with the people

<05971> [was, that], when any <03605> man <0376> offered <02076>

sacrifice <02077>, the priest's <03548> servant <05288> came

<0935>, while the flesh <01320> was in seething <01310>, with a

fleshhook <04207> of three <07969> teeth <08127> in his hand

<03027>;

14 And he struck <05221> [it] into the pan <03595>, or <0176>

kettle <01731>, or caldron <07037>, or pot <06517>; all <03605>

that the fleshhook <04207> brought <05927> up the priest <03548>

took <03947> for himself. So <03602> they did <06213> in Shiloh

<07887> unto all <03605> the Israelites <03478> that came <0935>

thither <08033>.

15 Also <01571> before <02962> they burnt <06999> the fat

<02459>, the priest's <03548> servant <05288> came <0935>, and

said <0559> to the man <0376> that sacrificed <02076>, Give

<05414> flesh <01320> to roast <06740> for the priest <03548>;

for he will not have <03947> sodden <01310> flesh <01320> of

thee, but raw <02416>.

16 And [if] any man <0376> said <0559> unto him, Let them not

fail to burn <06999> the fat <02459> presently <03117>, and

[then] take <03947> [as much] as thy soul <05315> desireth

<08378>; then he would answer <0559> him, [Nay]; but thou shalt

give <05414> [it me] now: and if <0518> not, I will take <03947>

[it] by force <02394>.

17 Wherefore the sin <02403> of the young <05288> men was very

<03966> great <01419> before the LORD <03068>: for men <0582>

abhorred <05006> the offering <04503> of the LORD <03068>.

18 But Samuel <08050> ministered <08334> before the LORD

<03068>, [being] a child <05288>, girded <02296> with a linen

<0906> ephod <0646>.

 19 Moreover his mother <0517> made <06213> him a little <06996>

coat <04598>, and brought <05927> [it] to him from year <03117>

to year <03117>, when she came <05927> up with her husband

<0376> to offer <02076> the yearly <03117> sacrifice <02077>.

20 And Eli <05941> blessed <01288> Elkanah <0511> and his wife

<0802>, and said <0559>, The LORD <03068> give <07760> thee seed

<02233> of this <02063> woman <0802> for the loan <07596> which

<0834> is lent <07592> to the LORD <03068>. And they went

<01980> unto their own home <04725>.

21 And the LORD <03068> visited <06485> Hannah <02584>, so that

she conceived <02030>, and bare <03205> three <07969> sons

<01121> and two <08147> daughters <01121>. And the child <05288>

Samuel <08050> grew <01431> before <05973> the LORD <03068>.

22 Now Eli <05941> was very <03966> old <02204>, and heard

<08085> all <03605> that his sons <01121> did <06213> unto all

<03605> Israel <03478>; and how <0434> they lay <07901> with the

women <0802> that assembled <06633> [at] the door <06607> of the

tabernacle <0168> of the congregation <04150>.

23 And he said <0559> unto them, Why <04100> do <06213> ye such

<0428> things <01697>? for I hear <08085> of your evil <07451>

dealings <01697> by all <03605> this <0428> people <05971>.

24 Nay <0408>, my sons <01121>; for [it is] no <03808> good

<02896> report <08052> that I hear <08085>: ye make the LORD'S

<03068> people <05971> to transgress <05674>.

 25 If <0518> one man <0376> sin <02398> against another <0376>,

the judge <0430> shall judge <0430> him: but if <0518> a man

<0376> sin <02398> against the LORD <03068>, who <04310> shall

intreat <06419> for him? Notwithstanding they hearkened <08085>

not unto the voice <06963> of their father <01>, because <03588>

the LORD <03068> would <02654> slay <04191> them.

26 And the child <05288> Samuel <08050> grew <01432> on, and

was in favour <02896> both <01571> with the LORD <03068>, and

also <01571> with men <0582>.

 27. And there came <0935> a man <0376> of God <0430> unto Eli

<05941>, and said <0559> unto him, Thus <03541> saith <0559> the

LORD <03068>, Did I plainly <01540> appear <01540> unto the

house <01004> of thy father <01>, when they were in Egypt

<04714> in Pharaoh's <06547> house <01004>?

28 And did I choose <0977> him out of all <03605> the tribes

<07626> of Israel <03478> [to be] my priest <03548>, to offer

<05927> upon mine altar <04196>, to burn <06999> incense <07004>,

to wear <05375> an ephod <0646> before <06440> me? and did I

give <05414> unto the house <01004> of thy father <01> all

<03605> the offerings made by fire of the children <01121> of

Israel <03478>?

29 Wherefore <04100> kick <01163> ye at my sacrifice <02077>

and at mine offering <04503>, which <0834> I have commanded

<06680> [in my] habitation <04583>; and honourest <03513> thy

sons <01121> above me, to make yourselves fat <01254> with the

chiefest <07225> of all <03605> the offerings <04503> of Israel

<03478> my people <05971>?

30 Wherefore <03651> the LORD <03068> God <0430> of Israel

<03478> saith <05002>, I said <0559> indeed [that] thy house

<01004>, and the house <01004> of thy father <01>, should walk

<01980> before <06440> me for ever <05769>: but now <06258> the

LORD <03068> saith <05002>, Be it far <02486> from me; for them

that honour <03513> me I will honour <03513>, and they that

despise <0959> me shall be lightly <07043> esteemed <07043>.

 31 Behold <02009>, the days <03117> come <0935>, that I will

cut <01438> off thine arm <02220>, and the arm <02220> of thy

father's <01> house <01004>, that there shall not be an old

<02205> man in thine house <01004>.

32 And thou shalt see <05027> an enemy <06862> [in my]

habitation <04583>, in all <03605> [the wealth] which <0834>

[God] shall give <03190> Israel <03478>: and there shall not be

an old <02205> man in thine house <01004> for ever.

33 And the man <0376> of thine, [whom] I shall not cut <03772>

off from mine altar <04196>, [shall be] to consume <03615> thine

eyes <05869>, and to grieve <0109> thine heart <05315>: and all

<03605> the increase <04768> of thine house <01004> shall die

<04191> in the flower <0582> of their age <0582>.

34 And this <02088> [shall be] a sign <0226> unto thee, that

shall come <0935> upon thy two <08147> sons <01121>, on <0413>

Hophni <02652> and Phinehas <06372>; in one <0259> day <03117>

they shall die <04191> both <08147> of them.

 35 And I will raise <06965> me up a faithful <0539> priest

<03548>, [that] shall do <06213> according to [that] which

<0834> [is] in mine heart <03824> and in my mind <05315>: and I

will build <01129> him a sure <0539> house <01004>; and he shall

walk <01980> before <06440> mine anointed <04899> for ever.

36 And it shall come <01961> to pass, [that] every <03605> one

that is left <03498> in thine house <01004> shall come <0935>

[and] crouch <07812> to him for a piece <095> of silver <03701>

and a morsel <03603> of bread <03899>, and shall say <0559>, Put

<05596> me, I pray <04994> thee, into <0413> one <0259> of the

priests <03548>' offices, that I may eat <0398> a piece <06595>

of bread <03899>.

1Samuel 3

 1. And the child <05288> Samuel <08050> ministered <08334> unto

the LORD <03068> before <06440> Eli <05941>. And the word

<01697> of the LORD <03068> was precious <03368> in those

<01992> days <03117>; [there was] no <0369> open <06555> vision

<02377>.

2 And it came <01961> to pass at that time <03117>, when Eli

<05941> [was] laid <07901> down <07901> in his place <04725>,

and his eyes <05869> began <02490> to wax dim <03544>, [that] he

could <03201> not see <07200>;

 3 And ere <02962> the lamp <05216> of God <0430> went <03518>

out in the temple <01964> of the LORD <03068>, where the ark

<0727> of God <0430> [was], and Samuel <08050> was laid <07901>

down <07901> [to sleep];

4 That the LORD <03068> called <07121> Samuel <08050>: and he

answered <0559>, Here <02009> [am] I.

5 And he ran <07323> unto Eli <05941>, and said <0559>, Here

<02005> [am] I; for thou calledst <07121> me. And he said <0559>,

 I called <07121> not; lie <07901> down <07901> again <07725>.

And he went <03212> and lay <07901> down <07901>.

 6 And the LORD <03068> called <07121> yet <05750> again <03254>,

Samuel <08050>. And Samuel <08050> arose <06965> and went

<03212> to Eli <05941>, and said <0559>, Here <02005> [am] I;

for thou didst call <07121> me. And he answered <0559>, I called

<07121> not, my son <01121>; lie <07901> down <07901> again

<07725>.

7 Now Samuel <08050> did not yet <02962> know <03045> the LORD

<03068>, neither was the word <01697> of the LORD <03068> yet

<02962> revealed <01540> unto him.

8 And the LORD <03068> called <07121> Samuel <08050> again

<03254> the third <07992> time. And he arose <06965> and went

<03212> to Eli <05941>, and said <0559>, Here <02005> [am] I;

for thou didst call <07121> me. And Eli <05941> perceived <0995>

that the LORD <03068> had called <07121> the child <05288>.

9 Therefore Eli <05941> said <0559> unto Samuel <08050>, Go

<03212>, lie <07901> down <07901>: and it shall be, if <0518> he

call <07121> thee, that thou shalt say <0559>, Speak <01696>,

LORD <03068>; for thy servant <05650> heareth <08085>. So Samuel

<08050> went <03212> and lay <07901> down <07901> in his place

<04725>.

10 And the LORD <03068> came <0935>, and stood <03320>, and

called <07121> as at other times <06471>, Samuel <08050>, Samuel

<08050>. Then Samuel <08050> answered <0559>, Speak <01696>; for

thy servant <05650> heareth <08085>.

 11. And the LORD <03068> said <0559> to Samuel <08050>, Behold

<02009>, I will do <06213> a thing <01697> in Israel <03478>, at

which <0834> both <08147> the ears <0241> of every <03605> one

that heareth <08085> it shall tingle <06750>.

 12 In that day <03117> I will perform <06965> against <0413>

Eli <05941> all <03605> [things] which <0834> I have spoken

<01696> concerning <0413> his house <01004>: when I begin

<02490>, I will also make an end <03615>.

13 For I have told <05046> him that I will judge <08199> his

house <01004> for ever <05769> for the iniquity <05771> which

<0834> he knoweth <03045>; because <03588> his sons <01121> made

themselves <01992> vile <07043>, and he restrained <03543> them

not.

14 And therefore I have sworn <07650> unto the house <01004> of

Eli <05941>, that the iniquity <05771> of Eli's <05941> house

<01004> shall not be purged <03722> with sacrifice <02077> nor

offering <04503> for ever <05769>.

15 And Samuel <08050> lay <07901> until <05704> the morning

<01242>, and opened <06605> the doors <01817> of the house

<01004> of the LORD <03068>. And Samuel <08050> feared <03372>

to shew <05046> Eli <05941> the vision <04758>.

16 Then Eli <05941> called <07121> Samuel <08050>, and said

<0559>, Samuel <08050>, my son <01121>. And he answered <0559>,

Here <02009> [am] I.

17 And he said <0559>, What <04100> [is] the thing <01697> that

[the LORD] hath said <01696> unto thee? I pray <04994> thee hide

<03582> [it] not from me: God <0430> do <06213> so <03541> to

thee, and more <03254> also <03541>, if <0518> thou hide <03582>

[any] thing <01697> from me of all <03605> the things that he

said <01696> unto thee.

18 And Samuel <08050> told <05046> him every <03605> whit

<01697>, and hid <03582> nothing <03808> from him. And he said

<0559>, It [is] the LORD <03068>: let him do <06213> what

seemeth <05869> him good <02896>.

 19. And Samuel <08050> grew <01431>, and the LORD <03068> was

with him, and did let none <03808> of his words <01697> fall

<05307> to the ground <0776>.

20 And all <03605> Israel <03478> from Dan <01835> even to

Beersheba <0884> knew <03045> that Samuel <08050> [was]

established <0539> [to be] a prophet <05030> of the LORD <03068>.

21 And the LORD <03068> appeared <07200> again <03254> in

Shiloh <07887>: for the LORD <03068> revealed <01540> himself to

Samuel <08050> in Shiloh <07887> by the word <01697> of the LORD

<03068>.

1Samuel 4

 1. And the word <01697> of Samuel <08050> came <01961> to all

<03605> Israel <03478>. Now Israel <03478> went <03318> out

against <07125> the Philistines <06430> to battle <04421>, and

pitched <02583> beside <05921> Ebenezer <072>: and the

Philistines <06430> pitched <02583> in Aphek <0663>.

2 And the Philistines <06430> put themselves in array <06186>

against <07125> Israel <03478>: and when they joined <05208>

battle <04421>, Israel <03478> was smitten <05062> before

<06440> the Philistines <06430>: and they slew <05221> of the

army <04634> in the field <07704> about four <0702> thousand

<0505> men <0376>.

3 And when the people <05971> were come <0935> into <0413> the

camp <04264>, the elders <02205> of Israel <03478> said <0559>,

Wherefore <04100> hath the LORD <03068> smitten <05062> us to

day <03117> before <06440> the Philistines <06430>? Let us fetch

<03947> the ark <0727> of the covenant <01285> of the LORD

<03068> out of Shiloh <07887> unto us, that, when it cometh

<0935> among <07130> us, it may save <03467> us out of the hand

<03709> of our enemies <0341>.

4 So the people <05971> sent <07971> to Shiloh <07887>, that

they might bring <05375> from thence <08033> the ark <0727> of

the covenant <01285> of the LORD <03068> of hosts <06635>, which

dwelleth <03427> [between] the cherubims <03742>: and the two

<08147> sons <01121> of Eli <05941>, Hophni <02652> and Phinehas

<06372>, [were] there <08033> with the ark <0727> of the

covenant <01285> of God <0430>.

5 And when the ark <0727> of the covenant <01285> of the LORD

<03068> came <0935> into <0413> the camp <04264>, all <03605>

Israel <03478> shouted <07321> with a great <01419> shout

<08643>, so that the earth <0776> rang <01949> again.

6 And when the Philistines <06430> heard <08085> the noise

<06963> of the shout <08643>, they said <0559>, What <04100>

[meaneth] the noise <06963> of this <02063> great <01419> shout

in the camp <04264> of the Hebrews <05680>? And they understood

<03045> that the ark <0727> of the LORD <03068> was come <0935>

into <0413> the camp <04264>.

7 And the Philistines <06430> were afraid <03372>, for they

said <0559>, God <0430> is come <0935> into <0413> the camp

<04264>. And they said <0559>, Woe <0188> unto us! for there

hath not been <01961> such <02063> a thing heretofore <0865>.

8 Woe <0188> unto us! who <04310> shall deliver <05337> us out

of the hand <03027> of these <0428> mighty <0117> Gods <0430>?

these <0428> [are] the Gods <0430> that smote <05221> the

Egyptians <04714> with all <03605> the plagues <04347> in the

wilderness <04057>.

9 Be strong <02388>, and quit <01961> yourselves like men

<0582>, O ye Philistines <06430>, that ye be not servants

<05647> unto the Hebrews <05680>, as they have been to you: quit

yourselves like men <0582>, and fight <03898>.

 10. And the Philistines <06430> fought <03898>, and Israel

<03478> was smitten <05062>, and they fled <05127> every man

<0376> into his tent <0168>: and there was a very <03966> great

<01419> slaughter <04347>; for there fell <05307> of Israel

<03478> thirty <07970> thousand <0505> footmen <07273>.

11 And the ark <0727> of God <0430> was taken <03947>; and the

two <08147> sons <01121> of Eli <05941>, Hophni <02652> and

Phinehas <06372>, were slain <04191>.

 12. And there ran <07323> a man <0376> of Benjamin <01144> out

of the army <04634>, and came <0935> to Shiloh <07887> the same

<01931> day <03117> with his clothes <04055> rent <07167>, and

with earth <0127> upon his head <07218>.

 13 And when he came <0935>, lo <02009>, Eli <05941> sat <03427>

upon a seat <03678> by the wayside watching <06822>: for his

heart <03820> trembled <02730> for the ark <0727> of God <0430>.

And when the man <0376> came <0935> into the city <05892>, and

told <05046> [it], all <03605> the city <05892> cried <02199>

out.

14 And when Eli <05941> heard <08085> the noise <06963> of the

crying <06818>, he said <0559>, What <04100> [meaneth] the noise

<06963> of this <02088> tumult <01995>? And the man <0376> came

<0935> in hastily <04116>, and told <05046> Eli <05941>.

15 Now Eli <05941> was ninety <08673> and eight <08083> years

<08141> old <01121>; and his eyes <05869> were dim <06965>, that

he could <03201> not see <07200>.

16 And the man <0376> said <0559> unto Eli <05941>, I [am] he

that came <0935> out of the army <04634>, and I fled <05127> to

day <03117> out of the army <04634>. And he said <0559>, What

<04100> is there done <01697>, my son <01121>?

17 And the messenger <01319> answered <06030> and said <0559>,

Israel <03478> is fled <05127> before <06440> the Philistines

<06430>, and there hath been <01961> also <01571> a great

<01419> slaughter <04046> among the people <05971>, and thy two

<08147> sons <01121> also <01571>, Hophni <02652> and Phinehas

<06372>, are dead <04191>, and the ark <0727> of God <0430> is

taken <03947>.

18 And it came <01961> to pass, when he made mention <02142> of

the ark <0727> of God <0430>, that he fell <05307> from off

<05921> the seat <03678> backward <0322> by the side <03027> of

the gate <08179>, and his neck <04665> brake <07665>, and he

died <04191>: for he was an old <02204> man <0376>, and heavy

<03513>. And he had judged <08199> Israel <03478> forty <0705>

years <08141>.

 19. And his daughter <03618> in law <03618>, Phinehas <06372>'

wife <0802>, was with child <02030>, [near] to be delivered

<03205>: and when she heard <08085> the tidings <08052> that the

ark <0727> of God <0430> was taken <03947>, and that her father

<02524> in law <02524> and her husband <0376> were dead <04191>,

she bowed <03766> herself and travailed <03205>; for her pains

<06735> came <02015> upon her.

20 And about the time <06256> of her death <04191> the women

that stood <05324> by her said <01696> unto her, Fear <03372>

not; for thou hast born <03205> a son <01121>. But she answered

<06030> not, neither <03808> did she regard <03820> [it].

21 And she named <07121> the child <05288> Ichabod <0350>,

saying <0559>, The glory <03519> is departed <01540> from Israel

<03478>: because <0413> the ark <0727> of God <0430> was taken

<03947>, and because <0413> of her father <02524> in law <02524>

and her husband <0376>.

22 And she said <0559>, The glory <03519> is departed <01540>

from Israel <03478>: for the ark <0727> of God <0430> is taken

<03947>.

1Samuel 5

 1. And the Philistines <06430> took <03947> the ark <0727> of

God <0430>, and brought <0935> it from Ebenezer <072> unto

Ashdod <0795>.

2 When the Philistines <06430> took <03947> the ark <0727> of

God <0430>, they brought <0935> it into the house <01004> of

Dagon <01712>, and set <03322> it by Dagon <01712>.

3 And when they of Ashdod <0795> arose <07925> early <07925> on

the morrow <04283>, behold <02009>, Dagon <01712> [was] fallen

<05307> upon his face <06440> to the earth <0776> before <06440>

the ark <0727> of the LORD <03068>. And they took <03947> Dagon

<01712>, and set <07725> him in his place <04725> again <07725>.

4 And when they arose <07925> early <07925> on the morrow

<04283> morning <01242>, behold <02009>, Dagon <01712> [was]

fallen <05307> upon his face <06440> to the ground <0776> before

<06440> the ark <0727> of the LORD <03068>; and the head <07218>

of Dagon <01712> and both <08147> the palms <03709> of his hands

<03027> [were] cut <03772> off upon the threshold <04670>; only

<07535> [the stump of] Dagon <01712> was left <07604> to him.

5 Therefore neither <03808> the priests <03548> of Dagon

<01712>, nor any <03605> that come <0935> into Dagon's <01712>

house <01004>, tread <01869> on <05921> the threshold <04670> of

Dagon <01712> in Ashdod <0795> unto this <02088> day <03117>.

 6. But the hand <03027> of the LORD <03068> was heavy <03513>

upon them of Ashdod <0795>, and he destroyed <08074> them, and

smote <05221> them with emerods <06076>, [even <0853>] Ashdod

<0795> and the coasts <01366> thereof.

7 And when the men <0582> of Ashdod <0795> saw <07200> that [it

was] so <03651>, they said <0559>, The ark <0727> of the God

<0430> of Israel <03478> shall not abide <03427> with us: for

his hand <03027> is sore <07185> upon us, and upon Dagon <01712>

our god <0430>.

8 They sent <07971> therefore and gathered <0622> all <03605>

the lords <05633> of the Philistines <06430> unto them, and said

<0559>, What <04100> shall we do <06213> with the ark <0727> of

the God <0430> of Israel <03478>? And they answered <0559>, Let

the ark <0727> of the God <0430> of Israel <03478> be carried

<05437> about <05437> unto Gath <01661>. And they carried

<05437> the ark <0727> of the God <0430> of Israel <03478> about

<05437> [thither].

9 And it was [so], that, after <0310> they had carried <05437>

it about <05437>, the hand <03027> of the LORD <03068> was

against the city <05892> with a very <03966> great <01419>

destruction <04103>: and he smote <05221> the men <0582> of the

city <05892>, both small <06996> and great <01419>, and they had

emerods <06076> in their secret <08368> parts <02506>.

10 Therefore they sent <07971> the ark <0727> of God <0430> to

Ekron <06138>. And it came <01961> to pass, as the ark <0727> of

God <0430> came <0935> to Ekron <06138>, that the Ekronites

<06139> cried <02199> out, saying <0559>, They have brought

<05437> about <05437> the ark <0727> of the God <0430> of Israel

<03478> to us, to slay <04191> us and our people <05971>.

11 So they sent <07971> and gathered <0622> together all

<03605> the lords <05633> of the Philistines <06430>, and said

<0559>, Send <07971> away the ark <0727> of the God <0430> of

Israel <03478>, and let it go <07725> again <07725> to his own

place <04725>, that it slay <04191> us not, and our people

<05971>: for there was a deadly <04194> destruction <04103>

throughout all <03605> the city <05892>; the hand <03027> of God

<0430> was very <03966> heavy <03513> there.

12 And the men <0582> that died <04191> not were smitten

<05221> with the emerods <06076>: and the cry <07775> of the

city <05892> went <05927> up to heaven <08064>.

1Samuel 6

 1. And the ark <0727> of the LORD <03068> was in the country

<07704> of the Philistines <06430> seven <07651> months <02320>.

2 And the Philistines <06430> called <07121> for the priests

<03548> and the diviners <07080>, saying <0559>, What <04100>

shall we do <06213> to the ark <0727> of the LORD <03068>? tell

<03045> us wherewith <04100> we shall send <07971> it to his

place <04725>.

3 And they said <0559>, If <0518> ye send <07971> away the ark

<0727> of the God <0430> of Israel <03478>, send <07971> it not

empty <07387>; but in any wise return <07725> him a trespass

<0817> offering: then <0227> ye shall be healed <07495>, and it

shall be known <03045> to you why <04100> his hand <03027> is

not removed <05493> from you.

4 Then said <0559> they, What <04100> [shall be] the trespass

<0817> offering which <0834> we shall return <07725> to him?

They answered <0559>, Five <02568> golden <02091> emerods

<06076>, and five <02568> golden <02091> mice <05909>,

[according to] the number <04557> of the lords <05633> of the

Philistines <06430>: for one <0259> plague <04046> [was] on you

all <03605>, and on your lords <05633>.

5 Wherefore ye shall make <06213> images <06754> of your

emerods <06076>, and images <06754> of your mice <05909> that

mar <07843> the land <0776>; and ye shall give <05414> glory

<03519> unto the God <0430> of Israel <03478>: peradventure

<0194> he will lighten <07043> his hand <03027> from off <05921>

you, and from off <05921> your gods <0430>, and from off <05921>

your land <0776>.

6 Wherefore <04100> then do ye harden <05513> your hearts

<03824>, as the Egyptians <04714> and Pharaoh <06547> hardened

<03513> their hearts <03820>? when <0834> he had wrought <05953>

wonderfully <05953> among them, did they not let the people go

<07971>, and they departed <03212>?

 7 Now <06258> therefore make <06213> a new <02319> cart <05699>,

and take <03947> two <08147> milch <05763> kine <06510>, on

<05921> which <0834> there hath come <05927> no <03808> yoke

<05923>, and tie <0631> the kine <06510> to the cart <05699>,

and bring <07725> their calves <01121> home <01004> from them:

8 And take <03947> the ark <0727> of the LORD <03068>, and lay

<05414> it upon the cart <05699>; and put <07760> the jewels

<03627> of gold <02091>, which <0834> ye return <07725> him

[for] a trespass <0817> offering, in a coffer <0712> by the side

<06654> thereof; and send <07971> it away, that it may go

<01980>.

9 And see <07200>, if <0518> it goeth <05927> up by the way

<01870> of his own coast <01366> to Bethshemesh <01053>, [then]

he hath done <06213> us this <02063> great <01419> evil <07451>:

but if <0518> not, then we shall know <03045> that [it is] not

his hand <03027> [that] smote <05060> us: it [was] a chance

<04745> [that] happened <01961> to us.

 10. And the men <0582> did <06213> so <03651>; and took <03947>

two <08147> milch <05763> kine <06510>, and tied <0631> them to

the cart <05699>, and shut <03607> up their calves <01121> at

home <01004>:

11 And they laid <07760> the ark <0727> of the LORD <03068>

upon the cart <05699>, and the coffer <0712> with the mice

<05909> of gold <02091> and the images <06754> of their emerods

<02914>.

12 And the kine <06510> took the straight <03474> way <01870>

to the way <01870> of Bethshemesh <01053>, [and] went <01980>

along <01980> the highway <04546>, lowing <01600> as they went

<01980>, and turned <05493> not aside [to] the right <03225>

hand or [to] the left <08040>; and the lords <05633> of the

Philistines <06430> went <01980> after <0310> them unto the

border <01366> of Bethshemesh <01053>.

13 And [they of] Bethshemesh <01053> [were] reaping <07114>

their wheat <02406> harvest <07105> in the valley <06010>: and

they lifted <05375> up their eyes <05869>, and saw <07200> the

ark <0727>, and rejoiced <08055> to see <07200> [it].

14 And the cart <05699> came <0935> into <0413> the field

<07704> of Joshua <03091>, a Bethshemite <01030>, and stood

<05975> there <08033>, where <08033> [there was] a great <01419>

stone <068>: and they clave <01234> the wood <06086> of the cart

<05699>, and offered <05927> the kine <06510> a burnt <05930>

offering unto the LORD <03068>.

15 And the Levites <03881> took <03381> down <03381> the ark

<0727> of the LORD <03068>, and the coffer <0712> that [was]

with it, wherein <0834> the jewels <03627> of gold <02091>

[were], and put <07760> [them] on <0413> the great <01419> stone

<068>: and the men <0582> of Bethshemesh <01053> offered <05927>

burnt <05930> offerings and sacrificed <02076> sacrifices

<02077> the same <01931> day <03117> unto the LORD <03068>.

16 And when the five <02568> lords <05633> of the Philistines

<06430> had seen <07200> [it], they returned <07725> to Ekron

<06138> the same <01931> day <03117>.

17 And these <0428> [are] the golden <02091> emerods <02914>

which <0834> the Philistines <06430> returned <07725> [for] a

trespass <0817> offering unto the LORD <03068>; for Ashdod

<0795> one <0259>, for Gaza <05804> one <0259>, for Askelon

<0831> one <0259>, for Gath <01661> one <0259>, for Ekron

<06138> one <0259>;

18 And the golden <02091> mice <05909>, [according to] the

number <04557> of all <03605> the cities <05892> of the

Philistines <06430> [belonging] to the five <02568> lords

<05633>, [both <08147>] of fenced <04013> cities <05892>, and of

country <06521> villages <03724>, even unto the great <01419>

[stone of] Abel <059>, whereon they set <03240> down the ark

<0727> of the LORD <03068>: [which stone remaineth] unto this

<02088> day <03117> in the field <07704> of Joshua <03091>, the

Bethshemite <01030>.

 19. And he smote <05221> the men <0376> of Bethshemesh <01053>,

because <03588> they had looked <07200> into the ark <0727> of

the LORD <03068>, even he smote <05221> of the people <05971>

fifty <02572> thousand <0505> and threescore <07657> and ten men

<0376>: and the people <05971> lamented <056>, because <03588>

the LORD <03068> had smitten <05221> [many] of the people

<05971> with a great <01419> slaughter <04347>.

20 And the men <0582> of Bethshemesh <01053> said <0559>, Who

<04310> is able <03201> to stand <05975> before <06440> this

<02088> holy <06918> LORD <03068> God <0430>? and to whom

<04310> shall he go <05927> up from us?

21 And they sent <07971> messengers <04397> to the inhabitants

<03427> of Kirjathjearim <07157>, saying <0559>, The Philistines

<06430> have brought <07725> again <07725> the ark <0727> of the

LORD <03068>; come <03381> ye down <03381>, [and] fetch <05927>

it up to you.

1Samuel 7

 1. And the men <0582> of Kirjathjearim <07157> came <0935>, and

fetched up the ark <0727> of the LORD <03068>, and brought

<0935> it into <0413> the house <01004> of Abinadab <041> in the

hill <01389>, and sanctified <06942> Eleazar <0499> his son

<01121> to keep <08104> the ark <0727> of the LORD <03068>.

2 And it came <01961> to pass, while <03117> the ark <0727>

abode <03427> in Kirjathjearim <07157>, that the time <03117>

was long <07235>; for it was twenty <06242> years <08141>: and

all <03605> the house <01004> of Israel <03478> lamented <05091>

after <0310> the LORD <03068>.

 3. And Samuel <08050> spake <0559> unto all <03605> the house

<01004> of Israel <03478>, saying <0559>, If <0518> ye do return

<07725> unto the LORD <03068> with all <03605> your hearts

<03824>, [then] put <05493> away <05493> the strange <05236>

gods <0430> and Ashtaroth <06252> from among <08432> you, and

prepare <03559> your hearts <03824> unto the LORD <03068>, and

serve <05647> him only <0905>: and he will deliver <05337> you

out of the hand <03027> of the Philistines <06430>.

4 Then the children <01121> of Israel <03478> did put <05493>

away <05493> Baalim <01168> and Ashtaroth <06252>, and served

<05647> the LORD <03068> only <0905>.

 5 And Samuel <08050> said <0559>, Gather <06908> all <03605>

Israel <03478> to Mizpeh <04708>, and I will pray <06419> for

you unto the LORD <03068>.

6 And they gathered <06908> together to Mizpeh <04709>, and

drew <07579> water <04325>, and poured <08210> [it] out before

<06440> the LORD <03068>, and fasted <06684> on that day <03117>,

and said <0559> there, We have sinned <02398> against the LORD

<03068>. And Samuel <08050> judged <08199> the children <01121>

of Israel <03478> in Mizpeh <04708>.

 7. And when the Philistines <06430> heard <08085> that the

children <01121> of Israel <03478> were gathered <06908>

together to Mizpeh <04708>, the lords <05633> of the Philistines

<06430> went <05927> up against <0413> Israel <03478>. And when

the children <01121> of Israel <03478> heard <08085> [it], they

were afraid <03372> of the Philistines <06430>.

8 And the children <01121> of Israel <03478> said <0559> to

Samuel <08050>, Cease <02790> not to cry <02199> unto the LORD

<03068> our God <0430> for us, that he will save <03467> us out

of the hand <03027> of the Philistines <06430>.

 9 And Samuel <08050> took <03947> a sucking <02461> lamb

<02924>, and offered <05927> [it for] a burnt <05930> offering

wholly <03632> unto the LORD <03068>: and Samuel <08050> cried

<02199> unto the LORD <03068> for Israel <03478>; and the LORD

<03068> heard <06030> him.

10 And as Samuel <08050> was offering <05927> up the burnt

<05930> offering, the Philistines <06430> drew near <05066> to

battle <04421> against Israel <03478>: but the LORD <03068>

thundered <07481> with a great <01419> thunder <06963> on that

day <03117> upon the Philistines <06430>, and discomfited

<01949> them; and they were smitten <05062> before <06440>

Israel <03478>.

11 And the men <0582> of Israel <03478> went <03318> out of

Mizpeh <04709>, and pursued <07291> the Philistines <06430>, and

smote <05221> them, until <05704> [they came] under <08478>

Bethcar <01033>.

 12 Then Samuel <08050> took <03947> a stone <068>, and set

<07760> [it] between <0996> Mizpeh <04709> and Shen <08129>, and

called <07121> the name <08034> of it Ebenezer <072>, saying

<0559>, Hitherto hath the LORD <03068> helped <05826> us.

 13. So the Philistines <06430> were subdued <03665>, and they

came <0935> no <03808> more into the coast <01366> of Israel

<03478>: and the hand <03027> of the LORD <03068> was against

the Philistines <06430> all <03605> the days <03117> of Samuel

<08050>.

14 And the cities <05892> which <0834> the Philistines <06430>

had taken <03947> from Israel <03478> were restored <07725> to

Israel <03478>, from Ekron <06138> even unto Gath <01661>; and

the coasts <01366> thereof did Israel <03478> deliver <05337>

out of the hands <03027> of the Philistines <06430>. And there

was peace <07965> between <0996> Israel <03478> and the Amorites

<0567>.

 15 And Samuel <08050> judged <08199> Israel <03478> all <03605>

the days <03117> of his life <02416>.

16 And he went <01980> from year <08141> to year <08141> in

circuit <05437> to Bethel <01008>, and Gilgal, and Mizpeh

<04709>, and judged <08199> Israel <03478> in all <03605> those

<0428> places <04725>.

17 And his return <08666> [was] to Ramah <07414>; for there

<08033> [was] his house <01004>; and there <08033> he judged

<08199> Israel <03478>; and there <08033> he built <01129> an

altar <04196> unto the LORD <03068>.

1Samuel 8

 1. And it came <01961> to pass, when <0834> Samuel <08050> was

old <02204>, that he made <07760> his sons <01121> judges

<08199> over Israel <03478>.

2 Now the name <08034> of his firstborn <01060> was Joel

<03100>; and the name <08034> of his second <04932>, Abiah <029>:

[they were] judges <08199> in Beersheba <0884>.

3 And his sons <01121> walked <01980> not in his ways <01870>,

but turned <05186> aside <05186> after <0310> lucre <01215>, and

took <03947> bribes <07810>, and perverted <05186> judgment

<04941>.

 4. Then all <03605> the elders <02205> of Israel <03478>

gathered <06908> themselves together, and came <0935> to Samuel

<08050> unto Ramah <07414>,

5 And said <0559> unto him, Behold <02009>, thou art old

<02204>, and thy sons <01121> walk <01980> not in thy ways

<01870>: now <06258> make <07760> us a king <04428> to judge

<08199> us like all <03605> the nations <01471>.

6 But the thing <01697> displeased Samuel <08050>, when <0834>

they said <0559>, Give <05414> us a king <04428> to judge

<08199> us. And Samuel <08050> prayed <06419> unto the LORD

<03068>.

7 And the LORD <03068> said <0559> unto Samuel <08050>, Hearken

<08085> unto the voice <06963> of the people <05971> in all

<03605> that they say <0559> unto thee: for they have not

rejected <03988> thee, but they have rejected <03988> me, that I

should not reign <04427> over <05921> them.

8 According to all <03605> the works <04639> which <0834> they

have done <06213> since the day <03117> that I brought <05927>

them up out of Egypt <04714> even unto this <02088> day <03117>,

wherewith they have forsaken <05800> me, and served <05647>

other <0312> gods <0430>, so <03651> do <06213> they also

<01571> unto thee.

9 Now <06258> therefore hearken <08085> unto their voice

<06963>: howbeit <0389> yet <03588> protest <05749> solemnly

<05749> unto them, and shew <05046> them the manner <04941> of

the king <04428> that shall reign <04427> over <05921> them.

 10 And Samuel <08050> told <0559> all <03605> the words <01697>

of the LORD <03068> unto the people <05971> that asked <07592>

of him a king <04428>.

11 And he said <0559>, This <02088> will be the manner <04941>

of the king <04428> that shall reign <04427> over you: He will

take <03947> your sons <01121>, and appoint <07760> [them] for

himself, for his chariots <04818>, and [to be] his horsemen

<06571>; and [some] shall run <07323> before <06440> his

chariots <04818>.

12 And he will appoint <07760> him captains <08269> over

thousands <0505>, and captains <08269> over fifties <02572>; and

[will set them] to ear <02790> his ground <02758>, and to reap

<07114> his harvest <07105>, and to make <06213> his instruments

<03627> of war <04421>, and instruments <03627> of his chariots

<07393>.

13 And he will take <03947> your daughters <01121> [to be]

confectionaries <07543>, and [to be] cooks <02876>, and [to be]

bakers <0644>.

14 And he will take <03947> your fields <07704>, and your

vineyards <03754>, and your oliveyards <02132>, [even] the best

<02896> [of them], and give <05414> [them] to his servants

<05650>.

15 And he will take the tenth <06237> of your seed <02233>, and

of your vineyards <03754>, and give <05414> to his officers

<05631>, and to his servants <05650>.

16 And he will take <03947> your menservants <05650>, and your

maidservants <08198>, and your goodliest <02896> young <0970>

men, and your asses <02543>, and put <06213> [them] to his work

<04399>.

17 He will take the tenth <06237> of your sheep <06629>: and ye

shall be his servants <05650>.

18 And ye shall cry <02199> out in that day <03117> because

<06440> of your king <04428> which <0834> ye shall have chosen

<0977> you; and the LORD <03068> will not hear <06030> you in

that day <03117>.

19 Nevertheless the people <05971> refused <03985> to obey

<08085> the voice <06963> of Samuel <08050>; and they said

<0559>, Nay <03808>; but we will have <01961> a king <04428>

over <05921> us;

20 That we also <01571> may be like all <03605> the nations

<01471>; and that our king <04428> may judge <08199> us, and go

<03318> out before <06440> us, and fight <03898> our battles

<04421>.

21 And Samuel <08050> heard <08085> all <03605> the words

<01697> of the people <05971>, and he rehearsed <01696> them in

the ears <0241> of the LORD <03068>.

22 And the LORD <03068> said <0559> to Samuel <08050>, Hearken

<08085> unto their voice <06963>, and make them a king <04428>.

And Samuel <08050> said <0559> unto the men <0582> of Israel

<03478>, Go <03212> ye every man <0376> unto his city <05892>.

1Samuel 9

 1. Now there was a man <0376> of Benjamin <01144>, whose name

<08034> [was] Kish <07027>, the son <01121> of Abiel <022>, the

son <01121> of Zeror, the son <01121> of Bechorath <01064>, the

son <01121> of Aphiah <0647>, a Benjamite <01145>, a mighty

<01368> man <0376> of power <02428>.

 2 And he had <01961> a son <01121>, whose name <08034> [was]

Saul <07586>, a choice <0970> young <0970> man, and a goodly

<02896>: and [there was] not among the children <01121> of

Israel <03478> a goodlier <02896> person <0376> than he: from

his shoulders <07926> and upward <04605> [he was] higher <01364>

than any <03605> of the people <05971>.

 3. And the asses <0860> of Kish <07027> Saul's <07586> father

<01> were lost <06>. And Kish <07027> said <0559> to Saul

<07586> his son <01121>, Take <03947> now <04994> one <0259> of

the servants <05650> with thee, and arise <06965>, go <03212>

seek <01245> the asses <0860>.

4 And he passed <05674> through mount <02022> Ephraim <0669>,

and passed <05674> through the land <0776> of Shalisha <08031>,

but they found <04672> [them] not: then they passed <05674>

through the land <0776> of Shalim <08171>, and [there they were]

not: and he passed <05674> through the land <0776> of the

Benjamites <01145>, but they found <04672> [them] not.

5 [And] when they were come <0935> to the land <0776> of Zuph

<06689>, Saul <07586> said <0559> to his servant <05288> that

[was] with him, Come <03212>, and let us return <07725>; lest

<06435> my father <01> leave <02308> [caring] for the asses

<0860>, and take thought <01672> for us.

6 And he said <0559> unto him, Behold <02009> now <04994>,

[there is] in this <02063> city <05892> a man <0376> of God

<0430>, and [he is] an honourable <03513> man <0376>; all

<03605> that he saith <01696> cometh <0935> surely to pass: now

<04994> let us go <03212> thither; peradventure <0194> he can

shew <05046> us our way <01870> that we should go <01980>.

7 Then said <0559> Saul <07586> to his servant <05288>, But,

behold <02009>, [if] we go <03212>, what <04100> shall we bring

<0935> the man <0376>? for the bread <03899> is spent <0235> in

our vessels <03627>, and [there is] not a present <08670> to

bring <0935> to the man <0376> of God <0430>: what <04100> have

we?

8 And the servant <05288> answered <06030> Saul <07586> again

<03254>, and said <0559>, Behold <02009>, I have <04672> here at

hand <03027> the fourth <07253> part of a shekel <08255> of

silver <03701>: [that] will I give <05414> to the man <0376> of

God <0430>, to tell <05046> us our way <01870>.

 9 (Beforetime in Israel <03478>, when a man <0376> went <03212>

to enquire <01875> of God <0430>, thus <03541> he spake <0559>,

Come <03212>, and let us go <03212> to the seer <07200>: for [he

that is] now <03117> [called] a Prophet <05030> was beforetime

<06440> called <07121> a Seer <07200>.)

10 Then said <01697> Saul <07586> to his servant <05288>, Well

<02896> said <0559>; come <03212>, let us go <03212>. So they

went <03212> unto the city <05892> where the man <0376> of God

<0430> [was].

 11. [And] as they went <05927> up the hill <04608> to the city

<05892>, they found <04672> young <05291> maidens <05291> going

<03318> out to draw <07579> water <04325>, and said <0559> unto

them, Is the seer <07200> here <02088>?

 12 And they answered <06030> them, and said <0559>, He is;

behold <02009>, [he is] before <06440> you: make haste <04116>

now <06258>, for he came <0935> to day <03117> to the city

<05892>; for [there is] a sacrifice <02077> of the people

<05971> to day <03117> in the high <01116> place:

13 As soon as ye be come <0935> into the city <05892>, ye shall

straightway <03651> find <04672> him, before <02962> he go

<05927> up to the high <01116> place to eat <0398>: for the

people <05971> will not eat <0398> until <05704> he come <0935>,

because <03588> he doth bless <01288> the sacrifice <02077>;

[and] afterwards they eat <0398> that be bidden <07121>. Now

<06258> therefore get <05927> you up; for about this time

<03117> ye shall find <04672> him.

14 And they went <05927> up into <08432> the city <05892>:

[and] when they were come <0935> into the city <05892>, behold

<02009>, Samuel <08050> came <03318> out against <07125> them,

for to go <05927> up to the high <01116> place. ==== 15 Now the

LORD <03068> had told <01540> Samuel <08050> in

ear <0241> a day <03117> before <06440> Saul <07586> came <0935>,

saying <0559>,

16 To morrow <04279> about this time <06256> I will send

<07971> thee a man <0376> out of the land <0776> of Benjamin

<01144>, and thou shalt anoint <04886> him [to be] captain

<05057> over <05921> my people <05971> Israel <03478>, that he

may save <03467> my people <05971> out of the hand <03027> of

the Philistines <06430>: for I have looked <07200> upon my

people <05971>, because <03588> their cry <06818> is come <0935>

unto me.

17 And when Samuel <08050> saw <07200> Saul <07586>, the LORD

<03068> said <06030> unto him, Behold <02009> the man <0376>

whom <0834> I spake <0559> to thee of! this <02088> same <02088>

shall reign <06113> over my people <05971>.

 18. Then Saul <07586> drew near <05066> to Samuel <08050> in

the gate <08179>, and said <0559>, Tell <05046> me, I pray

<04994> thee, where the seer's <07200> house <01004> [is].

19 And Samuel <08050> answered <06030> Saul <07586>, and said

<0559>, I [am] the seer <07200>: go <05927> up before <06440> me

unto the high <01116> place; for ye shall eat <0398> with me to

day <03117>, and to morrow <01242> I will let thee go <07971>,

and will tell <05046> thee all <03605> that [is] in thine heart

<03824>.

20 And as for thine asses <0860> that were lost <06> three

<07969> days <03117> ago <03117>, set <07760> not thy mind

<03820> on them; for they are found <04672>. And on whom <04310>

[is] all <03605> the desire <02532> of Israel <03478>? [Is it]

not on thee, and on all <03605> thy father's <01> house <01004>?

21 And Saul <07586> answered <06030> and said <0559>, [Am] not

I a Benjamite <01145>, of the smallest <06996> of the tribes

<07626> of Israel <03478>? and my family <04940> the least

<06810> of all <03605> the families <04940> of the tribe <07626>

of Benjamin <01144>? wherefore <04100> then speakest <01696>

thou so <01697> to me?

22 And Samuel <08050> took <03947> Saul <07586> and his servant

<05288>, and brought <0935> them into the parlour <03957>, and

made <05414> them sit <05414> in the chiefest <07218> place

<04725> among them that were bidden <07121>, which [were] about

thirty <07970> persons <0376>.

23 And Samuel <08050> said <0559> unto the cook <02876>, Bring

<05414> the portion <04490> which <0834> I gave <05414> thee, of

which <0834> I said <0559> unto thee, Set <07760> it by thee.

24 And the cook <02876> took <07311> up the shoulder <07785>,

and [that] which [was] upon it, and set <07760> [it] before

<06440> Saul <07586>. And [Samuel] said <0559>, Behold <02009>

that which is left <07604>! set <07760> [it] before <06440> thee,

[and] eat <0398>: for unto this time <04150> hath it been kept

<08104> for thee since I said <0559>, I have invited <07121> the

people <05971>. So Saul <07586> did eat <0398> with Samuel

<08050> that day <03117>.

25 And when they were come <03381> down <03381> from the high

<01116> place into the city <05892>, [Samuel] communed <01696>

with Saul <07586> upon the top <01406> of the house.

26 And they arose <07925> early <07925>: and it came <01961> to

pass about the spring <05927> of the day <07837>, that Samuel

<08050> called <07121> Saul <07586> to the top <01406> of the

house, saying <0559>, Up, that I may send <07971> thee away. And

Saul <07586> arose <06965>, and they went <03318> out both

<08147> of them, he and Samuel <08050>, abroad <02351>.

27 [And] as they were going <03381> down <03381> to the end

<07097> of the city <05892>, Samuel <08050> said <0559> to Saul

<07586>, Bid <0559> the servant <05288> pass <05674> on before

<06440> us, (and he passed <05674> on,) but stand <05975> thou

still a while <03117>, that I may shew <08085> thee the word

<01697> of God <0430>.

1Samuel 10

 1. Then Samuel <08050> took <03947> a vial <06378> of oil

<08081>, and poured <03332> [it] upon his head <07218>, and

kissed <05401> him, and said <0559>, [Is it] not because <03588>

the LORD <03068> hath anointed <04886> thee [to be] captain

<05057> over <05921> his inheritance <05159>?

2 When thou art departed <03212> from me to day <03117>, then

thou shalt find <04672> two <08147> men <0582> by Rachel's

<07354> sepulchre <06900> in the border <01366> of Benjamin

<01144> at Zelzah; and they will say <0559> unto thee, The asses

<0860> which <0834> thou wentest <01980> to seek <01245> are

found <04672>: and, lo <02009>, thy father <01> hath left

<05203> the care <01697> of the asses <0860>, and sorroweth

<01672> for you, saying <0559>, What <04100> shall I do <06213>

for my son <01121>?

3 Then shalt thou go <02498> on forward <01973> from thence

<08033>, and thou shalt come <0935> to the plain <0436> of Tabor

<08396>, and there shall meet <04672> thee three <07969> men

<0582> going <05927> up to God <0430> to Bethel <01008>, one

<0259> carrying <05375> three <07969> kids <01423>, and another

<0259> carrying <05375> three <07969> loaves <03603> of bread

<03899>, and another <0259> carrying <05375> a bottle <05035> of

wine <03196>:

4 And they will salute <07965> thee, and give <05414> thee two

<08147> [loaves] of bread <03899>; which thou shalt receive

<03947> of their hands <03027>.

5 After <0310> that thou shalt come <0935> to the hill <01389>

of God <0430>, where [is] the garrison <05333> of the

Philistines <06430>: and it shall come <01961> to pass, when

thou art come <0835> thither <08033> to the city <05892>, that

thou shalt meet <06293> a company <02256> of prophets <05030>

coming <03381> down <03381> from the high <01116> place with a

psaltery <05035>, and a tabret <08596>, and a pipe <02485>, and

a harp <03658>, before <06440> them; and they shall prophesy

<05012>:

6 And the Spirit <07307> of the LORD <03068> will come <06743>

upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy <05012> with them, and shalt

be turned <02015> into another <0312> man <0376>.

7 And let it be, when <03588> these <0428> signs <0226> are

come <0935> unto thee, [that] thou do <06213> as occasion

<04672> serve <05647> thee; for God <0430> [is] with thee.

8 And thou shalt go <03381> down <03381> before <06440> me to

Gilgal; and, behold <02009>, I will come <03381> down <03381>

unto thee, to offer <05927> burnt <05930> offerings, [and] to

sacrifice <02076> sacrifices <02077> of peace <08002> offerings:

seven <07651> days <03117> shalt thou tarry <03176>, till

<05704> I come <0935> to thee, and shew <03045> thee what thou

shalt do <06213>.

 9. And it was [so], that when he had turned <06437> his back

<07926> to go <03212> from Samuel <08050>, God <0430> gave him

another <0312> heart <03820>: and all <03605> those <0428> signs

<0226> came <0935> to pass that day <03117>.

10 And when they came <0935> thither <08033> to the hill

<01389>, behold <02009>, a company <02256> of prophets <05030>

met <07125> him; and the Spirit <07307> of God <0430> came

<06743> upon him, and he prophesied <05012> among <08432> them.

11 And it came <01961> to pass, when all <03605> that knew

<03045> him beforetime saw <07200> that, behold <02009>, he

prophesied <05012> among <05973> the prophets <05030>, then the

people <05971> said <0559> one <0376> to another <07453>, What

<04100> [is] this <02088> [that] is come <01961> unto the son

<01121> of Kish <07027>? [Is] Saul <07586> also <01571> among

the prophets <05030>?

12 And one <0376> of the same place answered <06030> and said

<0559>, But who <04310> [is] their father <01>? Therefore it

became <01961> a proverb <04912>, [Is] Saul <07586> also <01571>

among the prophets <05030>?

13 And when he had made an end <03615> of prophesying <05012>,

he came <0935> to the high <01116> place.

 14 And Saul's <07586> uncle <01730> said <0559> unto him and to

his servant <05288>, Whither <0575> went <01980> ye? And he said

<0559>, To seek <01245> the asses <0860>: and when we saw

<07200> that [they were] no <0369> where <0370>, we came <0935>

to Samuel <08050>.

 15 And Saul's <07586> uncle <01730> said <0559>, Tell <05046>

me, I pray <04994> thee, what <04100> Samuel <08050> said <0559>

unto you.

16 And Saul <07586> said <0559> unto his uncle <01730>, He told

<05046> us plainly <05046> that the asses <0860> were found

<04672>. But of the matter <01697> of the kingdom <04410>,

whereof <0834> Samuel <08050> spake <0559>, he told <05046> him

not.

 17. And Samuel <08050> called <06817> the people <05971>

together unto the LORD <03068> to Mizpeh <04709>;

18 And said <0559> unto the children <01121> of Israel <03478>,

Thus <03541> saith <0559> the LORD <03068> God <0430> of Israel

<03478>, I brought <05927> up Israel <03478> out of Egypt

<04714>, and delivered <05337> you out of the hand <03027> of

the Egyptians <04714>, and out of the hand <03027> of all

<03605> kingdoms <04467>, [and] of them that oppressed <03905>

you:

19 And ye have this day <03117> rejected <03988> your God

<0430>, who <0834> himself saved <03467> you out of all <03605>

your adversities <07451> and your tribulations <06869>; and ye

have said <0559> unto him, [Nay], but set <07760> a king <04428>

over <05921> us. Now <06258> therefore present <03320>

yourselves before <06440> the LORD <03068> by your tribes

<07626>, and by your thousands <0505>.

20 And when Samuel <08050> had caused all <03605> the tribes

<07626> of Israel <03478> to come <07126> near <07126>, the

tribe <07626> of Benjamin <01144> was taken <03920>.

21 When he had caused the tribe <07626> of Benjamin <01144> to

come <07126> near <07126> by their families <04940>, the family

<04940> of Matri <04309> was taken <03920>, and Saul <07586> the

son <01121> of Kish <07027> was taken <03920>: and when they

sought <01245> him, he could not be found <04672>.

22 Therefore they enquired <07592> of the LORD <03068> further

<05750>, if the man <0376> should yet <05750> come <0935>

thither <01988>. And the LORD <03068> answered <0559>, Behold

<02009>, he hath hid <02244> himself <01931> among <0413> the

stuff <03627>.

23 And they ran <07323> and fetched <03947> him thence <08033>:

and when he stood <03320> among <08432> the people <05971>, he

was higher <01361> than any <03605> of the people <05971> from

his shoulders <07926> and upward <04605>.

24 And Samuel <08050> said <0559> to all <03605> the people

<05971>, See <07200> ye him whom <0834> the LORD <03068> hath

chosen <0977>, that [there is] none <0369> like <03644> him

among all <03605> the people <05971>? And all <03605> the people

<05971> shouted <07321>, and said <0559>, God save <02421> the

king <04428>.

25 Then Samuel <08050> told <01696> the people <05971> the

manner <04941> of the kingdom <04410>, and wrote <03789> [it] in

a book <05612>, and laid <03241> [it] up before <06440> the LORD

<03068>. And Samuel <08050> sent <07971> all <03605> the people

<05971> away, every man <0376> to his house <01004>.

 26 And Saul <07586> also <01571> went <01980> home <01004> to

Gibeah <01390>; and there went <03212> with him a band <02428>

of men, whose <0834> hearts <03820> God <0430> had touched

<05060>.

27 But the children <01121> of Belial <01100> said <0559>, How

<04100> shall this <02088> man save <03467> us? And they

despised <0959> him, and brought <0935> him no <03808> presents

<04503>. But he held <02790> his peace <02790>.

1Samuel 11

 1. Then Nahash <05176> the Ammonite <05984> came <05927> up,

and encamped <02583> against <05921> Jabeshgilead: and all

<03605> the men <0582> of Jabesh <03003> said <0559> unto Nahash

<05176>, Make <03772> a covenant <01285> with us, and we will

serve <05647> thee.

2 And Nahash <05176> the Ammonite <05984> answered <0559> them,

On this <02063> [condition] will I make <03772> [a covenant]

with you, that I may thrust <05365> out all <03605> your right

<03225> eyes <05869>, and lay <07760> it [for] a reproach

<02781> upon all <03605> Israel <03478>.

3 And the elders <02205> of Jabesh <03003> said <0559> unto him,

Give us seven <07651> days <03117>' respite <07503>, that we

may send <07971> messengers <04397> unto all <03605> the coasts

<01366> of Israel <03478>: and then, if <0518> [there be] no

<0369> man to save <03467> us, we will come <03318> out to thee.

4 Then came <0935> the messengers <04397> to Gibeah <01390> of

Saul <07586>, and told <01696> the tidings <01697> in the ears

<0241> of the people <05971>: and all <03605> the people <05971>

lifted <05375> up their voices <06963>, and wept <01058>.

 5. And, behold <02009>, Saul <07586> came <0935> after <0310>

the herd <01241> out of the field <07704>; and Saul <07586> said

<0559>, What <04100> [aileth] the people <05971> that they weep

<01058>? And they told <05608> him the tidings <01697> of the

men <0582> of Jabesh <03003>.

6 And the Spirit <07307> of God <0430> came <06743> upon Saul

<07586> when he heard <08085> those <0428> tidings <01697>, and

his anger <0639> was kindled <02734> greatly <03966>.

7 And he took <03947> a yoke <06776> of oxen <01241>, and hewed

<05408> them in pieces, and sent <07971> [them] throughout all

<03605> the coasts <01366> of Israel <03478> by the hands

<03027> of messengers <04397>, saying <0559>, Whosoever <0834>

cometh <03318> not forth <03318> after <0310> Saul <07586> and

after <0310> Samuel <08050>, so <03541> shall it be done <06213>

unto his oxen <01241>. And the fear <06343> of the LORD <03068>

fell <05307> on <05921> the people <05971>, and they came

<03318> out with one <0259> consent <0376>.

8 And when he numbered <06485> them in Bezek <0966>, the

children <01121> of Israel <03478> were three <07969> hundred

<03967> thousand <0505>, and the men <0376> of Judah <03063>

thirty <07970> thousand <0505>.

9 And they said <0559> unto the messengers <04397> that came

<0935>, Thus <03541> shall ye say <0559> unto the men <0376> of

Jabeshgilead, To morrow <04279>, by [that time] the sun <08121>

be hot <02527>, ye shall have help <08668>. And the messengers

<04397> came <0935> and shewed <05046> [it] to the men <0582> of

Jabesh <03003>; and they were glad <08056>.

10 Therefore the men <0582> of Jabesh <03003> said <0559>, To

morrow <04279> we will come <03318> out unto you, and ye shall

do <06213> with us all <03605> that seemeth <05869> good <02896>

unto you.

11 And it was [so] on the morrow <04283>, that Saul <07586> put

<07760> the people <05971> in three <07969> companies <07218>;

and they came <0935> into the midst <08432> of the host <04264>

in the morning <01242> watch <0821>, and slew <05221> the

Ammonites <05984> until <05704> the heat <02527> of the day

<03117>: and it came <01961> to pass, that they which remained

<07604> were scattered <06327>, so that two <08147> of them were

not left <07604> together <03162>.

 12. And the people <05971> said <0559> unto Samuel <08050>, Who

<04310> [is] he that said <0559>, Shall Saul <07586> reign

<04427> over <05921> us? bring <05414> the men <0582>, that we

may put them to death <04191>.

 13 And Saul <07586> said <0559>, There shall not a man <0376>

be put to death <04191> this <02088> day <03117>: for to day

<03117> the LORD <03068> hath wrought <06213> salvation <08668>

in Israel <03478>.

14 Then said <0559> Samuel <08050> to the people <05971>, Come

<03212>, and let us go <03212> to Gilgal <01537>, and renew

<02318> the kingdom <04410> there <08033>.

15 And all <03605> the people <05971> went <03212> to Gilgal

<01537>; and there <08033> they made Saul <07586> king <04427>

before <06440> the LORD <03068> in Gilgal <01537>; and there

<08033> they sacrificed <02076> sacrifices <02077> of peace

<08002> offerings before <06440> the LORD <03068>; and there

<08033> Saul <07586> and all <03605> the men <0582> of Israel

<03478> rejoiced <08055> greatly <03966>.

1Samuel 12

 1. And Samuel <08050> said <0559> unto all <03605> Israel

<03478>, Behold <02009>, I have hearkened <08085> unto your

voice <06963> in all <03605> that ye said <0559> unto me, and

have made a king <04428> over <05921> you.

2 And now <06258>, behold <02009>, the king <04428> walketh

<01980> before <06440> you: and I am old <02204> and grayheaded;

and, behold <02009>, my sons <01121> [are] with you: and I have

walked <01980> before <06440> you from my childhood <05271> unto

this <02088> day <03117>.

3 Behold <02009>, here I [am]: witness <06030> against me

before <05048> the LORD <03068>, and before <05048> his anointed

<04899>: whose <04310> ox <07794> have I taken <03947>? or whose

<04310> ass <02543> have I taken <03947>? or whom <04310> have I

defrauded <06231>? whom have I oppressed <07533>? or of whose

<04310> hand <03027> have I received <03947> [any] bribe <03724>

to blind <05956> mine eyes <05869> therewith? and I will restore

<07725> it you.

4 And they said <0559>, Thou hast not defrauded <06231> us, nor

<03808> oppressed <07533> us, neither <03808> hast thou taken

<03947> ought <03972> of any man's <0376> hand <03027>.

5 And he said <0559> unto them, The LORD <03068> [is] witness

<05707> against you, and his anointed <04899> [is] witness

<05707> this <02088> day <03117>, that ye have not found <04672>

ought <03972> in my hand <03027>. And they answered <0559>, [He

is] witness <05707>.

 6. And Samuel <08050> said <0559> unto the people <05971>, [It

is] the LORD <03068> that advanced <06213> Moses <04872> and

Aaron <0175>, and that brought <05927> your fathers <01> up out

of the land <0776> of Egypt <04714>.

7 Now <06258> therefore stand <03320> still, that I may reason

<08199> with you before <06440> the LORD <03068> of all <03605>

the righteous <06666> acts of the LORD <03068>, which <0834> he

did <06213> to you and to your fathers <01>.

 8 When <0834> Jacob <03290> was come <0935> into Egypt <04714>,

and your fathers <01> cried <02199> unto the LORD <03068>, then

the LORD <03068> sent <07971> Moses <04872> and Aaron <0175>,

which brought <03318> forth <03318> your fathers <01> out of

Egypt <04714>, and made them dwell <03427> in this place <04725>.

9 And when they forgat <07911> the LORD <03068> their God

<0430>, he sold <04376> them into the hand <03027> of Sisera

<05516>, captain <08269> of the host <06635> of Hazor <02674>,

and into the hand <03027> of the Philistines <06430>, and into

the hand <03027> of the king <04428> of Moab <04124>, and they

fought <03898> against them.

10 And they cried <02199> unto the LORD <03068>, and said

<0559>, We have sinned <02398>, because <03588> we have forsaken

<05800> the LORD <03068>, and have served <05647> Baalim <01168>

and Ashtaroth <06252>: but now <06258> deliver <05337> us out of

the hand <03027> of our enemies <0341>, and we will serve

<05647> thee.

11 And the LORD <03068> sent <07971> Jerubbaal <03378>, and

Bedan <0917>, and Jephthah <03316>, and Samuel <08050>, and

delivered <05337> you out of the hand <03027> of your enemies

<0341> on every <05437> side <05439>, and ye dwelled <03427>

safe <0983>.

12 And when ye saw <07200> that Nahash <05176> the king <04428>

of the children <01121> of Ammon <05983> came <0935> against

<05921> you, ye said <0559> unto me, Nay <03808>; but a king

<04428> shall reign <04427> over <05921> us: when the LORD

<03068> your God <0430> [was] your king <04428>.

13 Now <06258> therefore behold <02009> the king <04428> whom

<04310> ye have chosen <0977>, [and] whom <04310> ye have

desired <07592>! and, behold <02009>, the LORD <03068> hath set

<05414> a king <04428> over <05921> you.

14 If <0518> ye will fear <03372> the LORD <03068>, and serve

<05647> him, and obey <08085> his voice <06963>, and not rebel

<04784> against the commandment <06310> of the LORD <03068>,

then shall both <01571> ye and also <01571> the king <04428>

that reigneth <04427> over <05921> you continue <01961>

following <0310> the LORD <03068> your God <0430>:

15 But if <0518> ye will not obey <08085> the voice <06963> of

the LORD <03068>, but rebel <04784> against the commandment

<06310> of the LORD <03068>, then shall the hand <03027> of the

LORD <03068> be against you, as [it was] against your fathers

<01>.

 16. Now <06258> therefore <01571> stand <03320> and see <07200>

this <02088> great <01419> thing <01697>, which <0834> the LORD

<03068> will do <06213> before your eyes <05869>.

 17 [Is it] not wheat <02406> harvest <07105> to day <03117>? I

will call <07121> unto the LORD <03068>, and he shall send

<05414> thunder <06963> and rain <04306>; that ye may perceive

<03045> and see <07200> that your wickedness <07451> [is] great

<07227>, which <0834> ye have done <06213> in the sight <05869>

of the LORD <03068>, in asking <07592> you a king <04428>.

18 So Samuel <08050> called <07121> unto the LORD <03068>; and

the LORD <03068> sent <05414> thunder <06963> and rain <04306>

that day <03117>: and all <03605> the people <05971> greatly

<03966> feared <03372> the LORD <03068> and Samuel <08050>.

19 And all <03605> the people <05971> said <0559> unto Samuel

<08050>, Pray <06419> for thy servants <05650> unto the LORD

<03068> thy God <0430>, that we die <04191> not: for we have

added <03254> unto all <03605> our sins <02403> [this] evil

<07451>, to ask <07592> us a king <04428>.

20 And Samuel <08050> said <0559> unto the people <05971>, Fear

<03372> not: ye have done <06213> all <03605> this <02063>

wickedness <07451>: yet <0389> turn <05493> not aside from

following <0310> the LORD <03068>, but serve <05647> the LORD

<03068> with all <03605> your heart <03824>;

21 And turn <05493> ye not aside: for [then should ye go

<03212>] after <0310> vain <08414> [things], which <0834> cannot

<03308> profit <03276> nor <03808> deliver <05337>; for they

[are] vain <08414>.

22 For the LORD <03068> will not forsake <05203> his people

<05971> for his great <01419> name's <08034> sake <05668>:

because <03588> it hath pleased <02974> the LORD <03068> to make

<06213> you his people <05971>.

23 Moreover <01571> as for me, God forbid <02486> that I should

sin <02398> against the LORD <03068> in ceasing <02308> to pray

<06419> for you: but I will teach <03384> you the good <02896>

and the right <03477> way <01870>:

 24 Only <0389> fear <03372> the LORD <03068>, and serve <05647>

him in truth <0571> with all <03605> your heart <03824>: for

consider <07200> how <0834> great <01431> [things] he hath done

for you.

25 But if <0518> ye shall still do wickedly <07489>, ye shall

be consumed <05595>, both <01571> ye and your king <04428>.

1Samuel 13

 1. Saul <07586> reigned <04427> one year <08141>; and when he

had reigned <04427> two <08147> years <08141> over <05921>

Israel <03478>,

 2 Saul <07586> chose <0977> him three <07969> thousand <0505>

[men] of Israel <03478>; [whereof] two thousand <0505> were with

Saul <07586> in Michmash <04363> and in mount <02022> Bethel

<01008>, and a thousand <0505> were with Jonathan <03129> in

Gibeah <01390> of Benjamin <01144>: and the rest <03499> of the

people <05971> he sent <07971> every man <0376> to his tent

<0168>.

3 And Jonathan <03129> smote <05221> the garrison <05333> of

the Philistines <06430> that [was] in Geba <01387>, and the

Philistines <06430> heard <08085> [of it]. And Saul <07586> blew

<08628> the trumpet <07782> throughout all <03605> the land

<0776>, saying <0559>, Let the Hebrews <05680> hear <08085>.

 4 And all <03605> Israel <03478> heard <08085> say <0559>

[that] Saul <07586> had smitten <05221> a garrison <05333> of

the Philistines <06430>, and [that] Israel <03478> also <01571>

was had in abomination <0887> with the Philistines <06430>. And

the people <05971> were called <06817> together after <0310>

Saul <07586> to Gilgal <01537>.

5 And the Philistines <06430> gathered <0622> themselves

together to fight <03898> with Israel <03478>, thirty <07970>

thousand <0505> chariots <07393>, and six <08337> thousand

<0505> horsemen <06571>, and people <05971> as the sand <02344>

which <0834> [is] on <05921> the sea <03220> shore <08193> in

multitude <07230>: and they came <05927> up, and pitched <02583>

in Michmash <04363>, eastward <06926> from Bethaven <01007>.

6 When the men <0376> of Israel <03478> saw <07200> that they

were in a strait <06887>, (for the people <05971> were

distressed <05065>,) then the people <05971> did hide <02244>

themselves in caves <04631>, and in thickets <02337>, and in

rocks <05553>, and in high <06877> places, and in pits <0953>.

7 And [some of] the Hebrews <05680> went <05674> over <05674>

Jordan <03383> to the land <0776> of Gad <01410> and Gilead

<01568>. As for Saul <07586>, he [was] yet <05750> in Gilgal

<01537>, and all <03605> the people <05971> followed <0310> him

trembling <02729>.

 8. And he tarried <03176> seven <07651> days <03117>, according

to the set <04150> time that Samuel <08050> [had appointed]: but

Samuel <08050> came <0935> not to Gilgal <01537>; and the people

<05971> were scattered <06327> from him.

 9 And Saul <07586> said <0559>, Bring <05066> hither <05066> a

burnt <05930> offering to me, and peace <08002> offerings. And

he offered <05927> the burnt <05930> offering.

10 And it came <01961> to pass, that as soon as he had made an

end <03615> of offering <05927> the burnt <05930> offering,

behold <02009>, Samuel <08050> came <0935>; and Saul <07586>

went <03318> out to meet <07125> him, that he might salute

<01288> him.

11 And Samuel <08050> said <0559>, What <04100> hast thou done

<06213>? And Saul <07586> said <0559>, Because <03588> I saw

<07200> that the people <05971> were scattered <05310> from me,

and [that] thou camest <0935> not within the days <03117>

appointed <04150>, and [that] the Philistines <06430> gathered

<0622> themselves together at Michmash <04363>;

12 Therefore said <0559> I, The Philistines <06430> will come

<03381> down <03381> now <06258> upon me to Gilgal <01537>, and

I have not made supplication <02420> unto the LORD <03068>: I

forced <0662> myself therefore, and offered <05927> a burnt

<05930> offering.

13 And Samuel <08050> said <0559> to Saul <07586>, Thou hast

done foolishly <05528>: thou hast not kept <08104> the

commandment <04687> of the LORD <03068> thy God <0430>, which

<0834> he commanded <06680> thee: for now <06258> would the LORD

<03068> have established <03559> thy kingdom <04467> upon Israel

<03478> for ever <05769>.

14 But now <06258> thy kingdom <04467> shall not continue

<06965>: the LORD <03068> hath sought <01245> him a man <0376>

after his own heart <03824>, and the LORD <03068> hath commanded

<06680> him [to be] captain <05057> over <05921> his people

<05971>, because <03588> thou hast not kept <08104> [that] which

<0834> the LORD <03068> commanded <06680> thee.

 15. And Samuel <08050> arose <06965>, and gat <05927> him up

from Gilgal <01537> unto Gibeah <01390> of Benjamin <01144>. And

Saul <07586> numbered <06485> the people <05971> [that were]

present <04672> with him, about six <08337> hundred <03967> men

<0376>.

16 And Saul <07586>, and Jonathan <03129> his son <01121>, and

the people <05971> [that were] present <04672> with them, abode

<03427> in Gibeah <01390> of Benjamin <01144>: but the

Philistines <06430> encamped <02583> in Michmash <04363>.

17 And the spoilers <07843> came <03318> out of the camp

<04264> of the Philistines <06430> in three <07969> companies

<07218>: one <0259> company <07218> turned <06437> unto the way

<01870> [that leadeth to] Ophrah <06084>, unto the land <0776>

of Shual <07777>:

18 And another <0259> company <07218> turned <06437> the way

<01870> [to] Bethhoron <01032>: and another <0259> company

<07218> turned <06437> [to] the way <01870> of the border

<01366> that looketh <08259> to the valley <01516> of Zeboim

<06650> toward the wilderness <04057>.

19 Now there was no <03808> smith <02796> found <04672>

throughout all <03605> the land <0776> of Israel <03478>: for

the Philistines <06430> said <0559>, Lest <06435> the Hebrews

<05680> make <06213> [them] swords <02719> or <0176> spears

<02595>:

20 But all <03605> the Israelites <03478> went <03381> down

<03381> to the Philistines <06430>, to sharpen <03913> every man

<0376> his share <04282>, and his coulter <0855>, and his axe

<07134>, and his mattock <04281>.

21 Yet they had a file <06477> for the mattocks <04281>, and

for the coulters <0855>, and for the forks, and for the axes

<07134>, and to sharpen <05324> the goads <01861>.

22 So it came <01961> to pass in the day <03117> of battle

<04421>, that there was neither <03808> sword <02719> nor spear

<02595> found <04672> in the hand <03027> of any <03605> of the

people <05971> that [were] with Saul <07586> and Jonathan

<03129>: but with Saul <07586> and with Jonathan <03129> his son

<01121> was there found <04672>.

23 And the garrison <04673> of the Philistines <06430> went

<03318> out to the passage <04569> of Michmash <04363>.

1Samuel 14

 1. Now it came <01961> to pass upon a day <03117>, that

Jonathan <03129> the son <01121> of Saul <07586> said <0559>

unto the young <05288> man that bare <05375> his armour <03627>,

Come <03212>, and let us go <05674> over <05674> to the

Philistines <06430>' garrison <04673>, that [is] on the other

<05676> side <05676>. But he told <05046> not his father <01>.

2 And Saul <07586> tarried <03427> in the uttermost <07097>

part of Gibeah <01390> under <08478> a pomegranate <07416> tree

which <0834> [is] in Migron <04051>: and the people <05971> that

[were] with him [were] about six <08337> hundred <03967> men

<0376>;

 3 And Ahiah <0281>, the son <01121> of Ahitub <0285>, Ichabod's

<0350> brother <0251>, the son <01121> of Phinehas <06372>, the

son <01121> of Eli <05941>, the LORD'S <03068> priest <03548> in

Shiloh <07887>, wearing <05375> an ephod <0646>. And the people

<05971> knew <03045> not that Jonathan <03129> was gone <01980>.

4 And between <0996> the passages <04569>, by which <0834>

Jonathan <03129> sought <01245> to go <05674> over <05674> unto

the Philistines <06430>' garrison <04673>, [there was] a sharp

<08127> rock <05553> on the one <02088> side <05676>, and a

sharp <08127> rock <05553> on the other <02088> side <05676>:

and the name <08034> of the one <0259> [was] Bozez <0949>, and

the name <08034> of the other <0259> Seneh <05573>.

5 The forefront <08127> of the one <0259> [was] situate <04690>

northward <06828> over <04136> against <04136> Michmash <04363>,

and the other <0259> southward <05045> over <04136> against

<04136> Gibeah <01390>.

6 And Jonathan <03083> said <0559> to the young <05288> man

that bare <05375> his armour <03627>, Come <03212>, and let us

go <05674> over <05674> unto the garrison <04673> of these

<0428> uncircumcised <06189>: it may be that the LORD <03068>

will work <06213> for us: for [there is] no <0369> restraint

<04622> to the LORD <03068> to save <03467> by many <07227> or

<0176> by few <04592>.

7 And his armourbearer <03627> said <0559> unto him, Do <06213>

all <03605> that [is] in thine heart <03824>: turn <05186> thee;

behold <02005>, I [am] with thee according to thy heart <03824>.

8 Then said <0559> Jonathan <03083>, Behold <02009>, we will

pass <05674> over <05674> unto [these] men <0582>, and we will

discover <01540> ourselves unto them.

 9 If <0518> they say <0559> thus <03541> unto us, Tarry <01826>

until <05704> we come <05060> to you; then we will stand <05975>

still in our place <08478>, and will not go <05927> up unto them.

 10 But if <0518> they say <0559> thus <03541>, Come <05927> up

unto us; then we will go <05927> up: for the LORD <03068> hath

delivered <05414> them into our hand <03027>: and this <02088>

[shall be] a sign <0226> unto us.

11 And both <08147> of them discovered <01540> themselves unto

the garrison <04673> of the Philistines <06430>: and the

Philistines <06430> said <0559>, Behold <02009>, the Hebrews

<05680> come <03318> forth <03318> out of the holes <02356>

where they had hid <02244> themselves.

12 And the men <0582> of the garrison <04675> answered <06030>

Jonathan <03129> and his armourbearer <03627>, and said <0559>,

Come <05927> up to us, and we will shew <03045> you a thing

<01697>. And Jonathan <03129> said <0559> unto his armourbearer

<03627>, Come <05927> up after <0310> me: for the LORD <03068>

hath delivered <05414> them into the hand <03027> of Israel

<03478>.

13 And Jonathan <03129> climbed <05927> up upon his hands

<03027> and upon his feet <07272>, and his armourbearer <03627>

after <0310> him: and they fell <05307> before <06440> Jonathan

<03129>; and his armourbearer <03627> slew <04191> after <0310>

him.

 14 And that first <07223> slaughter <04347>, which <0834>

Jonathan <03129> and his armourbearer <03627> made <05221>, was

about twenty <06242> men <0376>, within as it were an half

<02677> acre <04618> of land <07704>, [which] a yoke <06776> [of

oxen might plow].

15 And there was trembling <02731> in the host <04264>, in the

field <07704>, and among all <03605> the people <05971>: the

garrison <04673>, and the spoilers <07843>, they also <01571>

trembled <02729>, and the earth <0776> quaked <07264>: so it was

a very <0430> great <0430> trembling <02731>.

 16. And the watchmen <06822> of Saul <07586> in Gibeah <01390>

of Benjamin <01144> looked <07200>; and, behold <02009>, the

multitude <01995> melted <04127> away, and they went <03212> on

beating <01986> down [one another].

17 Then said <0559> Saul <07586> unto the people <05971> that

[were] with him, Number <06485> now <04994>, and see <07200> who

<04310> is gone <01980> from us. And when they had numbered

<06485>, behold <02009>, Jonathan <03129> and his armourbearer

<03627> [were] not [there].

18 And Saul <07586> said <0559> unto Ahiah <0281>, Bring

<05066> hither <05066> the ark <0727> of God <0430>. For the ark

<0727> of God <0430> was at that time <03117> with the children

<01121> of Israel <03478>.

19 And it came <01961> to pass, while <05704> Saul <07586>

talked <01696> unto the priest <03548>, that the noise <01995>

that [was] in the host <04264> of the Philistines <06430> went

<03212> on and increased <07227>: and Saul <07586> said <0559>

unto the priest <03548>, Withdraw <0622> thine hand <03027>.

20 And Saul <07586> and all <03605> the people <05971> that

[were] with him assembled <02199> themselves, and they came

<0935> to the battle <04421>: and, behold <02009>, every man's

<0376> sword <02719> was against his fellow <07453>, [and there

was] a very <03966> great <01419> discomfiture <04103>.

21 Moreover the Hebrews <05680> [that] were with the

Philistines <06430> before <0865> that time <08032>, which

<0834> went <05927> up with them into the camp <04264> [from the

country] round <05439> about, even they also <01571> [turned] to

be with the Israelites <03478> that [were] with Saul <07586> and

Jonathan <03129>.

22 Likewise <01571> all <03605> the men <0376> of Israel

<03478> which had hid <02244> themselves in mount <02022>

Ephraim <0669>, [when] they heard <08085> that the Philistines

<06430> fled <05127>, even they also <01571> followed <01692>

hard <01692> after <0310> them in the battle <04421>.

23 So the LORD <03068> saved <03467> Israel <03478> that day

<03117>: and the battle <04421> passed <05674> over <05674> unto

Bethaven <01007>.

 24. And the men <0376> of Israel <03478> were distressed

<05065> that day <03117>: for Saul <07586> had adjured <0422>

the people <05971>, saying <0559>, Cursed <0779> [be] the man

<0376> that eateth <0398> [any] food <03899> until <05704>

evening <06153>, that I may be avenged <05358> on mine enemies

<0341>. So none <03808> of the people <05971> tasted <02938>

[any <03605>] food <03899>.

25 And all <03605> [they of] the land <0776> came <0935> to a

wood <03293>; and there was honey <01706> upon the ground

<07704>.

26 And when the people <05971> were come <0935> into <0413> the

wood <03293>, behold <02009>, the honey <01706> dropped <01982>;

but no <0369> man put <05381> his hand <03027> to his mouth

<06310>: for the people <05971> feared <03372> the oath <07621>.

27 But Jonathan <03129> heard <08085> not when his father <01>

charged <07650> the people <05971> with the oath <07650>:

wherefore he put <07971> forth <07971> the end <07097> of the

rod <04294> that [was] in his hand <03027>, and dipped <02881>

it in an honeycomb, and put <07725> his hand <03027> to his

mouth <06310>; and his eyes <05869> were enlightened <0215>.

28 Then answered <06030> one of the people <05971>, and said

<0559>, Thy father <01> straitly charged <07650> the people

<05971> with an oath <07650>, saying <0559>, Cursed <0779> [be]

the man <0376> that eateth <0398> [any] food <03899> this day

<03117>. And the people <05971> were faint <05774>.

29 Then said <0559> Jonathan <03129>, My father <01> hath

troubled <05916> the land <0776>: see <07200>, I pray <04994>

you, how <03588> mine eyes <05869> have been enlightened <0215>,

because <03588> I tasted <02938> a little <04592> of this

<02088> honey <01706>.

 30 How <0637> much <0637> more <0637>, if <03863> haply <03863>

the people <05971> had eaten <0398> freely to day <03117> of the

spoil <07998> of their enemies <0341> which <0834> they found

<04672>? for had there not been now <06258> a much greater

<07235> slaughter <04347> among the Philistines <06430>?

31 And they smote <05221> the Philistines <06430> that day

<03117> from Michmash <04363> to Aijalon <0357>: and the people

<05971> were very <03966> faint <05774>.

32 And the people <05971> flew <06213> upon the spoil <07998>,

and took <03947> sheep <06629>, and oxen <01241>, and calves,

and slew <07819> [them] on the ground <0776>: and the people

<05971> did eat <0398> [them] with the blood <01818>.

33 Then they told <05046> Saul <07586>, saying <0559>, Behold

<02009>, the people <05971> sin <02398> against the LORD <03068>,

in that they eat <0398> with the blood <01818>. And he said

<0559>, Ye have transgressed <0898>: roll <01556> a great

<01419> stone <068> unto me this day <03117>.

 34 And Saul <07586> said <0559>, Disperse <06327> yourselves

among the people <05971>, and say <0559> unto them, Bring

<05066> me hither <05066> every man <0376> his ox <07794>, and

every man <0376> his sheep <07716>, and slay <07819> [them] here

<02088>, and eat <0398>; and sin <02398> not against the LORD

<03068> in eating <0398> with the blood <01818>. And all <03605>

the people <05971> brought <05066> every man <0376> his ox

<07794> with him that night <03915>, and slew <07819> [them]

there <08033>.

35 And Saul <07586> built <01129> an altar <04196> unto the

LORD <03068>: the same was the first <02490> altar <04196> that

he built <01129> unto the LORD <03068>.

 36. And Saul <07586> said <0559>, Let us go <03381> down

<03381> after <0310> the Philistines <06430> by night <03915>,

and spoil <0962> them until <05704> the morning <01242> light

<0216>, and let us not leave <07604> a man <0376> of them. And

they said <0559>, Do <06213> whatsoever <03605> seemeth <05869>

good <02896> unto thee. Then said <0559> the priest <03548>, Let

us draw near <07126> hither <01988> unto God <0430>.

37 And Saul <07586> asked <07592> counsel of God <0430>, Shall

I go <03381> down <03381> after <0310> the Philistines <06430>?

wilt thou deliver <05414> them into the hand <03027> of Israel

<03478>? But he answered <06030> him not that day <03117>.

38 And Saul <07586> said <0559>, Draw ye near <05066> hither

<01988>, all <03605> the chief <06438> of the people <05971>:

and know <03045> and see <07200> wherein <04100> this <02088>

sin <02403> hath been <01961> this <02088> day <03117>.

39 For, [as] the LORD <03068> liveth <02416>, which saveth

<03467> Israel <03478>, though it be in Jonathan <03129> my son

<01121>, he shall surely <03588> die <04191>. But [there was]

not a man among all <03605> the people <05971> [that] answered

<06030> him.

40 Then said <0559> he unto all <03605> Israel <03478>, Be ye

on one <0259> side <05676>, and I and Jonathan <03129> my son

<01121> will be on the other <0259> side <05676>. And the people

<05971> said <0559> unto Saul <07586>, Do <06213> what seemeth

<05869> good <02896> unto thee.

41 Therefore Saul <07586> said <0559> unto the LORD <03068> God

<0430> of Israel <03478>, Give <03051> a perfect <08549> [lot].

And Saul <07586> and Jonathan <03129> were taken <03920>: but

the people <05971> escaped <03318>.

42 And Saul <07586> said <0559>, Cast <05307> [lots] between

<0996> me and Jonathan <03129> my son <01121>. And Jonathan

<03129> was taken <03920>.

43 Then Saul <07586> said <0559> to Jonathan <03129>, Tell

<05046> me what <04100> thou hast done <06213>. And Jonathan

<03129> told <05046> him, and said <0559>, I did but taste

<02938> a little <04592> honey <01706> with the end <07097> of

the rod <04294> that [was] in mine hand <03027>, [and], lo

<02114>, I must die <04191>.

 44 And Saul <07586> answered <0559>, God <0430> do <06213> so

<03541> and more <03254> also <03541>: for thou shalt surely die

<04191>, Jonathan <03129>.

45 And the people <05971> said <0559> unto Saul <07586>, Shall

Jonathan <03129> die <04191>, who <0834> hath wrought <06213>

this <02088> great <01419> salvation <03444> in Israel <03478>?

God forbid <02486>: [as] the LORD <03068> liveth <02416>, there

shall not one hair <08185> of his head <07218> fall <05307> to

the ground <0776>; for he hath wrought <06213> with God <0430>

this <02088> day <03117>. So the people <05971> rescued <06299>

Jonathan <03129>, that he died <04191> not.

46 Then Saul <07586> went <05927> up from following <0310> the

Philistines <06430>: and the Philistines <06430> went <01980> to

their own place <04725>.

 47. So Saul <07586> took <03920> the kingdom <04410> over

<05921> Israel <03478>, and fought <03898> against all <03605>

his enemies <0341> on every <05437> side <05439>, against Moab

<04124>, and against the children <01121> of Ammon <05983>, and

against Edom <0123>, and against the kings <04428> of Zobah

<06678>, and against the Philistines <06430>: and whithersoever

he turned <06437> himself, he vexed <07561> [them].

48 And he gathered <06213> an host <02428>, and smote <05221>

the Amalekites <06003>, and delivered <05337> Israel <03478> out

of the hands <03027> of them that spoiled <08154> them.

49 Now the sons <01121> of Saul <07586> were Jonathan <03129>,

and Ishui <03440>, and Melchishua <04444>: and the names <08034>

of his two <08147> daughters <01121> [were these]; the name

<08034> of the firstborn <01067> Merab <04764>, and the name

<08034> of the younger <06996> Michal <04324>:

 50 And the name <08034> of Saul's <07586> wife <0802> [was]

Ahinoam <0293>, the daughter <01323> of Ahimaaz <0290>: and the

name <08034> of the captain <08269> of his host <06635> [was]

Abner <074>, the son <01121> of Ner <05369>, Saul's <07586>

uncle <01730>.

51 And Kish <07027> [was] the father <01> of Saul <07586>; and

Ner <05369> the father <01> of Abner <074> [was] the son <01121>

of Abiel <022>.

52 And there was sore <02389> war <04421> against <05921> the

Philistines <06430> all <03605> the days <03117> of Saul <07586>:

and when Saul <07586> saw <07200> any <03605> strong <01368>

man <0376>, or any <03605> valiant <02428> man <01121>, he took

<0622> him unto him.

1Samuel 15

 1. Samuel <08050> also said <0559> unto Saul <07586>, The LORD

<03068> sent <07971> me to anoint <04886> thee [to be] king

<04428> over <05921> his people <05971>, over Israel <03478>:

now <06258> therefore hearken <08085> thou unto the voice

<06963> of the words <01697> of the LORD <03068>.

 2 Thus <03541> saith <0559> the LORD <03068> of hosts <06635>,

I remember <06485> [that] which <0834> Amalek <06002> did

<06213> to Israel <03478>, how <0834> he laid <07760> [wait] for

him in the way <01870>, when he came <05927> up from Egypt

<04714>.

 3 Now <06258> go <03212> and smite <05221> Amalek <06002>, and

utterly destroy <02763> all <03605> that they have, and spare

<02550> them not; but slay <04191> both man <0376> and woman

<0802>, infant <05768> and suckling <03243>, ox <07794> and

sheep <07716>, camel <01581> and ass <02543>.

4 And Saul <07586> gathered <08085> the people <05971> together,

and numbered <06485> them in Telaim <02923>, two hundred

<03967> thousand <0505> footmen <07273>, and ten <06235>

thousand <0505> men <0376> of Judah <03063>.

 5 And Saul <07586> came <0935> to a city <05892> of Amalek

<06002>, and laid wait <0693> in the valley <05158>.

6 And Saul <07586> said <0559> unto the Kenites <07017>, Go

<03212>, depart <05493>, get <03381> you down <03381> from among

<08432> the Amalekites <06003>, lest <06435> I destroy <0622>

you with them: for ye shewed <06213> kindness <02617> to all

<03605> the children <01121> of Israel <03478>, when they came

<05927> up out of Egypt <04714>. So the Kenites <07017> departed

<05493> from among <08432> the Amalekites <06003>.

7 And Saul <07586> smote <05221> the Amalekites <06003> from

Havilah <02341> [until] thou comest <0935> to Shur <07793>, that

[is] over against <06440> Egypt <04714>.

8 And he took <08610> Agag <090> the king <04428> of the

Amalekites <06003> alive <02416>, and utterly destroyed <02763>

all <03605> the people <05971> with the edge <06310> of the

sword <02719>.

9 But Saul <07586> and the people <05971> spared <02550> Agag

<090>, and the best <04315> of the sheep <06629>, and of the

oxen <01241>, and of the fatlings <04932>, and the lambs <03733>,

and all <03605> [that was] good <02896>, and would <014> not

utterly destroy <02763> them: but every <03605> thing <04399>

[that was] vile <05240> and refuse <04549>, that they destroyed

<02763> utterly.

 10. Then came <01961> the word <01697> of the LORD <03068> unto

Samuel <08050>, saying <0559>,

11 It repenteth <05162> me that I have set <04427> up Saul

<07586> [to be] king <04428>: for he is turned <07725> back

<07725> from following <0310> me, and hath not performed <06965>

my commandments <01697>. And it grieved <02734> Samuel <08050>;

and he cried <02199> unto the LORD <03068> all <03605> night

<03915>.

12 And when Samuel <08050> rose <07925> early <07925> to meet

<07125> Saul <07586> in the morning <01242>, it was told <05046>

Samuel <08050>, saying <0559>, Saul <07586> came <0935> to

Carmel <03760>, and, behold <02009>, he set <05324> him up a

place <03027>, and is gone <05437> about <05437>, and passed

<05674> on, and gone <03381> down <03381> to Gilgal <01537>.

13 And Samuel <08050> came <0935> to Saul <07586>: and Saul

<07586> said <0559> unto him, Blessed <01288> [be] thou of the

LORD <03068>: I have performed <06965> the commandment <01697>

of the LORD <03068>.

14 And Samuel <08050> said <0559>, What <04100> [meaneth] then

this <02088> bleating <06963> of the sheep <06629> in mine ears

<0241>, and the lowing <06963> of the oxen <01241> which <0834>

I hear <08085>?

15 And Saul <07586> said <0559>, They have brought <0935> them

from the Amalekites <06003>: for the people <05971> spared

<02550> the best <04315> of the sheep <06629> and of the oxen

<01241>, to sacrifice <02076> unto the LORD <03068> thy God

<0430>; and the rest <03498> we have utterly destroyed <02763>.

16 Then Samuel <08050> said <0559> unto Saul <07586>, Stay

<07503>, and I will tell <05046> thee what the LORD <03068> hath

said <01696> to me this night <03915>. And he said <0559> unto

him, Say <01696> on.

17 And Samuel <08050> said <0559>, When <0518> thou [wast]

little <06996> in thine own sight <05869>, [wast] thou not

[made] the head <07218> of the tribes <07626> of Israel <03478>,

and the LORD <03068> anointed <04886> thee king <04428> over

<05921> Israel <03478>?

 18 And the LORD <03068> sent <07971> thee on a journey <01870>,

and said <0559>, Go <03212> and utterly destroy <02763> the

sinners <02400> the Amalekites <06003>, and fight <03898>

against them until <05704> they be consumed <03615>.

19 Wherefore <04100> then didst thou not obey <08085> the voice

<06963> of the LORD <03068>, but didst fly <05860> upon the

spoil <07998>, and didst <06213> evil <07451> in the sight

<05869> of the LORD <03068>?

 20 And Saul <07586> said <0559> unto Samuel <08050>, Yea <0834>,

I have obeyed <08085> the voice <06963> of the LORD <03068>,

and have gone <03212> the way <01870> which <0834> the LORD

<03068> sent <07971> me, and have brought <0935> Agag <090> the

king <04428> of Amalek <06002>, and have utterly destroyed

<02763> the Amalekites <06003>.

21 But the people <05971> took <03947> of the spoil <07998>,

sheep <06629> and oxen <01241>, the chief <07225> of the things

which should have been utterly destroyed <02764>, to sacrifice

<02076> unto the LORD <03068> thy God <0430> in Gilgal <01537>.

22 And Samuel <08050> said <0559>, Hath the LORD <03068> [as

great <01419>] delight <02656> in burnt <05930> offerings and

sacrifices <02077>, as in obeying <08085> the voice <06963> of

the LORD <03068>? Behold <02009>, to obey <08085> [is] better

<02896> than sacrifice <02077>, [and] to hearken <07181> than

the fat <02459> of rams <0352>.

23 For rebellion <04805> [is as] the sin <02403> of witchcraft

<07081>, and stubbornness <06484> [is as] iniquity <0205> and

idolatry <08655>. Because <03282> thou hast rejected <03988> the

word <01697> of the LORD <03068>, he hath also rejected <03988>

thee from [being] king <04428>.

 24. And Saul <07586> said <0559> unto Samuel <08050>, I have

sinned <02398>: for I have transgressed <05674> the commandment

<06310> of the LORD <03068>, and thy words <01697>: because

<03588> I feared <03372> the people <05971>, and obeyed <08085>

their voice <06963>.

 25 Now <06258> therefore, I pray <04994> thee, pardon <05375>

my sin <02403>, and turn <07725> again <07725> with me, that I

may worship <07812> the LORD <03068>.

 26 And Samuel <08050> said <0559> unto Saul <07586>, I will not

return <07725> with thee: for thou hast rejected <03988> the

word <01697> of the LORD <03068>, and the LORD <03068> hath

rejected <03988> thee from being king <04428> over <05921>

Israel <03478>.

27 And as Samuel <08050> turned <05437> about <05437> to go

<03212> away, he laid hold <02388> upon the skirt <03671> of his

mantle <04598>, and it rent <07167>.

28 And Samuel <08050> said <0559> unto him, The LORD <03068>

hath rent <07167> the kingdom <04468> of Israel <03478> from

thee this day <03117>, and hath given <05414> it to a neighbour

<07453> of thine, [that is] better <02896> than thou.

29 And also <01571> the Strength <05331> of Israel <03478> will

not lie <08266> nor <03808> repent <05162>: for he [is] not a

man <0120>, that he should repent <05162>.

30 Then he said <0559>, I have sinned <02398>: [yet] honour

<03513> me now <06258>, I pray <04994> thee, before <05048> the

elders <02205> of my people <05971>, and before <05048> Israel

<03478>, and turn <07725> again <07725> with me, that I may

worship <07812> the LORD <03068> thy God <0430>.

 31 So Samuel <08050> turned <07725> again <07725> after <0310>

Saul <07586>; and Saul <07586> worshipped <07812> the LORD

<03068>.

 32. Then said <0559> Samuel <08050>, Bring <05066> ye hither

<05066> to me Agag <090> the king <04428> of the Amalekites

<06003>. And Agag <090> came <01980> unto him delicately <04574>.

And Agag <090> said <0559>, Surely <0403> the bitterness

<04751> of death <04194> is past <05493>.

33 And Samuel <08050> said <0559>, As thy sword <02719> hath

made women <0802> childless <07921>, so <03651> shall thy mother

<0517> be childless <07921> among women <0802>. And Samuel

<08050> hewed <08158> Agag <090> in pieces before <06440> the

LORD <03068> in Gilgal <01537>.

34 Then Samuel <08050> went <03212> to Ramah <07414>; and Saul

<07586> went <05927> up to his house <01004> to Gibeah <01390>

of Saul <07586>.

35 And Samuel <08050> came no <03808> more <03254> to see

<07200> Saul <07586> until <05704> the day <03117> of his death

<04194>: nevertheless <03588> Samuel <08050> mourned <056> for

Saul <07586>: and the LORD <03068> repented <05162> that he had

<01961> made Saul <07586> king <04427> over <05921> Israel

<03478>.

1Samuel 16

 1. And the LORD <03068> said <0559> unto Samuel <08050>, How

<05704> long <05704> wilt thou mourn <056> for Saul <07586>,

seeing I have rejected <03988> him from reigning <04427> over

<05921> Israel <03478>? fill <04390> thine horn <07161> with oil

<08081>, and go <03212>, I will send <07971> thee to Jesse

<03448> the Bethlehemite <01022>: for I have provided <07200> me

a king <04428> among his sons <01121>.

 2 And Samuel <08050> said <0559>, How <0349> can I go <03212>?

if Saul <07586> hear <08085> [it], he will kill <02026> me. And

the LORD <03068> said <0559>, Take <03947> an heifer <05697>

with thee, and say <0559>, I am come <0935> to sacrifice <02076>

to the LORD <03068>.

3 And call <07121> Jesse <03448> to the sacrifice <02077>, and

I will shew <03045> thee what thou shalt do <06213>: and thou

shalt anoint <04886> unto me [him] whom <0834> I name <0559>

unto thee.

4 And Samuel <08050> did <06213> that which <0834> the LORD

<03068> spake <01696>, and came <0935> to Bethlehem <01035>. And

the elders <02205> of the town <07023> trembled <02729> at his

coming <07122>, and said <0559>, Comest <0935> thou peaceably

<07965>?

 5 And he said <0559>, Peaceably <07965>: I am come <0935> to

sacrifice <02076> unto the LORD <03068>: sanctify <06942>

yourselves, and come <0935> with me to the sacrifice <02077>.

And he sanctified <06942> Jesse <03448> and his sons <01121>,

and called <07121> them to the sacrifice <02077>.

 6. And it came <01961> to pass, when they were come <0935>,

that he looked <07200> on Eliab <0446>, and said <0559>, Surely

<0389> the LORD'S <03068> anointed <04899> [is] before <05048>

him.

7 But the LORD <03068> said <0559> unto Samuel <08050>, Look

<05027> not on <0413> his countenance <04758>, or on the height

<01364> of his stature <06967>; because <03588> I have refused

<03988> him: for [the LORD <03068> seeth <07200>] not as man

<0120> seeth <07200>; for man <0120> looketh <07200> on the

outward <05869> appearance <05869>, but the LORD <03068> looketh

<07200> on the heart <03824>.

8 Then Jesse <03448> called <07121> Abinadab <041>, and made

him pass <05674> before <06440> Samuel <08050>. And he said

<0559>, Neither hath the LORD <03068> chosen <0977> this <02088>.

9 Then Jesse <03448> made Shammah <08048> to pass <05674> by.

And he said <0559>, Neither hath the LORD <03068> chosen <0977>

this <02088>.

10 Again, Jesse <03448> made seven <07651> of his sons <01121>

to pass <05674> before <06440> Samuel <08050>. And Samuel

<08050> said <0559> unto Jesse <03448>, The LORD <03068> hath

not chosen <0977> these <0428>.

11 And Samuel <08050> said <0559> unto Jesse <03448>, Are here

<08552> all <08552> [thy] children <05288>? And he said <0559>,

There remaineth <07604> yet <05750> the youngest <06996>, and,

behold <02009>, he keepeth <07462> the sheep <06629>. And Samuel

<08050> said <0559> unto Jesse <03448>, Send <07971> and fetch

<03947> him: for we will not sit <05437> down till <05704> he

come <0935> hither <06311>.

12 And he sent <07971>, and brought <0935> him in. Now he [was]

ruddy <0132>, [and] withal <05973> of a beautiful <03303>

countenance <05869>, and goodly <02896> to look <07210> to. And

the LORD <03068> said <0559>, Arise <06965>, anoint <04886> him:

for this <02088> [is] he.

13 Then Samuel <08050> took <03947> the horn <07161> of oil

<08081>, and anointed <04886> him in the midst <07130> of his

brethren <0251>: and the Spirit <07307> of the LORD <03068> came

<06743> upon David <01732> from that day <03117> forward <04605>.

So Samuel <08050> rose <06965> up, and went <03212> to Ramah

<07414>.

 14. But the Spirit <07307> of the LORD <03068> departed <05493>

from Saul <07586>, and an evil <07451> spirit <07307> from the

LORD <03068> troubled <01204> him.

 15 And Saul's <07586> servants <05650> said <0559> unto him,

Behold <02009> now <04994>, an evil <07451> spirit <07307> from

God <0430> troubleth <01204> thee.

16 Let our lord <0113> now <04994> command <0559> thy servants

<05650>, [which are] before <06440> thee, to seek <01245> out a

man <0376>, [who is] a cunning <03045> player <05059> on an harp

<03658>: and it shall come <01961> to pass, when the evil

<07451> spirit <07307> from God <0430> is upon thee, that he

shall play <05059> with his hand <03027>, and thou shalt be well

<02895>.

17 And Saul <07586> said <0559> unto his servants <05650>,

Provide <07200> me now <04994> a man <0376> that can play

<05059> well <03190>, and bring <0935> [him] to me.

18 Then answered <06030> one <0259> of the servants <05288>,

and said <0559>, Behold <02009>, I have seen <07200> a son

<01121> of Jesse <03448> the Bethlehemite <01022>, [that is]

cunning <03045> in playing <05059>, and a mighty <01368> valiant

<02428> man, and a man <0376> of war <04421>, and prudent <0995>

in matters <01697>, and a comely <08389> person <0376>, and the

LORD <03068> [is] with him.

 19 Wherefore Saul <07586> sent <07971> messengers <04397> unto

Jesse <03448>, and said <0559>, Send <07971> me David <01732>

thy son <01121>, which <0834> [is] with the sheep <06629>.

20 And Jesse <03448> took <03947> an ass <02543> [laden] with

bread <03899>, and a bottle <04997> of wine <03196>, and a kid,

and sent <07971> [them] by David <01732> his son <01121> unto

Saul <07586>.

21 And David <01732> came <0935> to Saul <07586>, and stood

<05975> before <06440> him: and he loved <0157> him greatly

<03966>; and he became <01961> his armourbearer <03627>.

22 And Saul <07586> sent <07971> to Jesse <03448>, saying

<0559>, Let David <01732>, I pray <04994> thee, stand <05975>

before <06440> me; for he hath found <04672> favour <02580> in

my sight <05869>.

23 And it came <01961> to pass, when the [evil <07451>] spirit

<07307> from God <0430> was upon Saul <07586>, that David

<01732> took <03947> an harp <03658>, and played <05059> with

his hand <03027>: so Saul <07586> was refreshed <07304>, and was

well <02895>, and the evil <07451> spirit <07307> departed

<05493> from him.

1Samuel 17

 1. Now the Philistines <06430> gathered <0622> together their

armies <04264> to battle <04421>, and were gathered <0622>

together at Shochoh <07755>, which <0834> [belongeth] to Judah

<03063>, and pitched <02583> between <0996> Shochoh <07755> and

Azekah <05825>, in Ephesdammim <0658>.

2 And Saul <07586> and the men <0376> of Israel <03478> were

gathered <0622> together <03162>, and pitched <02583> by the

valley <06010> of Elah <0425>, and set the battle <04421> in

array <06186> against <07125> the Philistines <06430>.

 3 And the Philistines <06430> stood <05975> on <0413> a

mountain <02022> on <0413> the one <02088> side, and Israel

<03478> stood <05975> on <0413> a mountain <02022> on <0413> the

other <02088> side: and [there was] a valley <01516> between

<0996> them.

4 And there went <03318> out a champion <01143> out of the camp

<04264> of the Philistines <06430>, named <08034> Goliath

<01555>, of Gath <01661>, whose height <01363> [was] six <08337>

cubits <0520> and a span <02239>.

5 And [he had] an helmet <03553> of brass <05178> upon his head

<07218>, and he [was] armed <03847> with a coat <08302> of mail

<07193>; and the weight <04948> of the coat <08302> [was] five

<02568> thousand <0505> shekels <08255> of brass <05178>.

6 And [he had] greaves <04697> of brass <05178> upon his legs

<07272>, and a target <03591> of brass <05178> between <0996>

his shoulders <03802>.

7 And the staff <02671> of his spear <02595> [was] like a

weaver's <0707> beam <04500>; and his spear's <02595> head

<03852> [weighed] six <08337> hundred <03967> shekels <08255> of

iron <01270>: and one bearing <05375> a shield <06793> went

<01980> before <06440> him.

8 And he stood <05975> and cried <07121> unto the armies

<04634> of Israel <03478>, and said <0559> unto them, Why

<04100> are ye come <03318> out to set [your] battle <04421> in

array <06186>? [am] not I a Philistine <06430>, and ye servants

<05650> to Saul <07586>? choose <01262> you a man <0376> for you,

and let him come <03381> down <03381> to me.

9 If <0518> he be able <03201> to fight <03898> with me, and to

kill <05221> me, then will we be your servants <05650>: but if

<0518> I prevail <03201> against him, and kill <05221> him, then

shall ye be our servants <05650>, and serve <05647> us.

 10 And the Philistine <06430> said <0559>, I defy <02778> the

armies <04634> of Israel <03478> this <02088> day <03117>; give

<05414> me a man <0376>, that we may fight <03898> together

<03162>.

11 When Saul <07586> and all <03605> Israel <03478> heard

<08085> those <0428> words <01697> of the Philistine <06430>,

they were dismayed <02865>, and greatly <03966> afraid <03372>.

 12. Now David <01732> [was] the son <01121> of that Ephrathite

<0673> of Bethlehemjudah <01035>, whose name <08034> [was] Jesse

<03448>; and he had eight <08083> sons <01121>: and the man

<0376> went <0935> among men <0582> [for] an old <02204> man in

the days <03117> of Saul <07586>.

13 And the three <07969> eldest <01419> sons <01121> of Jesse

<03448> went <03212> [and] followed Saul <07586> to the battle

<04421>: and the names <08034> of his three <07969> sons <01121>

that went <01980> to the battle <04421> [were] Eliab <0446> the

firstborn <01060>, and next <04932> unto him Abinadab <041>, and

the third <07992> Shammah <08048>.

14 And David <01732> [was] the youngest <06996>: and the three

<07969> eldest <01419> followed Saul <07586>.

15 But David <01732> went <01980> and returned <07725> from

Saul <07586> to feed <07462> his father's <01> sheep <06629> at

Bethlehem <01035>.

16 And the Philistine <06430> drew near <05066> morning <07925>

and evening <06150>, and presented <03320> himself forty <0705>

days <03117>.

17 And Jesse <03448> said <0559> unto David <01732> his son

<01121>, Take <03947> now <04994> for thy brethren <0251> an

ephah <0374> of this <02088> parched <07039> [corn], and these

<02088> ten <06235> loaves <03899>, and run <07323> to the camp

<04264> to thy brethren <0251>;

18 And carry <0935> these <0428> ten <06235> cheeses unto the

captain <08269> of [their] thousand <0505>, and look <06485> how

thy brethren <0251> fare <07965>, and take <03947> their pledge

<06161>.

19 Now Saul <07586>, and they, and all <03605> the men <0376>

of Israel <03478>, [were] in the valley <06010> of Elah <0425>,

fighting <03898> with the Philistines <06430>.

20 And David <01732> rose <07925> up early <07925> in the

morning <01242>, and left <05203> the sheep <06629> with a

keeper <08104>, and took <05375>, and went <03212>, as Jesse

<03448> had commanded <06680> him; and he came <0935> to the

trench <04570>, as the host <02428> was going <03318> forth

<03318> to the fight <04634>, and shouted <07321> for the battle

<04421>.

21 For Israel <03478> and the Philistines <06430> had put the

battle in array <06186>, army <04634> against <07125> army

<02428>.

22 And David <01732> left <05203> his carriage <03627> in the

hand <03027> of the keeper <08104> of the carriage <03627>, and

ran <07323> into the army <04634>, and came <0935> and saluted

his brethren <0251>.

23 And as he talked <01696> with them, behold <02009>, there

came <05927> up the champion <01143>, the Philistine <06430> of

Gath <01661>, Goliath <01555> by name <08034>, out of the armies

<04630> of the Philistines <06430>, and spake <01696> according

to the same <0428> words <01697>: and David <01732> heard

<08085> [them].

24 And all <03605> the men <0376> of Israel <03478>, when they

saw <07200> the man <0376>, fled <05127> from him, and were sore

<03966> afraid <03372>.

25 And the men <0376> of Israel <03478> said <0559>, Have ye

seen <07200> this <02088> man <0376> that is come <05927> up?

surely <03588> to defy <02778> Israel <03478> is he come <05927>

up: and it shall be, [that] the man <0376> who <0834> killeth

<05221> him, the king <04428> will enrich <06238> him with great

<01419> riches <06239>, and will give <05414> him his daughter

<01323>, and make <06213> his father's <01> house <01004> free

<02670> in Israel <03478>.

26 And David <01732> spake <0559> to the men <0582> that stood

<05975> by him, saying <0559>, What <04100> shall be done

<06213> to the man <0376> that killeth <05221> this <01975>

Philistine <06430>, and taketh <05493> away the reproach <02781>

from Israel <03478>? for who <04310> [is] this <02088>

uncircumcised <06189> Philistine <06430>, that he should defy

<02778> the armies <04634> of the living <02416> God <0430>?

27 And the people <05971> answered <0559> him after this

<02088> manner <01697>, saying <0559>, So <03541> shall it be

done <06213> to the man <0376> that killeth <05221> him.

28 And Eliab <0446> his eldest <01419> brother <0251> heard

<08085> when he spake <01696> unto the men <0582>; and Eliab's

<0446> anger <0639> was kindled <02734> against David <01732>,

and he said <0559>, Why <04100> camest <03381> thou down <03381>

hither? and with whom <04310> hast thou left <05203> those

<02007> few <04592> sheep <06629> in the wilderness <04057>? I

know <03045> thy pride <02087>, and the naughtiness <07455> of

thine heart <03824>; for thou art come <03381> down <03381> that

thou mightest see <07200> the battle <04421>.

 29 And David <01732> said <0559>, What <04100> have I now

<06258> done <06213>? [Is there] not a cause <01697>?

30 And he turned <05437> from him toward another <0312>, and

spake <0559> after the same <02088> manner <01697>: and the

people <05971> answered <01697> him again <07725> after the

former <07223> manner <01697>.

 31. And when the words <01697> were heard <08085> which <0834>

David <01732> spake <01696>, they rehearsed <05046> [them]

before <06440> Saul <07586>: and he sent <03947> for him.

 32 And David <01732> said <0559> to Saul <07586>, Let no <0408>

man's <0120> heart <03820> fail <05307> because <05921> of him;

thy servant <05650> will go <03212> and fight <03898> with this

<02088> Philistine <06430>.

33 And Saul <07586> said <0559> to David <01732>, Thou art not

able <03201> to go <03212> against <0413> this <02088>

Philistine <06430> to fight <03898> with him: for thou [art but]

a youth <05288>, and he a man <0376> of war <04421> from his

youth <05271>.

34 And David <01732> said <0559> unto Saul <07586>, Thy servant

<05650> kept <07462> his father's <01> sheep <06629>, and there

came <0935> a lion <0738>, and a bear <01677>, and took <05375>

a lamb <07716> out of the flock <05739>:

 35 And I went <03318> out after <0310> him, and smote <05221>

him, and delivered <05337> [it] out of his mouth <06310>: and

when he arose <06965> against <05921> me, I caught <02388> [him]

by his beard <02206>, and smote <05221> him, and slew <04191>

him.

36 Thy servant <05650> slew <05221> both <01571> the lion

<0738> and the bear <01677>: and this <02088> uncircumcised

<06189> Philistine <06430> shall be as one <0259> of them,

seeing <03588> he hath defied <02778> the armies <04634> of the

living <02416> God <0430>.

37 David <01732> said <0559> moreover, The LORD <03068> that

delivered <05337> me out of the paw <03027> of the lion <0738>,

and out of the paw <03027> of the bear <01677>, he will deliver

<05337> me out of the hand <03027> of this <02088> Philistine

<06430>. And Saul <07586> said <0559> unto David <01732>, Go

<03212>, and the LORD <03068> be with thee.

38 And Saul <07586> armed <03847> David <01732> with his armour

<04055>, and he put <05414> an helmet <06959> of brass <05178>

upon his head <07218>; also he armed <03847> him with a coat

<08302> of mail <07193>.

39 And David <01732> girded <02296> his sword <02719> upon his

armour <04055>, and he assayed <02974> to go <03212>; for he had

not proved <05254> [it]. And David <01732> said <0559> unto Saul

<07586>, I cannot <03808> go <03212> with these <0428>; for I

have not proved <05254> [them]. And David <01732> put <05493>

them off <05921> him.

 40. And he took <03947> his staff <04731> in his hand <03027>,

and chose <0977> him five <02568> smooth <02512> stones <068>

out of the brook <05158>, and put <07760> them in a shepherd's

<07462> bag <03627> which <0834> he had, even in a scrip <03219>;

and his sling <07050> [was] in his hand <03027>: and he drew

near <05066> to the Philistine <06430>.

41 And the Philistine <06430> came <03212> on and drew near

<07126> unto David <01732>; and the man <0376> that bare <05375>

the shield <06793> [went] before <06440> him.

42 And when the Philistine <06430> looked <05027> about <05027>,

and saw <07200> David <01732>, he disdained <0959> him: for he

was [but] a youth <05288>, and ruddy <0132>, and of a fair

<03303> countenance <04758>.

43 And the Philistine <06430> said <0559> unto David <01732>,

[Am] I a dog <03611>, that thou comest <0935> to me with staves

<04731>? And the Philistine <06430> cursed <07043> David <01732>

by his gods <0430>.

44 And the Philistine <06430> said <0559> to David <01732>,

Come <03212> to me, and I will give <05414> thy flesh <01320>

unto the fowls <05775> of the air <08064>, and to the beasts

<0929> of the field <07704>.

45 Then said <0559> David <01732> to the Philistine <06430>,

Thou comest <0935> to me with a sword <02719>, and with a spear

<02595>, and with a shield <03591>: but I come <0935> to thee in

the name <08034> of the LORD <03068> of hosts <06635>, the God

<0430> of the armies <04634> of Israel <03478>, whom <0834> thou

hast defied <02778>.

46 This <02088> day <03117> will the LORD <03068> deliver

<05462> thee into mine hand <03027>; and I will smite <05221>

thee, and take <05493> thine head <07218> from thee; and I will

give <05414> the carcases <06297> of the host <04264> of the

Philistines <06430> this <02088> day <03117> unto the fowls

<05775> of the air <08064>, and to the wild <02416> beasts

<02416> of the earth <0776>; that all <03605> the earth <0776>

may know <03045> that there is a God <0430> in Israel <03478>.

47 And all <03605> this <02088> assembly <06951> shall know

<03045> that the LORD <03068> saveth <03467> not with sword

<02719> and spear <02595>: for the battle <04421> [is] the

LORD'S <03068>, and he will give <05414> you into our hands

<03027>.

 48. And it came <01961> to pass, when <03588> the Philistine

<06430> arose <06965>, and came <03212> and drew nigh <07126> to

meet <07125> David <01732>, that David <01732> hasted, and ran

<07323> toward the army <04634> to meet <07125> the Philistine

<06430>.

49 And David <01732> put <07971> his hand <03027> in his bag

<03627>, and took <03947> thence <08033> a stone <068>, and

slang <07049> [it], and smote <05221> the Philistine <06430> in

his forehead <04696>, that the stone <068> sunk <02883> into his

forehead <04696>; and he fell <05307> upon his face <06440> to

the earth <0776>.

 50 So David <01732> prevailed <02388> over <04480> the

Philistine <06430> with a sling <07050> and with a stone <068>,

and smote <05221> the Philistine <06430>, and slew <04191> him;

but [there was] no <0369> sword <02719> in the hand <03027> of

David <01732>.

51 Therefore David <01732> ran <07323>, and stood <05975> upon

the Philistine <06430>, and took <03947> his sword <02719>, and

drew <08025> it out of the sheath <08593> thereof, and slew

<04191> him, and cut <03772> off his head <07218> therewith. And

when the Philistines <06430> saw <07200> their champion <01368>

was dead <04191>, they fled <05127>.

52 And the men <0582> of Israel <03478> and of Judah <03063>

arose <06965>, and shouted <07321>, and pursued <07291> the

Philistines <06430>, until <05704> thou come <0935> to the

valley <01516>, and to the gates <08179> of Ekron <06138>. And

the wounded <02491> of the Philistines <06430> fell <05307> down

by the way <01870> to Shaaraim <08189>, even unto Gath <01661>,

and unto Ekron <06138>.

53 And the children <01121> of Israel <03478> returned <07725>

from chasing <01814> after <0310> the Philistines <06430>, and

they spoiled <08155> their tents <04264>.

54 And David <01732> took <03947> the head <07218> of the

Philistine <06430>, and brought <0935> it to Jerusalem <03389>;

but he put <07760> his armour <03627> in his tent <0168>.

 55 And when Saul <07586> saw <07200> David <01732> go <03318>

forth <03318> against <07125> the Philistine <06430>, he said

<0559> unto Abner <074>, the captain <08269> of the host <06635>,

Abner <074>, whose <04310> son <01121> [is] this <02088> youth

<05288>? And Abner <074> said <0559>, [As] thy soul <05315>

liveth <02416>, O king <04428>, I cannot <0518> tell <03045>.

56 And the king <04428> said <0559>, Enquire <07592> thou whose

<04310> son <01121> the stripling <05958> [is].

57 And as David <01732> returned <07725> from the slaughter

<05221> of the Philistine <06430>, Abner <074> took <03947> him,

and brought <0935> him before <06440> Saul <07586> with the head

<07218> of the Philistine <06430> in his hand <03027>.

58 And Saul <07586> said <0559> to him, Whose <04310> son

<01121> [art] thou, [thou] young <05288> man? And David <01732>

answered <0559>, I [am] the son <01121> of thy servant <05650>

Jesse <03448> the Bethlehemite <01022>.

1Samuel 18

 1. And it came <01961> to pass, when he had made an end <03615>

of speaking <01696> unto Saul <07586>, that the soul <05315> of

Jonathan <03083> was knit <07194> with the soul <05315> of David

<01732>, and Jonathan <03083> loved <0157> him as his own soul

<05315>.

2 And Saul <07586> took <03947> him that day <03117>, and would

let him go <07725> no <03808> more home <07725> to his father's

<01> house <01004>.

 3 Then Jonathan <03083> and David <01732> made <03772> a

covenant <01285>, because he loved <0160> him as his own soul

<05315>.

4 And Jonathan <03083> stripped <06584> himself of the robe

<04598> that [was] upon him, and gave <05414> it to David

<01732>, and his garments <04055>, even to his sword <02719>,

and to his bow <07198>, and to his girdle <02290>.

5 And David <01732> went <03318> out whithersoever Saul <07586>

sent <07971> him, [and] behaved <07919> himself wisely <07919>:

and Saul <07586> set <07760> him over <05921> the men <0582> of

war <04421>, and he was accepted <03190> in the sight <05869> of

all <03605> the people <05971>, and also <01571> in the sight

<05869> of Saul's <07586> servants <05650>.

 6. And it came <01961> to pass as they came <0935>, when David

<01732> was returned <07725> from the slaughter <05221> of the

Philistine <06430>, that the women <0802> came <03318> out of

all <03605> cities <05892> of Israel <03478>, singing <07891>

and dancing <04246>, to meet <07125> king <04428> Saul <07586>,

with tabrets <08596>, with joy <08057>, and with instruments

<07991> of musick.

7 And the women <0802> answered <06030> [one another] as they

played <07832>, and said <0559>, Saul <07586> hath slain <05221>

his thousands <0505>, and David <01732> his ten <07233>

thousands <0505>.

8 And Saul <07586> was very <03966> wroth <02734>, and the

saying <01697> displeased him; and he said <0559>, They have

ascribed <05414> unto David <01732> ten <07233> thousands

<07233>, and to me they have ascribed <05414> [but] thousands

<0505>: and [what] can he have more <05750> but the kingdom

<04410>?

9 And Saul <07586> eyed <05770> David <01732> from that day

<03117> and forward <01973>.

10 And it came <01961> to pass on the morrow <04283>, that the

evil <07451> spirit <07307> from God <0430> came <06473> upon

Saul <07586>, and he prophesied <05012> in the midst <08432> of

the house <01004>: and David <01732> played <05059> with his

hand <03027>, as at other times <03117>: and [there was] a

javelin <02595> in Saul's <07586> hand <03027>.

11 And Saul <07586> cast <02904> the javelin <02595>; for he

said <0559>, I will smite <05221> David <01732> even to the wall

<07023> [with it]. And David <01732> avoided <05437> out of his

presence <06440> twice <06471>.

 12. And Saul <07586> was afraid <03372> of David <01732>,

because <03588> the LORD <03068> was with him, and was departed

<05493> from Saul <07586>.

13 Therefore Saul <07586> removed <05493> him from him, and

made <07760> him his captain <08269> over a thousand <0505>; and

he went <03318> out and came <0935> in before <06440> the people

<05971>.

14 And David <01732> behaved <07919> himself wisely <07919> in

all <03605> his ways <01870>; and the LORD <03068> [was] with

him.

15 Wherefore when Saul <07586> saw <07200> that he behaved

<07919> himself very <03966> wisely <07919>, he was afraid

<01481> of him.

16 But all <03605> Israel <03478> and Judah <03063> loved

<0157> David <01732>, because <03588> he went <03318> out and

came <0935> in before <06440> them.

17 And Saul <07586> said <0559> to David <01732>, Behold

<02009> my elder <01419> daughter <01323> Merab <04764>, her

will I give <05414> thee to wife <0802>: only <0389> be thou

valiant for me, and fight <03898> the LORD'S <03068> battles

<04421>. For Saul <07586> said <0559>, Let not mine hand <03027>

be upon him, but let the hand <03027> of the Philistines <06430>

be upon him.

 18 And David <01732> said <0559> unto Saul <07586>, Who <04310>

[am] I? and what <04310> [is] my life <02416>, [or] my father's

<01> family <04940> in Israel <03478>, that I should be son

<02860> in law <02859> to the king <04428>?

19 But it came <01961> to pass at the time <06256> when Merab

<04764> Saul's <07586> daughter <01323> should have been given

<05414> to David <01732>, that she was given <05414> unto Adriel

<05741> the Meholathite <04259> to wife <0802>.

 20 And Michal <04324> Saul's <07586> daughter <01323> loved

<0157> David <01732>: and they told <05046> Saul <07586>, and

the thing <01697> pleased him.

 21 And Saul <07586> said <0559>, I will give <05414> him her,

that she may be a snare <04170> to him, and that the hand

<03027> of the Philistines <06430> may be against him. Wherefore

Saul <07586> said <0559> to David <01732>, Thou shalt this day

<03117> be my son <02859> in law <02860> in [the one of] the

twain <08147>.

 22 And Saul <07586> commanded <06680> his servants <05650>,

[saying], Commune <01696> with David <01732> secretly <03909>,

and say <0559>, Behold <02009>, the king <04428> hath delight

<02654> in thee, and all <03605> his servants <05650> love

<0157> thee: now <06258> therefore be the king's <04428> son

<02859> in law <02860>.

 23 And Saul's <07586> servants <05650> spake <01696> those

<0428> words <01697> in the ears <0241> of David <01732>. And

David <01732> said <0559>, Seemeth <05869> it to you [a] light

<07043> [thing] to be a king's <04428> son <02859> in law

<02860>, seeing that I [am] a poor <07326> man <0376>, and

lightly <07034> esteemed <07043>?

24 And the servants <05650> of Saul <07586> told <05046> him,

saying <0559>, On this <0428> manner <01697> spake <01696> David

<01732>.

25 And Saul <07586> said <0559>, Thus <03541> shall ye say

<0559> to David <01732>, The king <04428> desireth <02656> not

any dowry <04119>, but an hundred <03967> foreskins <06190> of

the Philistines <06430>, to be avenged <05358> of the king's

<04428> enemies <0341>. But Saul <07586> thought <02803> to make

David <01732> fall <05307> by the hand <03027> of the

Philistines <06430>.

26 And when his servants <05650> told <05046> David <01732>

these <0428> words <01697>, it pleased David <01732> well to be

the king's <04428> son <02859> in law <02860>: and the days

<03117> were not expired <04390>.

27 Wherefore David <01732> arose <06965> and went <03212>, he

and his men <0582>, and slew <05221> of the Philistines <06430>

two hundred <03967> men <0376>; and David <01732> brought <0935>

their foreskins <06190>, and they gave them in full <04390> tale

to the king <04428>, that he might be the king's <04428> son

<02859> in law <02860>. And Saul <07586> gave <05414> him Michal

<04324> his daughter <01323> to wife <0802>.

28 And Saul <07586> saw <07200> and knew <03045> that the LORD

<03068> [was] with David <01732>, and [that] Michal <04324>

Saul's <07586> daughter <01323> loved <0157> him.

29 And Saul <07586> was yet the more <03254> afraid <03372> of

David <01732>; and Saul <07586> became <01961> David's <01732>

enemy <0341> continually.

30 Then the princes <08269> of the Philistines <06430> went

<03318> forth <03318>: and it came <01961> to pass, after <0167>

they went <03318> forth <03318>, [that] David <01732> behaved

<07919> himself more wisely <07919> than all <03605> the

servants <05650> of Saul <07586>; so that his name <08034> was

much <03966> set <03335> by.

1Samuel 19

 1. And Saul <07586> spake <01696> to Jonathan <03129> his son

<01121>, and to all <03605> his servants <05650>, that they

should kill <04191> David <01732>.

 2 But Jonathan <03083> Saul's <07586> son <01121> delighted

<02654> much <03966> in David <01732>: and Jonathan <03083> told

<05046> David <01732>, saying <0559>, Saul <07586> my father

<01> seeketh <01245> to kill <04191> thee: now <06258> therefore,

I pray <04994> thee, take heed <08104> to thyself until <05704>

the morning <01242>, and abide <03427> in a secret <05643>

[place], and hide <02244> thyself:

3 And I will go <03318> out and stand <05975> beside <03027> my

father <01> in the field <07704> where <0834> thou [art], and I

will commune <01696> with my father <01> of thee; and what

<04100> I see <07200>, that I will tell <05046> thee.

4 And Jonathan <03083> spake <01696> good <02896> of David

<01732> unto Saul <07586> his father <01>, and said <0559> unto

him, Let not the king <04428> sin <02398> against his servant

<05650>, against David <01732>; because <03588> he hath not

sinned <02398> against thee, and because <03588> his works

<04639> [have <01961> been] to thee-ward very <03966> good

<02896>:

5 For he did put <07760> his life <05315> in his hand <03709>,

and slew <05221> the Philistine <06430>, and the LORD <03068>

wrought <06213> a great <01419> salvation <08668> for all

<03605> Israel <03478>: thou sawest <07200> [it], and didst

rejoice <08055>: wherefore <04100> then wilt thou sin <02398>

against innocent <05355> blood <01818>, to slay <04191> David

<01732> without <02600> a cause <02600>?

6 And Saul <07586> hearkened <08085> unto the voice <06963> of

Jonathan <03083>: and Saul <07586> sware <07650>, [As] the LORD

<03068> liveth <02416>, he shall not be slain <04191>.

 7 And Jonathan <03083> called <07121> David <01732>, and

Jonathan <03083> shewed <05046> him all <03605> those <0428>

things <01697>. And Jonathan <03083> brought <0935> David

<01732> to Saul <07586>, and he was in his presence <06440>, as

in times past <08032>.

 8. And there was war <04421> again <03254>: and David <01732>

went <03318> out, and fought <03898> with the Philistines

<06430>, and slew <05221> them with a great <01419> slaughter

<04347>; and they fled <05127> from him.

9 And the evil <07451> spirit <07307> from the LORD <03068> was

upon Saul <07586>, as he sat <03427> in his house <01004> with

his javelin <02595> in his hand <03027>: and David <01732>

played <05059> with [his] hand <03027>.

10 And Saul <07586> sought <01245> to smite <05221> David

<01732> even to the wall <07023> with the javelin <02595>; but

he slipped <06362> away out of Saul's <07586> presence <06440>,

and he smote <05221> the javelin <02595> into the wall <07023>:

and David <01732> fled <05127>, and escaped <04422> that night

<03915>.

 11. Saul <07586> also sent <07971> messengers <04397> unto

David's <01732> house <01004>, to watch <08104> him, and to slay

<04191> him in the morning <01242>: and Michal <04324> David's

<01732> wife <0802> told <05046> him, saying <0559>, If <0518>

thou save <04422> not thy life to night <03915>, to morrow

<04279> thou shalt be slain <04191>.

 12 So Michal <04324> let <03381> David <01732> down <03381>

through <01157> a window <02474>: and he went <03212>, and fled

<01272>, and escaped <04422>.

13 And Michal <04324> took <03947> an image <08655>, and laid

<07760> [it] in the bed <04296>, and put <07760> a pillow

<03523> of goats <05795>' [hair] for his bolster <04763>, and

covered <03680> [it] with a cloth <0899>.

14 And when Saul <07586> sent <07971> messengers <04397> to

take <03947> David <01732>, she said <0559>, He [is] sick

<02470>.

15 And Saul <07586> sent <07971> the messengers <04397> [again]

to see <07200> David <01732>, saying <0559>, Bring <05927> him

up to me in the bed <04296>, that I may slay <04191> him.

16 And when the messengers <04397> were come <0935> in, behold

<02009>, [there was] an image <08655> in the bed <04296>, with a

pillow <03523> of goats <05795>' [hair] for his bolster <04763>.

17 And Saul <07586> said <0559> unto Michal <04324>, Why

<04100> hast thou deceived <07411> me so <03602>, and sent

<07971> away mine enemy <0341>, that he is escaped <04422>? And

Michal <04324> answered <0559> Saul <07586>, He said <0559> unto

me, Let me go <07971>; why <04100> should I kill <04191> thee?

 18. So David <01732> fled <01272>, and escaped <04422>, and

came <0935> to Samuel <08050> to Ramah <07414>, and told <05046>

him all <03605> that Saul <07586> had done <06213> to him. And

he and Samuel <08050> went <03212> and dwelt <03427> in Naioth

<05121>.

19 And it was told <05046> Saul <07586>, saying <0559>, Behold

<02009>, David <01732> [is] at Naioth <05121> in Ramah <07414>.

20 And Saul <07586> sent <07971> messengers <04397> to take

<03947> David <01732>: and when they saw <07200> the company

<03862> of the prophets <05030> prophesying <05012>, and Samuel

<08050> standing <05975> [as] appointed <05324> over <05921>

them, the Spirit <07307> of God <0430> was upon the messengers

<04397> of Saul <07586>, and they also <01571> prophesied

<05012>.

21 And when it was told <05046> Saul <07586>, he sent <07971>

other <0312> messengers <04397>, and they prophesied <05012>

likewise <01571>. And Saul <07586> sent <07971> messengers

<04397> again <03254> the third <07992> time, and they

prophesied <05012> also <01571>.

22 Then went <03212> he also <01571> to Ramah <07414>, and came

<0935> to a great <01419> well <0953> that [is] in Sechu <07906>:

and he asked <07592> and said <0559>, Where <0375> [are] Samuel

<08050> and David <01732>? And [one] said <0559>, Behold <02009>,

[they be] at Naioth <05121> in Ramah <07414>.

23 And he went <03212> thither <08033> to Naioth <05121> in

Ramah <07414>: and the Spirit <07307> of God <0430> was upon him

also <01571>, and he went <03212> on, and prophesied <05012>,

until <05704> he came <0935> to Naioth <05121> in Ramah <07414>.

24 And he stripped off his clothes <0899> also <01571>, and

prophesied <05012> before <06440> Samuel <08050> in like <01571>

manner <01571>, and lay <05307> down naked <06174> all <03605>

that day <03117> and all <03605> that night <03915>. Wherefore

they say <0559>, [Is] Saul <07586> also <01571> among the

prophets <05030>?

1Samuel 20

 1. And David <01732> fled <01272> from Naioth <05121> in Ramah

<07414>, and came <0935> and said <0559> before <06440> Jonathan

<03083>, What <04100> have I done <06213>? what <04100> [is]

mine iniquity <05771>? and what <04100> [is] my sin <02403>

before <06440> thy father <01>, that he seeketh <01245> my life

<05315>?

2 And he said <0559> unto him, God forbid <02486>; thou shalt

not die <04191>: behold <02009>, my father <01> will do <06213>

nothing either great <01419> or <0176> small <06996>, but that

he will shew <01540> it me: and why <04060> should my father

<01> hide <05641> this <02088> thing <01697> from me? it [is]

not [so].

3 And David <01732> sware <07650> moreover <05750>, and said

<0559>, Thy father <01> certainly knoweth <03045> that I have

<01961> found <04672> grace <02580> in thine eyes <05869>; and

he saith <0559>, Let not Jonathan <03083> know <03045> this

<02063>, lest <06435> he be grieved <06087>: but truly <0199>

[as] the LORD <03068> liveth <02416>, and [as] thy soul <05315>

liveth <02416>, [there is] but a step <06587> between <0996> me

and death <04194>.

 4 Then said <0559> Jonathan <03083> unto David <01732>,

Whatsoever <04100> thy soul <05315> desireth <0559>, I will even

do <06213> [it] for thee.

5 And David <01732> said <0559> unto Jonathan <03083>, Behold

<02009>, to morrow <04279> [is] the new <02320> moon <02320>,

and I should not fail to sit <03427> with the king <04428> at

meat <0398>: but let me go <07971>, that I may hide <05641>

myself in the field <07704> unto the third <07992> [day] at even

<06153>.

6 If <0518> thy father <01> at all miss <06485> me, then say

<0559>, David <01732> earnestly asked <07592> [leave] of me that

he might run <07323> to Bethlehem <01035> his city <05892>: for

[there is] a yearly <03117> sacrifice <02077> there <08033> for

all <03605> the family <04940>.

 7 If <0518> he say <0559> thus <03541>, [It is] well <02896>;

thy servant <05650> shall have peace <07965>: but if <0518> he

be very wroth <02734>, [then] be sure <03045> that evil <07451>

is determined <03615> by him.

8 Therefore thou shalt deal <06213> kindly <02617> with thy

servant <05650>; for thou hast brought <0935> thy servant

<05650> into a covenant <01285> of the LORD <03068> with thee:

notwithstanding, if <0518> there be in me iniquity <05771>, slay

<04191> me thyself <0859>; for why <04100> shouldest thou bring

<0935> me to thy father <01>?

 9. And Jonathan <03083> said <0559>, Far <02486> be it from

thee: for if <0518> I knew <03045> certainly that evil <07451>

were determined <03615> by my father <01> to come <0935> upon

thee, then would not I tell <05046> it thee?

10 Then said <0559> David <01732> to Jonathan <03083>, Who

<04310> shall tell <05046> me? or <0176> what <04100> [if

<0176>] thy father <01> answer <06030> thee roughly <07186>?

11 And Jonathan <03083> said <0559> unto David <01732>, Come

<03212>, and let us go <03318> out into the field <07704>. And

they went <03318> out both <08174> of them into the field

<07704>.

 12 And Jonathan <03083> said <0559> unto David <01732>, O LORD

<03068> God <0430> of Israel <03478>, when <03588> I have

sounded <02713> my father <01> about to morrow <04279> any time

<06256>, [or] the third <07992> [day], and, behold <02009>, [if

there be] good <02896> toward <0413> David <01732>, and I then

<0227> send <07971> not unto thee, and shew <01540> it thee;

 13 The LORD <03068> do <06213> so <03541> and much <03254> more

<03254> to Jonathan <03083>: but if <03588> it please <03190> my

father <01> [to do] thee evil <07451>, then I will shew <01540>

it thee, and send <07971> thee away, that thou mayest go <01980>

in peace <07965>: and the LORD <03068> be with thee, as he hath

been <01961> with my father <01>.

14 And thou shalt not only while <0518> yet <05750> I live

<02416> shew <06213> me the kindness <02617> of the LORD <03068>,

 that I die <04191> not:

15 But [also] thou shalt not cut <03772> off thy kindness

<02617> from my house <01004> for ever <05769>: no, not when the

LORD <03068> hath cut <03772> off the enemies <0341> of David

<01732> every <0376> one <0376> from the face <06440> of the

earth <0127>.

16 So Jonathan <03083> made <03772> [a covenant] with the house

<01004> of David <01732>, [saying], Let the LORD <03068> even

require <01245> [it] at the hand <03027> of David's <01732>

enemies <0341>.

17 And Jonathan <03083> caused David <01732> to swear <07650>

again <03254>, because he loved <0160> him: for he loved <0157>

him as he loved <0160> his own soul <05315>.

18 Then Jonathan <03083> said <0559> to David <01732>, To

morrow <04279> [is] the new <02320> moon <02320>: and thou shalt

be missed <06485>, because <03588> thy seat <04186> will be

empty <06485>.

19 And [when] thou hast stayed three <08027> days, [then] thou

shalt go <03381> down <03381> quickly <03966>, and come <0935>

to the place <04725> where thou didst hide <05641> thyself when

the business <04639> was [in hand], and shalt remain <03427> by

the stone <068> Ezel <0237>.

 20 And I will shoot <03384> three <07969> arrows <02671> on the

side <06654> [thereof], as though I shot <07971> at a mark

<04307>.

 21 And, behold <02009>, I will send <07971> a lad <05288>,

[saying], Go <03212>, find <04672> out the arrows <02671>. If

<0518> I expressly <0559> say <0559> unto the lad <05288>,

Behold <02009>, the arrows <02671> [are] on this <02007> side of

thee, take <03947> them; then come <0935> thou: for [there is]

peace <07965> to thee, and no <0369> hurt <01697>; [as] the LORD

<03068> liveth <02416>.

 22 But if <0518> I say <0559> thus <03541> unto the young

<05958> man <05958>, Behold <02009>, the arrows <02671> [are]

beyond <04973> thee; go <03212> thy way <03212>: for the LORD

<03068> hath sent <07971> thee away.

23 And [as touching] the matter <01697> which <0834> thou and I

have spoken <01696> of, behold <02009>, the LORD <03068> [be]

between <0996> thee and me for ever <05769>.

 24. So David <01732> hid <05641> himself in the field <07704>:

and when the new <02320> moon <02320> was come <01961>, the king

<04428> sat <03427> him down to eat <0398> meat <03899>.

25 And the king <04428> sat <03427> upon his seat <04186>, as

at other times <06471>, [even] upon a seat <04186> by the wall

<07023>: and Jonathan <03083> arose <06965>, and Abner <074> sat

<03427> by Saul's <07586> side <06654>, and David's <01732>

place <04725> was empty <06485>.

 26 Nevertheless Saul <07586> spake <01696> not any <03972>

thing that day <03117>: for he thought <0559>, Something <04745>

hath befallen <04745> him, he [is] not clean <02889>; surely

<03588> he [is] not clean <02889>.

27 And it came <01961> to pass on the morrow <04283>, [which

was] the second <08145> [day] of the month <02320>, that David's

<01732> place <04725> was empty <06485>: and Saul <07586> said

<0559> unto Jonathan <03083> his son <01121>, Wherefore <04069>

cometh <0935> not the son <01121> of Jesse <03448> to meat

<03899>, neither <01571> yesterday <08543>, nor <01571> to day

<03117>?

 28 And Jonathan <03083> answered <06030> Saul <07586>, David

<01732> earnestly asked <07592> [leave] of me [to go] to

Bethlehem <01035>:

 29 And he said <0559>, Let me go <07971>, I pray <04994> thee;

for our family <04940> hath a sacrifice <02077> in the city

<05892>; and my brother <0251>, he hath commanded <06680> me [to

be there]: and now <06258>, if <0518> I have found <04672>

favour <02580> in thine eyes <05869>, let me get <04422> away

<04422>, I pray <04994> thee, and see <07200> my brethren <0251>.

Therefore he cometh <0935> not unto the king's <04428> table

<07979>.

 30 Then Saul's <07586> anger <0639> was kindled <02734> against

Jonathan <03083>, and he said <0559> unto him, Thou son <01121>

of the perverse <05753> rebellious <04780> [woman], do not I

know <03045> that thou hast chosen <0977> the son <01121> of

Jesse <03448> to thine own confusion <01322>, and unto the

confusion <01322> of thy mother's <0517> nakedness <06172>?

31 For as long <03117> as the son <01121> of Jesse <03448>

liveth <02425> upon the ground <0127>, thou shalt not be

established <03559>, nor thy kingdom <04438>. Wherefore now

<06258> send <07971> and fetch <03947> him unto me, for he shall

surely die <04191>.

 32 And Jonathan <03083> answered <06030> Saul <07586> his

father <01>, and said <0559> unto him, Wherefore <04100> shall

he be slain <04191>? what <04100> hath he done <06213>?

 33 And Saul <07586> cast <02904> a javelin <02595> at <05921>

him to smite <05221> him: whereby Jonathan <03083> knew <03045>

that it was determined <03615> of his father <01> to slay

<04191> David <01732>.

34 So Jonathan <03083> arose <06965> from the table <07979> in

fierce <02750> anger <0639>, and did eat <0398> no <03808> meat

<03899> the second <08145> day <03117> of the month <02320>: for

he was grieved <06087> for David <01732>, because <03588> his

father <01> had done him shame <03637>.

 35. And it came <01961> to pass in the morning <01242>, that

Jonathan <03083> went <03318> out into the field <07704> at the

time appointed <04150> with David <01732>, and a little <06996>

lad <05288> with him.

36 And he said <0559> unto his lad <05288>, Run <07323>, find

<04672> out now <04994> the arrows <02671> which <0834> I shoot

<03384>. [And] as the lad <05288> ran <07323>, he shot <03384>

an arrow <02678> beyond <05674> him.

37 And when the lad <05288> was come <0935> to the place

<04725> of the arrow <02678> which <0834> Jonathan <03083> had

shot <03384>, Jonathan <03083> cried <07121> after <0311> the

lad <05288>, and said <0559>, [Is] not the arrow <02678> beyond

<01973> thee?

38 And Jonathan <03083> cried <07121> after <0311> the lad

<05288>, Make speed <04120>, haste <02363>, stay <05975> not.

And Jonathan's <03129> lad <05288> gathered <03950> up the

arrows <02678>, and came <0935> to his master <0113>.

39 But the lad <05288> knew <03045> not any <03972> thing: only

<0389> Jonathan <03083> and David <01732> knew <03045> the

matter <01697>.

40 And Jonathan <03083> gave <05414> his artillery <03627> unto

his lad <05288>, and said <0559> unto him, Go <03212>, carry

<0935> [them] to the city <05892>.

41 [And] as soon as the lad <05288> was gone <0935>, David

<01732> arose <06965> out of [a place] toward <0681> the south

<05045>, and fell <05307> on his face <0639> to the ground

<0776>, and bowed <07812> himself three <07969> times <06471>:

and they kissed <05401> one <0376> another <07453>, and wept

<01058> one <0376> with another <07453>, until <05704> David

<01732> exceeded <01431>.

42 And Jonathan <03083> said <0559> to David <01732>, Go

<03212> in peace <07965>, forasmuch as we have sworn <07650>

both <08174> of us in the name <08034> of the LORD <03068>,

saying <0559>, The LORD <03068> be between <0996> me and thee,

and between <0996> my seed <02233> and thy seed <02233> for ever

<05769>. And he arose <06965> and departed <03212>: and Jonathan

<03083> went <0935> into the city <05892>.

1Samuel 21

 1. Then came <0935> David <01732> to Nob <05011> to Ahimelech

<0288> the priest <03548>: and Ahimelech <0288> was afraid

<02729> at the meeting <07125> of David <01732>, and said <0559>

unto him, Why <04069> [art] thou alone <0905>, and no <0369> man

<0376> with thee?

2 And David <01732> said <0559> unto Ahimelech <0288> the

priest <03548>, The king <04428> hath commanded <06680> me a

business <01697>, and hath said <0559> unto me, Let no <0408>

man <0376> know <03045> any <03972> thing <01697> of the

business <01697> whereabout <0834> I send <07971> thee, and what

<0834> I have commanded <06680> thee: and I have appointed

<03045> [my] servants <05288> to such <06423> and such <0492> a

place <04725>.

3 Now therefore what <04100> is under <08478> thine hand

<03027>? give <05414> [me] five <02568> [loaves of] bread

<03899> in mine hand <03027>, or <0176> what there is present

<04672>.

4 And the priest <03548> answered <06030> David <01732>, and

said <0559>, [There is] no <0369> common <02455> bread <03899>

under <08478> mine hand <03027>, but there is hallowed <06944>

bread <03899>; if <0518> the young <05288> men have kept <08104>

themselves at <0389> least <0389> from women <0802>.

5 And David <01732> answered <06030> the priest <03548>, and

said <0559> unto him, Of a truth women <0802> [have been] kept

<06113> from us about these three <08032> days <08543>, since I

came <03318> out, and the vessels <03627> of the young <05288>

men are holy <06944>, and [the bread is] in a manner <01870>

common <02455>, yea <0637>, though <03588> it were sanctified

<06942> this day <03117> in the vessel <03627>.

6 So the priest <03548> gave <05414> him hallowed <06944>

[bread]: for there was no <03808> bread <03899> there <08033>

but the shewbread, that was taken <05493> from before <06440>

the LORD <03068>, to put <07760> hot <02527> bread <03899> in

the day <03117> when it was taken <03947> away.

7 Now a certain man <0376> of the servants <05650> of Saul

<07586> [was] there that day <03117>, detained <06113> before

<06440> the LORD <03068>; and his name <08034> [was] Doeg

<01673>, an Edomite <0130>, the chiefest <047> of the herdmen

<07462> that [belonged] to Saul <07586>.

8 And David <01732> said <0559> unto Ahimelech <0288>, And is

there not here <06311> under <08478> thine hand <03027> spear

<02595> or <0176> sword <02719>? for I have neither brought

<03947> my sword <02719> nor <01571> my weapons <03627> with me,

because <03588> the king's <04428> business <01697> required

<01961> haste <05169>.

9 And the priest <03548> said <0559>, The sword <02719> of

Goliath <01555> the Philistine <06430>, whom <0834> thou slewest

<05221> in the valley <06010> of Elah <0425>, behold <02009>, it

[is here] wrapped <03874> in a cloth <08071> behind <0310> the

ephod <0646>: if <0518> thou wilt take <03947> that, take

<03947> [it]: for [there is] no <0369> other <0312> save <02108>

that here <02088>. And David <01732> said <0559>, [There is]

none <0369> like that; give <05414> it me.

 10. And David <01732> arose <06965>, and fled <01272> that day

<03117> for fear <06440> of Saul <07586>, and went <0935> to

Achish <0397> the king <04428> of Gath <01661>.

11 And the servants <05650> of Achish <0397> said <0559> unto

him, [Is] not this <02088> David <01732> the king <04428> of the

land <0776>? did they not sing <06030> one to another of him in

dances <04246>, saying <0559>, Saul <07586> hath slain <05221>

his thousands <0505>, and David <01732> his ten <07233>

thousands <07233>?

 12 And David <01732> laid <07760> up these <0428> words <01697>

in his heart <03824>, and was sore <03966> afraid <03372> of

Achish <0397> the king <04428> of Gath <01661>.

13 And he changed <08138> his behaviour <02940> before <05869>

them, and feigned himself mad <01984> in their hands <03027>,

and scrabbled <08427> on <05921> the doors <01817> of the gate

<08179>, and let his spittle <07388> fall <03381> down <03381>

upon his beard <02206>.

14 Then said <0559> Achish <0397> unto his servants <05650>, Lo

<02009>, ye see <07200> the man <0376> is mad <07696>: wherefore

<04100> [then] have ye brought <0935> him to me?

15 Have I need <02638> of mad <07696> men, that ye have brought

<0935> this <02088> [fellow] to play the mad <07696> man in my

presence <05921>? shall this <02088> [fellow] come <0935> into

<0413> my house <01004>?

1Samuel 22

 1. David <01732> therefore departed <03212> thence <08033>, and

escaped <04422> to the cave <04631> Adullam <05725>: and when

his brethren <0251> and all <03605> his father's <01> house

<01004> heard <08085> [it], they went <03381> down <03381>

thither <08033> to him.

2 And every <03608> one <0376> [that was] in distress <04689>,

and every <03608> one <0376> that [was] in debt <05378>, and

every <03608> one <0376> [that was] discontented, gathered

<06908> themselves unto him; and he became <01961> a captain

<08269> over <05921> them: and there were with him about four

<0702> hundred <03967> men <0376>.

3 And David <01732> went <03212> thence <08033> to Mizpeh

<04708> of Moab <04124>: and he said <0559> unto the king

<04428> of Moab <04124>, Let my father <01> and my mother <0517>,

I pray <04994> thee, come <03318> forth <03318>, [and be] with

you, till <05704> I know <03045> what <04100> God <0430> will do

<06213> for me.

4 And he brought <05148> them before the king <04428> of Moab

<04124>: and they dwelt <03427> with him all <03605> the while

<03117> that David <01732> was in the hold <04686>.

5 And the prophet <05030> Gad <01410> said <0559> unto David

<01732>, Abide <03427> not in the hold <04686>; depart <03212>,

and get <0935> thee into the land <0776> of Judah <03063>. Then

David <01732> departed <03212>, and came <0935> into the forest

<03293> of Hareth <02802>.

 6. When Saul <07586> heard <08085> that David <01732> was

discovered <03045>, and the men <0582> that [were] with him,

(now Saul <07586> abode <03427> in Gibeah <01390> under <08478>

a tree <0815> in Ramah <07414>, having his spear <02595> in his

hand <03027>, and all <03605> his servants <05650> [were]

standing <05324> about <05921> him;)

7 Then Saul <07586> said <0559> unto his servants <05650> that

stood <05324> about <05921> him, Hear <08085> now <04994>, ye

Benjamites <01145>; will the son <01121> of Jesse <03448> give

<05414> every <03608> one of you fields <07704> and vineyards

<03754>, [and] make <07760> you all <03605> captains <08269> of

thousands <0505>, and captains <08269> of hundreds <03967>;

8 That all <03605> of you have conspired <07194> against

<05921> me, and [there is] none that sheweth me that my son

<01121> hath made <03772> a league <03772> with the son <01121>

of Jesse <03448>, and [there is] none <0369> of you that is

sorry <02470> for me, or sheweth unto me that my son <01121>

hath stirred <06965> up my servant <05650> against <05921> me,

to lie <08266> in wait <0693>, as at this <02088> day <03117>?

9 Then answered <06030> Doeg <01673> the Edomite <0130>, which

<01931> was set <05324> over <05921> the servants <05650> of

Saul <07586>, and said <0559>, I saw <07200> the son <01121> of

Jesse <03448> coming <0935> to Nob <05011>, to Ahimelech <0288>

the son <01121> of Ahitub <0285>.

10 And he enquired <07592> of the LORD <03068> for him, and

gave <05414> him victuals <06720>, and gave <05414> him the

sword <02719> of Goliath <01555> the Philistine <06430>.

11 Then the king <04428> sent <07971> to call <07121> Ahimelech

<0288> the priest <03548>, the son <01121> of Ahitub <0285>, and

all <03605> his father's <01> house <01004>, the priests <03548>

that [were] in Nob <05011>: and they came <0935> all <03605> of

them to the king <04428>.

 12 And Saul <07586> said <0559>, Hear <08085> now <04994>, thou

son <01121> of Ahitub <0285>. And he answered <0559>, Here

<02005> I [am], my lord <0113>.

13 And Saul <07586> said <0559> unto him, Why <04100> have ye

conspired <07194> against <05921> me, thou and the son <01121>

of Jesse <03448>, in that thou hast given <05414> him bread

<03899>, and a sword <02719>, and hast enquired <07592> of God

<0430> for him, that he should rise <06965> against <0413> me,

to lie <08266> in wait <0693>, as at this <02088> day <03117>?

14 Then Ahimelech <0288> answered <06030> the king <04428>, and

said <0559>, And who <04310> [is so] faithful <0539> among all

<03605> thy servants <05650> as David <01732>, which is the

king's <04428> son <02860> in law <02859>, and goeth <05493> at

<0413> thy bidding <04928>, and is honourable <03513> in thine

house <01004>?

 15 Did I then <03117> begin <02490> to enquire <07592> of God

<0430> for him? be it far <02486> from me: let not the king

<04428> impute <07760> [any <03605>] thing <01697> unto his

servant <05650>, [nor] to all <03605> the house <01004> of my

father <01>: for thy servant <05650> knew <03045> nothing of all

<03605> this <02063>, less <06996> or <0176> more <01490>.

16 And the king <04428> said <0559>, Thou shalt surely die

<04191>, Ahimelech <0288>, thou, and all <03605> thy father's

<01> house <01004>.

17 And the king <04428> said <0559> unto the footmen <07328>

that stood <05324> about <05921> him, Turn <05437>, and slay

<04191> the priests <03548> of the LORD <03068>; because <03588>

their hand <03027> also <01571> [is] with David <01732>, and

because <03588> they knew <03045> when <03588> he fled <01272>,

and did not shew <01540> it to me. But the servants <05650> of

the king <04428> would <014> not put <07971> forth <07971> their

hand <03027> to fall <06293> upon the priests <03548> of the

LORD <03068>.

18 And the king <04428> said <0559> to Doeg <01673>, Turn

<05437> thou, and fall <06293> upon the priests <03548>. And

Doeg <01673> the Edomite <0130> turned <05437>, and he fell

<06298> upon the priests <03548>, and slew <04191> on that day

<03117> fourscore <08084> and five <02568> persons <0376> that

did wear <05375> a linen <0906> ephod <0646>.

19 And Nob <05011>, the city <05892> of the priests <03548>,

smote <05221> he with the edge <06310> of the sword <02719>,

both men <0376> and women <0802>, children <05768> and sucklings

<03243>, and oxen <07794>, and asses <02543>, and sheep <07716>,

with the edge <06310> of the sword <02719>.

 20. And one <0259> of the sons <01121> of Ahimelech <0288> the

son <01121> of Ahitub <0285>, named <08034> Abiathar <054>,

escaped <04422>, and fled <01272> after <0310> David <01732>.

21 And Abiathar <054> shewed <05046> David <01732> that Saul

<07586> had slain <02026> the LORD'S <03068> priests <03548>.

 22 And David <01732> said <0559> unto Abiathar <054>, I knew

<03045> [it] that day <03117>, when <03588> Doeg <01673> the

Edomite [was] there <08033>, that he would surely tell <05046>

Saul <07586>: I have occasioned <05437> [the death] of all

<03605> the persons <05315> of thy father's <01> house <01004>.

23 Abide <03427> thou with me, fear <03372> not: for he that

seeketh <01245> my life <05315> seeketh <01245> thy life <05315>:

but with me thou [shalt be] in safeguard <04931>.

1Samuel 23

 1. Then they told <05046> David <01732>, saying <0559>, Behold

<02009>, the Philistines <06430> fight <03898> against Keilah

<07084>, and they rob <08154> the threshingfloors <01637>.

2 Therefore David <01732> enquired <07592> of the LORD <03068>,

saying <0559>, Shall I go <03212> and smite <05221> these <0428>

Philistines <06430>? And the LORD <03068> said <0559> unto David

<01732>, Go <03212>, and smite <05221> the Philistines <06430>,

and save <03467> Keilah <07084>.

 3 And David's <01732> men <0582> said <0559> unto him, Behold

<02009>, we be afraid <03373> here <06311> in Judah <03063>: how

<0637> much <0637> more then <03117> if <03588> we come <03212>

to Keilah <07084> against <0413> the armies <04634> of the

Philistines <06430>?

4 Then David <01732> enquired <07592> of the LORD <03068> yet

<05750> again <03254>. And the LORD <03068> answered <06030> him

and said <0559>, Arise <06965>, go <03381> down <03381> to

Keilah <07084>; for I will deliver <05414> the Philistines

<06430> into thine hand <03027>.

5 So David <01732> and his men <0582> went <03212> to Keilah

<07084>, and fought <03898> with the Philistines <06430>, and

brought <05090> away their cattle <04735>, and smote <05221>

them with a great <01419> slaughter <04347>. So David <01732>

saved <03467> the inhabitants <03427> of Keilah <07084>.

6 And it came <01961> to pass, when Abiathar <054> the son

<01121> of Ahimelech <0288> fled <01272> to David <01732> to

Keilah <07084>, [that] he came <03318> down <03381> [with] an

ephod <0646> in his hand <03027>.

 7. And it was told <05046> Saul <07586> that David <01732> was

come <0935> to Keilah <07084>. And Saul <07586> said <0559>, God

<0430> hath delivered <05234> him into mine hand <03027>; for he

is shut <05462> in, by entering <0935> into a town <05892> that

hath gates <01817> and bars <01280>.

8 And Saul <07586> called <08085> all <03605> the people

<05971> together <03162> to war <04421>, to go <03381> down

<03381> to Keilah <07084>, to besiege <06696> David <01732> and

his men <0582>.

9 And David <01732> knew <03045> that Saul <07586> secretly

<02790> practised <02790> mischief <07451> against <05921> him;

and he said <0559> to Abiathar <054> the priest <03548>, Bring

<05066> hither <05066> the ephod <0646>.

 10 Then said <0559> David <01732>, O LORD <03068> God <0430> of

Israel <03478>, thy servant <05650> hath certainly heard <08085>

that Saul <07586> seeketh <01245> to come <0935> to Keilah

<07084>, to destroy <07843> the city <05892> for my sake <05668>.

11 Will the men <01167> of Keilah <07084> deliver <05462> me up

into his hand <03027>? will Saul <07586> come <03381> down

<03381>, as thy servant <05650> hath heard <08085>? O LORD

<03068> God <0430> of Israel <03478>, I beseech <04994> thee,

tell <05046> thy servant <05650>. And the LORD <03068> said

<0559>, He will come <03381> down <03381>.

12 Then said <0559> David <01732>, Will the men <01167> of

Keilah <07084> deliver <05462> me and my men <0582> into the

hand <03027> of Saul <07586>? And the LORD <03068> said <0559>,

They will deliver <05462> [thee] up.

13 Then David <01732> and his men <0582>, [which were] about

six <08337> hundred <03967>, arose <06965> and departed <03318>

out of Keilah <07084>, and went <01980> whithersoever <0834>

they could go <01980>. And it was told <05046> Saul <07586> that

David <01732> was escaped <04422> from Keilah <07084>; and he

forbare <02308> to go <03318> forth <03318>.

 14. And David <01732> abode <03427> in the wilderness <04057>

in strong <04679> holds <04679>, and remained <03427> in a

mountain <02022> in the wilderness <04057> of Ziph <02128>. And

Saul <07586> sought <01245> him every <03608> day <03117>, but

God <0430> delivered <05414> him not into his hand <03027>.

15 And David <01732> saw <07200> that Saul <07586> was come

<03318> out to seek <01245> his life <05315>: and David <01732>

[was] in the wilderness <04057> of Ziph <02128> in a wood

<02793>.

 16 And Jonathan <03083> Saul's <07586> son <01121> arose

<06965>, and went <03212> to David <01732> into the wood <02793>,

and strengthened <02388> his hand <03027> in God <0430>.

17 And he said <0559> unto him, Fear <03372> not: for the hand

<03027> of Saul <07586> my father <01> shall not find <04672>

thee; and thou shalt be king <04427> over <05921> Israel <03478>,

and I shall be next <04932> unto thee; and that also <01571>

Saul <07586> my father <01> knoweth <03045>.

 18 And they two <08147> made <03772> a covenant <01285> before

<06440> the LORD <03068>: and David <01732> abode <03427> in the

wood <02793>, and Jonathan <03083> went <01980> to his house

<01004>.

 19. Then came <05927> up the Ziphites <02130> to Saul <07586>

to Gibeah <01390>, saying <0559>, Doth not David <01732> hide

<05641> himself with us in strong <04679> holds <04679> in the

wood <02793>, in the hill <01389> of Hachilah <02444>, which

<0834> [is] on the south <03225> of Jeshimon <03452>?

 20 Now <06258> therefore, O king <04428>, come <03381> down

<03381> according to all <03605> the desire <0183> of thy soul

<05315> to come <03381> down <03381>; and our part [shall be] to

deliver <05462> him into the king's <04428> hand <03027>.

21 And Saul <07586> said <0559>, Blessed <01288> [be] ye of the

LORD <03068>; for ye have compassion <02550> on me.

 22 Go <03212>, I pray <04994> you, prepare <03559> yet, and

know <03045> and see <07200> his place <04725> where <0834> his

haunt <07272> is, [and] who <04310> hath seen <07200> him there

<08033>: for it is told <0559> me [that] he dealeth very

subtilly <06191>.

23 See <07200> therefore, and take knowledge <03045> of all

<03605> the lurking <04224> places where he hideth <02244>

himself, and come <07725> ye again <07725> to me with the

certainty <03559>, and I will go <01980> with you: and it shall

come <01961> to pass, if <0518> he be in the land <0776>, that I

will search <02664> him out throughout all <03605> the thousands

<0505> of Judah <03063>.

24 And they arose <06965>, and went <03212> to Ziph <02128>

before <06440> Saul <07586>: but David <01732> and his men

<0582> [were] in the wilderness <04057> of Maon <04584>, in the

plain <06160> on <0413> the south <03225> of Jeshimon <03452>.

25 Saul <07586> also and his men <0582> went <03212> to seek

<01245> [him]. And they told <05046> David <01732>: wherefore he

came <03381> down <03381> into a rock <05553>, and abode <03427>

in the wilderness <04057> of Maon <04584>. And when Saul <07586>

heard <08085> [that], he pursued <07291> after <0310> David

<01732> in the wilderness <04057> of Maon <04584>.

 26 And Saul <07586> went <03212> on this <02088> side <06654>

of the mountain <02022>, and David <01732> and his men <0582> on

that side <06654> of the mountain <02022>: and David <01732>

made haste <02648> to get <03212> away <03212> for fear <06440>

of Saul <07586>; for Saul <07586> and his men <0582> compassed

<05849> David <01732> and his men <0582> round about to take

<08610> them.

 27 But there came <0935> a messenger <04397> unto Saul <07586>,

saying <0559>, Haste <04116> thee, and come <03212>; for the

Philistines <06430> have invaded <06584> the land <0776>.

28 Wherefore Saul <07586> returned <07725> from pursuing

<07291> after <0310> David <01732>, and went <03212> against

<07125> the Philistines <06430>: therefore they called <07121>

that place <04725> Selahammahlekoth <05555>.

29 And David <01732> went <05927> up from thence <08033>, and

dwelt <03427> in strong <04679> holds <04679> at Engedi <05872>.

1Samuel 24

 1. And it came <01961> to pass, when <0834> Saul <07586> was

returned <07725> from following <0310> the Philistines <06430>,

that it was told <05046> him, saying <0559>, Behold <02009>,

David <01732> [is] in the wilderness <04057> of Engedi <05872>.

 2 Then Saul <07586> took <03947> three <07969> thousand <0505>

chosen <0970> men <0376> out of all <03605> Israel <03478>, and

went <03212> to seek <01245> David <01732> and his men <0582>

upon the rocks <06697> of the wild <03277> goats <03277>.

3 And he came <0935> to the sheepcotes <06629> by the way

<01870>, where <08033> [was] a cave <04631>; and Saul <07586>

went <0935> in to cover <05526> his feet <07272>: and David

<01732> and his men <0582> remained <03427> in the sides <03411>

of the cave <04631>.

4 And the men <0582> of David <01732> said <0559> unto him,

Behold <02009> the day <03117> of which <0834> the LORD <03068>

said <0559> unto thee, Behold <02009>, I will deliver <05414>

thine enemy <0341> into thine hand <03027>, that thou mayest do

<06213> to him as it shall seem good <03190> unto thee. Then

David <01732> arose <06965>, and cut <03772> off the skirt

<03671> of Saul's <07586> robe <04598> privily <03909>.

5 And it came <01961> to pass afterward, that David's <01732>

heart <03820> smote <05221> him, because he had cut <03772> off

Saul's <07586> skirt <03671>.

6 And he said <0559> unto his men <0582>, The LORD <03068>

forbid <02486> that I should do <06213> this <02088> thing

<01697> unto my master <0113>, the LORD'S <03068> anointed

<04899>, to stretch <07971> forth mine hand <03027> against him,

seeing he [is] the anointed <04899> of the LORD <03068>.

7 So David <01732> stayed <08156> his servants <0582> with

these words <01697>, and suffered <05414> them not to rise

<06965> against <0413> Saul <07586>. But Saul <07586> rose

<06965> up out of the cave <04631>, and went <03212> on [his]

way <01870>.

8 David <01732> also arose <06965> afterward, and went <03318>

out of the cave <04631>, and cried <07121> after <0310> Saul

<07586>, saying <0559>, My lord <0113> the king <04428>. And

when Saul <07586> looked <05027> behind <0310> him, David

<01732> stooped <06915> with his face <0639> to the earth <0776>,

 and bowed <07812> himself.

 9. And David <01732> said <0559> to Saul <07586>, Wherefore

<04100> hearest <08085> thou men's <0120> words <01697>, saying

<0559>, Behold <02009>, David <01732> seeketh <01245> thy hurt

<07451>?

10 Behold <02009>, this day <03117> thine eyes <05869> have

seen <07200> how <0834> that the LORD <03068> had delivered

<05414> thee to day <03117> into mine hand <03027> in the cave

<04631>: and [some] bade <0559> [me] kill <02026> thee: but

[mine eye] spared <02347> thee; and I said <0559>, I will not

put <07971> forth <07971> mine hand <03027> against my lord

<0113>; for he [is] the LORD'S <03068> anointed <04899>.

11 Moreover, my father <01>, see <07200>, yea <0637>, see

<07200> the skirt <03671> of thy robe <04598> in my hand <03027>:

for in that I cut <03772> off the skirt <03671> of thy robe

<04598>, and killed <02026> thee not, know <03045> thou and see

<07200> that [there is] neither <0369> evil <07451> nor

transgression <06588> in mine hand <03027>, and I have not

sinned <02398> against thee; yet thou huntest <06658> my soul

<05315> to take <03947> it.

12 The LORD <03068> judge <08199> between <0996> me and thee,

and the LORD <03068> avenge <05358> me of thee: but mine hand

<03027> shall not be upon thee.

13 As saith <0559> the proverb <04912> of the ancients <06931>,

Wickedness <07562> proceedeth <03318> from the wicked <07563>:

but mine hand <03027> shall not be upon thee.

14 After <0310> whom <04310> is the king <04428> of Israel

<03478> come <03318> out? after <0310> whom <04310> dost thou

pursue <07291>? after <0310> a dead <04191> dog <03611>, after

<0310> a flea <06550>.

15 The LORD <03068> therefore be judge <01784>, and judge

<08199> between <0996> me and thee, and see <07200>, and plead

<07378> my cause <07379>, and deliver <08199> me out of thine

hand <03027>.

 16. And it came <01961> to pass, when David <01732> had made an

end <03615> of speaking <01696> these <0428> words <01697> unto

Saul <07586>, that Saul <07586> said <0559>, [Is] this <02088>

thy voice <06963>, my son <01121> David <01732>? And Saul

<07586> lifted <05375> up his voice <06963>, and wept <01058>.

17 And he said <0559> to David <01732>, Thou [art] more

righteous <06662> than I: for thou hast rewarded <01580> me good

<02896>, whereas I have rewarded <01580> thee evil <07451>.

18 And thou hast shewed <05046> this day <03117> how that thou

hast dealt <06213> well <02896> with me: forasmuch as when the

LORD <03068> had delivered <05462> me into thine hand <03027>,

thou killedst <02026> me not.

 19 For if <03588> a man <0376> find <04672> his enemy <0341>,

will he let him go <07971> well <02896> away <01870>? wherefore

the LORD <03068> reward <07999> thee good <02896> for that thou

hast done <06213> unto me this <02088> day <03117>.

 20 And now <06258>, behold <02009>, I know <03045> well that

thou shalt surely be king <04428>, and that the kingdom <04467>

of Israel <03478> shall be established <06965> in thine hand

<03027>.

21 Swear <07650> now <06258> therefore unto me by the LORD

<03068>, that thou wilt not cut <03772> off my seed <02233>

after <0310> me, and that thou wilt not destroy <08045> my name

<08034> out of my father's <01> house <01004>.

22 And David <01732> sware <07650> unto Saul <07586>. And Saul

<07586> went <03212> home <01004>; but David <01732> and his men

<0582> gat <05927> them up unto the hold <04686>.

1Samuel 25

 1. And Samuel <08050> died <04191>; and all <03605> the

Israelites <03478> were gathered <06908> together, and lamented

<05594> him, and buried <06912> him in his house <01004> at

Ramah <07414>. And David <01732> arose <06965>, and went <03381>

down <03381> to the wilderness <04057> of Paran <06290>.

 2. And [there was] a man <0376> in Maon <04584>, whose

possessions <04639> [were] in Carmel <03760>; and the man <0376>

[was] very <03966> great <01419>, and he had three <07969>

thousand <0505> sheep <06629>, and a thousand <0505> goats

<05795>: and he was shearing <01494> his sheep <06629> in Carmel

<03760>.

 3 Now the name <08034> of the man <0376> [was] Nabal <05037>;

and the name <08034> of his wife <0802> Abigail <026>: and [she

was] a woman <0802> of good <02896> understanding <07922>, and

of a beautiful <03303> countenance <08389>: but the man <0376>

[was] churlish <07186> and evil <07451> in his doings <04611>;

and he [was] of the house <01004> of Caleb <03612>.

4 And David <01732> heard <08085> in the wilderness <04057>

that Nabal <05037> did shear <01494> his sheep <06629>.

 5 And David <01732> sent <07971> out ten <06235> young <05288>

men, and David <01732> said <0559> unto the young <05288> men,

Get <05927> you up to Carmel <03760>, and go <0935> to Nabal

<05037>, and greet him in my name <08034>:

6 And thus <03541> shall ye say <0559> to him that liveth

<02416> [in prosperity], Peace <07965> [be] both to thee, and

peace <07965> [be] to thine house <01004>, and peace <07965>

[be] unto all <03605> that thou hast.

7 And now <06258> I have heard <08085> that thou hast shearers

<01494>: now thy shepherds <07462> which <0834> were with us, we

hurt <03637> them not, neither <03808> was there ought <03972>

missing <06485> unto them, all <03605> the while <03117> they

were in Carmel <03760>.

8 Ask <07592> thy young <05288> men, and they will shew <05046>

thee. Wherefore let the young <05288> men find <04672> favour

<02580> in thine eyes <05869>: for we come <0935> in a good

<02896> day <03117>: give <05414>, I pray <04994> thee,

whatsoever cometh <04672> to thine hand <03027> unto thy

servants <05650>, and to thy son <01121> David <01732>.

 9 And when David's <01732> young <05288> men came <0935>, they

spake <01696> to Nabal <05037> according to all <03605> those

<0428> nwords <01697> in the name <08034> of David <01732>, and

ceased <05117>.

 10 And Nabal <05037> answered <06030> David's <01732> servants

<05650>, and said <0559>, Who <04310> [is] David <01732>? and

who <04310> [is] the son <01121> of Jesse <03448>? there be many

<07231> servants <05650> now a days <03117> that break <06555>

away every man <0376> from his master <0113>.

11 Shall I then take <03947> my bread <03899>, and my water

<04325>, and my flesh <02878> that I have killed <02873> for my

shearers <01494>, and give <05414> [it] unto men <0582>, whom

<0834> I know <03045> not whence they [be]?

 12. So David's <01732> young <05288> men turned <02015> their

way <01870>, and went <07725> again <07725>, and came <0935> and

told <05046> him all <03605> those <0428> sayings <01697>.

13 And David <01732> said <0559> unto his men <0582>, Gird

<02296> ye on every man <0376> his sword <02719>. And they

girded <02296> on every man <0376> his sword <02719>; and David

<01732> also <01571> girded <02296> on his sword <02719>: and

there went <05927> up after <0310> David <01732> about four

<0702> hundred <03967> men <0376>; and two hundred <03967> abode

<03427> by the stuff <03627>.

14 But one <0259> of the young <05288> men told <05046> Abigail

<026>, Nabal's <05037> wife <0802>, saying <0559>, Behold

<02009>, David <01732> sent <07971> messengers <04397> out of

the wilderness <04057> to salute <01288> our master <0113>; and

he railed <05860> on them.

15 But the men <0582> [were] very <03966> good <02896> unto us,

and we were not hurt <03637>, neither <03808> missed <06485> we

any <03972> thing, as long <03117> as we were conversant <01980>

with them, when we were in the fields <07704>:

16 They were a wall <02346> unto us both <01571> by night

<03915> and day <03119>, all <03605> the while <03117> we were

with them keeping <07462> the sheep <06629>.

17 Now <06258> therefore know <03045> and consider <07200> what

<04100> thou wilt do <06213>; for evil <07451> is determined

<03615> against <0413> our master <0113>, and against <05921>

all <03605> his household <01004>: for he [is such] a son

<01121> of Belial <01100>, that [a man] cannot speak <01696> to

him.

 18. Then Abigail <026> made haste <04116>, and took <03947> two

hundred <03967> loaves <03899>, and two <08147> bottles <05035>

of wine <03196>, and five <02568> sheep <06629> ready dressed

<06213>, and five <02568> measures <05429> of parched <07039>

[corn], and an hundred <03967> clusters <06778> of raisins

<06778>, and two hundred <03967> cakes <01690> of figs, and laid

<07760> [them] on <05921> asses <02543>.

19 And she said <0559> unto her servants <05288>, Go <05674> on

before <06440> me; behold <02005>, I come <0935> after <0310>

you. But she told <05046> not her husband <0376> Nabal <05037>.

20 And it was [so, as] she rode <07392> on <05921> the ass

<02543>, that she came <03381> down <03381> by the covert

<05643> of the hill <02022>, and, behold <02009>, David <01732>

and his men <0582> came <03381> down <03381> against <07125> her;

 and she met <06298> them.

 21 Now David <01732> had <01961> said <0559>, Surely <0389> in

vain <08267> have I kept <08104> all <03605> that this <02088>

[fellow] hath in the wilderness <04057>, so that nothing was

missed <06485> of all <03605> that [pertained] unto him: and he

hath requited <07725> me evil <07451> for good <02896>.

 22 So <03541> and more <03254> also <03541> do <06213> God

<0430> unto the enemies <0341> of David <01732>, if <0518> I

leave <07604> of all <03605> that [pertain] to him by the

morning <01242> light <0216> any that pisseth <08366> against

the wall <07023>.

23 And when Abigail <026> saw <07200> David <01732>, she hasted

<04116>, and lighted <03381> off <05921> the ass <02543>, and

fell <05307> before <0639> David <01732> on <05921> her face

<06440>, and bowed <07812> herself to the ground <0776>,

24 And fell <05307> at <05921> his feet <07272>, and said

<0559>, Upon me, my lord <0113>, [upon] me [let this] iniquity

<05771> [be]: and let thine handmaid <0519>, I pray <04994> thee,

speak <01696> in thine audience <0241>, and hear <08085> the

words <01697> of thine handmaid <0519>.

 25 Let not my lord <0113>, I pray <04994> thee, regard <03820>

this <02088> man <0376> of Belial <01100>, [even] Nabal <05037>:

for as his name <08034> [is], so <03651> [is] he; Nabal <05037>

[is] his name <08034>, and folly <05039> [is] with him: but I

thine handmaid <0519> saw <07200> not the young <05288> men of

my lord <0113>, whom <0834> thou didst send <07971>.

26 Now <06258> therefore, my lord <0113>, [as] the LORD <03068>

liveth <02416>, and [as] thy soul <05315> liveth <02416>, seeing

the LORD <03068> hath withholden <04513> thee from coming <0935>

to [shed] blood <01818>, and from avenging <03467> thyself with

thine own hand <03027>, now <06258> let thine enemies <0341>,

and they that seek <01245> evil <07451> to my lord <0113>, be as

Nabal <05037>.

 27 And now <06258> this <02063> blessing <01293> which <0834>

thine handmaid <08198> hath brought <0935> unto my lord <0113>,

let it even be given <05414> unto the young <05288> men that

follow my lord <0113>.

 28 I pray <04994> thee, forgive <05375> the trespass <08588> of

thine handmaid <0519>: for the LORD <03068> will certainly make

<06213> my lord <0113> a sure <0539> house <01004>; because

<03588> my lord <0113> fighteth <03898> the battles <04421> of

the LORD <03068>, and evil <07451> hath not been found <04672>

in thee [all] thy days <03117>.

 29 Yet a man <0120> is risen <06965> to pursue <07291> thee,

and to seek <01245> thy soul <05315>: but the soul <05315> of my

lord <0113> shall be bound <06887> in the bundle <06872> of life

<02416> with the LORD <03068> thy God <0430>; and the souls

<05315> of thine enemies <0341>, them shall he sling <07049> out,

[as out] of the middle <08432> of a sling <07050>.

30 And it shall come <01961> to pass, when <03588> the LORD

<03068> shall have done <06213> to my lord <0113> according to

all <03605> the good <02896> that he hath spoken <01696>

concerning <05921> thee, and shall have appointed <06680> thee

ruler <05057> over Israel <03478>;

31 That this <02063> shall be no <03808> grief <06330> unto

thee, nor offence <04383> of heart <03820> unto my lord <0136>,

either that thou hast shed <08210> blood <01818> causeless

<02600>, or that my lord <0136> hath avenged <03467> himself:

but when the LORD <03068> shall have dealt well <03190> with my

lord <0113>, then remember <02142> thine handmaid <0519>.

 32. And David <01732> said <0559> to Abigail <026>, Blessed

<01288> [be] the LORD <03068> God <0430> of Israel <03478>,

which <0834> sent <07971> thee this <02088> day <03117> to meet

<07125> me:

33 And blessed <01288> [be] thy advice <02940>, and blessed

<01288> [be] thou, which <0834> hast kept <03607> me this

<02088> day <03117> from coming <0935> to [shed] blood <01818>,

and from avenging <03467> myself with mine own hand <03027>.

34 For in very <0199> deed <0199>, [as] the LORD <03068> God

<0430> of Israel <03478> liveth <02416>, which <0834> hath kept

<04513> me back <04513> from hurting <07489> thee, except thou

hadst hasted <04116> and come <0935> to meet <07125> me, surely

there had not been left <03498> unto Nabal <05037> by the

morning <01242> light <0216> any that pisseth <08366> against

the wall <02346>.

35 So David <01732> received <03947> of her hand <03027> [that]

which <0834> she had brought <0935> him, and said <0559> unto

her, Go <05927> up in peace <07965> to thine house <01004>; see

<07200>, I have hearkened <08085> to thy voice <06963>, and have

accepted <05375> thy person <06440>.

 36. And Abigail <026> came <0935> to Nabal <05037>; and, behold

<02009>, he held a feast <04960> in his house <01004>, like the

feast <04960> of a king <04428>; and Nabal's <05037> heart

<03820> [was] merry <02896> within <05921> him, for he [was]

very drunken <07910>: wherefore she told <05046> him nothing,

less <06996> or more <01490>, until <05704> the morning <01242>

light <0216>.

37 But it came <01916> to pass in the morning <01242>, when the

wine <03196> was gone <03318> out of Nabal <05037>, and his wife

<0802> had told <05046> him these things <01697>, that his heart

<03820> died <04191> within <07130> him, and he became <01961>

[as] a stone <068>.

38 And it came <01916> to pass about ten <06235> days <03117>

[after], that the LORD <03068> smote <05062> Nabal <05037>, that

he died <04191>.

39 And when David <01732> heard <08085> that Nabal <05037> was

dead <04191>, he said <0559>, Blessed <01288> [be] the LORD

<03068>, that hath pleaded <07378> the cause <07379> of my

reproach <02781> from the hand <03027> of Nabal <05037>, and

hath kept <02820> his servant <05650> from evil <07451>: for the

LORD <03068> hath returned <07725> the wickedness <07451> of

Nabal <05037> upon his own head <07218>. And David <01732> sent

<07971> and communed <01696> with Abigail <026>, to take <03947>

her to him to wife <0802>.

40 And when the servants <05650> of David <01732> were come

<0935> to Abigail <026> to Carmel <03760>, they spake <01696>

unto her, saying <0559>, David <01732> sent <07971> us unto thee,

to take <03947> thee to him to wife <0802>.

41 And she arose <06965>, and bowed <07812> herself on [her]

face <0639> to the earth <0776>, and said <0559>, Behold <02009>,

[let] thine handmaid <0519> [be] a servant <05650> to wash

<07364> the feet <07272> of the servants <05650> of my lord

<0113>.

42 And Abigail <026> hasted <04116>, and arose <06965>, and

rode <07392> upon an ass <02543>, with five <02568> damsels

<05291> of hers that went <01980> after <07272> her; and she

went <03212> after <0310> the messengers <04397> of David

<01732>, and became <01961> his wife <0802>.

43 David <01732> also took <03947> Ahinoam <0293> of Jezreel

<03157>; and they were also both <08147> of them his wives

<0802>.

44 But Saul <07586> had given <05414> Michal <04324> his

daughter <01323>, David's <01732> wife <0802>, to Phalti <06406>

the son <01121> of Laish <03919>, which <0834> [was] of Gallim

<01554>.

1Samuel 26

 1. And the Ziphites <02130> came <0935> unto Saul <07586> to

Gibeah <01390>, saying <0559>, Doth not David <01732> hide

<05641> himself in the hill <01389> of Hachilah <02444>, [which

<0834> is] before Jeshimon <03452>?

2 Then Saul <07586> arose <06965>, and went <03381> down

<03381> to the wilderness <04057> of Ziph <02128>, having three

<07969> thousand <0505> chosen <0970> men <0376> of Israel

<03478> with him, to seek <01245> David <01732> in the

wilderness <04057> of Ziph <02128>.

3 And Saul <07586> pitched <02583> in the hill <01389> of

Hachilah <02444>, which <0834> [is] before Jeshimon, by the way

<01870>. But David <01732> abode <03427> in the wilderness

<04057>, and he saw <07200> that Saul <07586> came <0935> after

<0310> him into the wilderness <04057>.

4 David <01732> therefore sent <07971> out spies <07270>, and

understood <03045> that Saul <07586> was come <0935> in very

<03559> deed <03559>.

5 And David <01732> arose <06965>, and came <0935> to the place

<04725> where Saul <07586> had pitched <02583>: and David

<01732> beheld <07200> the place <04725> where Saul <07586> lay

<07901>, and Abner <074> the son <01121> of Ner <05369>, the

captain <08269> of his host <06635>: and Saul <07586> lay

<07901> in the trench <04570>, and the people <05971> pitched

<02583> round <05439> about him.

 6. Then answered <06030> David <01732> and said <0559> to

Ahimelech <0288> the Hittite <02850>, and to Abishai <052> the

son <01121> of Zeruiah <06870>, brother <0251> to Joab <03097>,

saying <0559>, Who <04310> will go <03381> down <03381> with me

to Saul <07586> to the camp <04264>? And Abishai <052> said

<0559>, I will go <03381> down <03381> with thee.

7 So David <01732> and Abishai <052> came <0935> to the people

<05971> by night <03915>: and, behold <02009>, Saul <07586> lay

<07901> sleeping <03463> within the trench <04570>, and his

spear <02595> stuck <04600> in the ground <0776> at his bolster

<04763>: but Abner <074> and the people <05971> lay <07901>

round <05439> about him.

 8 Then said <0559> Abishai <052> to David <01732>, God <0430>

hath delivered <05462> thine enemy <0341> into thine hand

<03027> this day <03117>: now <06258> therefore let me smite

<05221> him, I pray <04994> thee, with the spear <02595> even to

the earth <0776> at once, and I will not [smite] him the second

<08138> time.

9 And David <01732> said <0559> to Abishai <052>, Destroy

<07843> him not: for who <04310> can stretch <07971> forth his

hand <03027> against the LORD'S <03068> anointed <04899>, and be

guiltless <05352>?

10 David <01732> said <0559> furthermore, [As] the LORD <03068>

liveth <02416>, the LORD <03068> shall smite <05062> him; or

<0176> his day <03117> shall come <0935> to die <04191>; or he

shall descend <03381> into battle <04421>, and perish <05595>.

11 The LORD <03068> forbid <02486> that I should stretch

<07971> forth mine hand <03027> against the LORD'S <03068>

anointed <04899>: but, I pray <04994> thee, take <03947> thou

now <06258> the spear <02595> that [is] at his bolster <04763>,

and the cruse <06835> of water <04325>, and let us go <03212>.

12 So David <01732> took <03947> the spear <02595> and the

cruse <06835> of water <04325> from Saul's <07586> bolster

<04763>; and they gat <03212> them away <03212>, and no <0369>

man saw <07200> [it], nor <0369> knew <03045> [it], neither

<0369> awaked <06974>: for they [were] all <03605> asleep

<03463>; because <03588> a deep <08639> sleep <08639> from the

LORD <0113> was fallen <05307> upon them.

 13. Then David <01732> went <05674> over <05674> to the other

<05676> side <05676>, and stood <05975> on <05921> the top

<07218> of an hill <02022> afar <07350> off; a great <07227>

space <04725> [being] between <0996> them:

14 And David <01732> cried <07121> to the people <05971>, and

to Abner <074> the son <01121> of Ner <05369>, saying <0559>,

Answerest <06030> thou not, Abner <074>? Then Abner <074>

answered <06030> and said <0559>, Who <04310> [art] thou [that]

criest <07121> to the king <04428>?

15 And David <01732> said <0559> to Abner <074>, [Art] not thou

a [valiant] man <0376>? and who <04310> [is] like <03644> to

thee in Israel <03478>? wherefore <04100> then hast thou not

kept <08104> thy lord <0113> the king <04428>? for there came

<0935> one <0259> of the people <05971> in to destroy <07843>

the king <04428> thy lord <03068>.

16 This <02088> thing <01697> [is] not good <02896> that thou

hast done <06213>. [As] the LORD <03068> liveth <02416>, ye

[are] worthy <01121> to die <04194>, because <0834> ye have not

kept <08104> your master <0113>, the LORD'S <03068> anointed

<04899>. And now <06258> see <07200> where <0335> the king's

<04428> spear <02595> [is], and the cruse <06835> of water

<04325> that [was] at his bolster <04763>.

 17 And Saul <07586> knew <05234> David's <01732> voice <06963>,

and said <0559>, [Is] this <02088> thy voice <06963>, my son

<01121> David <01732>? And David <01732> said <0559>, [It is] my

voice <06963>, my lord <0113>, O king <04428>.

18 And he said <0559>, Wherefore <04100> doth my lord <0113>

thus <02088> pursue <07291> after <0310> his servant <05650>?

for what <04100> have I done <06213>? or what <04100> evil

<07451> [is] in mine hand <03027>?

19 Now <06258> therefore, I pray <04994> thee, let my lord

<0113> the king <04428> hear <08085> the words <01697> of his

servant <05650>. If <0518> the LORD <03068> have stirred <05496>

thee up against me, let him accept <07306> an offering <04503>:

but if <0518> [they be] the children <01121> of men <0120>,

cursed <0779> [be] they before <06440> the LORD <03068>; for

they have driven <01644> me out this day <03117> from abiding

<05596> in the inheritance <05159> of the LORD <03068>, saying

<0559>, Go <03212>, serve <05647> other <0312> gods <0430>.

20 Now <06258> therefore, let not my blood <01818> fall <05307>

to the earth <0776> before <05048> the face <06440> of the LORD

<03068>: for the king <04428> of Israel <03478> is come <03318>

out to seek <01245> a flea <06550>, as when <0834> one doth hunt

<07291> a partridge <07124> in the mountains <02022>.

 21. Then said <0559> Saul <07586>, I have sinned <02398>:

return <07725>, my son <01121> David <01732>: for I will no

<03808> more <05750> do thee harm <07489>, because my soul

<05315> was precious <03365> in thine eyes <05869> this <02088>

day <03117>: behold <02009>, I have played the fool <05528>, and

have erred <07683> exceedingly.

22 And David <01732> answered <06030> and said <0559>, Behold

<02009> the king's <04428> spear <02595>! and let one <0259> of

the young <05288> men come <05674> over <05674> and fetch

<03947> it.

23 The LORD <03068> render <07725> to every man <0376> his

righteousness <06666> and his faithfulness <0530>: for the LORD

<03068> delivered <05414> thee into [my] hand <03027> to day

<03117>, but I would <014> not stretch <07971> forth mine hand

<03027> against the LORD'S <03068> anointed <04899>.

24 And, behold <02009>, as thy life <05315> was much <01431>

set <01431> by this <02088> day <03117> in mine eyes <05869>, so

<03651> let my life <05315> be much <01431> set <01431> by in

the eyes <05869> of the LORD <03068>, and let him deliver

<05337> me out of all <03605> tribulation <06869>.

25 Then Saul <07586> said <0559> to David <01732>, Blessed

<01288> [be] thou, my son <01121> David <01732>: thou shalt both

<01571> do <06213> great [things], and also <01571> shalt still

prevail <03201>. So David <01732> went <03212> on his way

<01870>, and Saul <07586> returned <07725> to his place <04725>.

1Samuel 27

 1. And David <01732> said <0559> in his heart <03820>, I shall

now <06258> perish <05595> one <0259> day <03117> by the hand

<03027> of Saul <07586>: [there is] nothing <0369> better

<02896> for me than <03588> that I should speedily <04422>

escape <04422> into <0413> the land <0776> of the Philistines

<06430>; and Saul <07586> shall despair <02976> of me, to seek

<01245> me any <03605> more <05750> in any <03605> coast <01366>

of Israel <03478>: so shall I escape <04422> out of his hand

<03027>.

2 And David <01732> arose <06965>, and he passed <05674> over

<05674> with the six <08337> hundred <03967> men <0376> that

[were] with him unto Achish <0397>, the son <01121> of Maoch

<04582>, king <04428> of Gath <01661>.

3 And David <01732> dwelt <03427> with Achish <0397> at Gath

<01661>, he and his men <0582>, every man <0376> with his

household <01004>, [even] David <01732> with his two <08147>

wives <0802>, Ahinoam <0293> the Jezreelitess <03159>, and

Abigail <026> the Carmelitess <03762>, Nabal's <05037> wife

<0802>.

4 And it was told <05046> Saul <07586> that David <01732> was

fled <01272> to Gath <01661>: and he sought <01245> no <03808>

more <03254> again <03254> for him.

 5 And David <01732> said <0559> unto Achish <0397>, If <0518> I

have now <04994> found <04672> grace <02580> in thine eyes

<05869>, let them give <05414> me a place <04725> in some <0259>

town <05892> in the country <07704>, that I may dwell <03427>

there <08033>: for why <04100> should thy servant <05650> dwell

<03427> in the royal <04467> city <05892> with thee?

6 Then Achish <0397> gave <05414> him Ziklag <06860> that day

<03117>: wherefore <03651> Ziklag <06860> pertaineth <01961>

unto the kings <04428> of Judah <03063> unto this <02088> day

<03117>.

7 And the time that David <01732> dwelt <03427> in the country

<07704> of the Philistines <06430> was a full <03117> year and

four <0702> months <02320>.

 8. And David <01732> and his men <0582> went <05927> up, and

invaded <06584> the Geshurites <01651>, and the Gezrites <01511>,

and the Amalekites <06003>: for those <02007> [nations were] of

old <05769> the inhabitants <03427> of the land <0776>, as thou

goest <0935> to Shur <07793>, even unto the land <0776> of Egypt

<04714>.

9 And David <01732> smote <05221> the land <0776>, and left

neither <03608> man <0376> nor woman <0802> alive <02421>, and

took <03947> away the sheep <06629>, and the oxen <01241>, and

the asses <02543>, and the camels <01581>, and the apparel

<0899>, and returned <07725>, and came <0935> to Achish <0397>.

 10 And Achish <0397> said <0559>, Whither <0413> have ye made a

road <06584> to day <03117>? And David <01732> said <0559>,

Against <05921> the south <05045> of Judah <03063>, and against

<05921> the south <05045> of the Jerahmeelites <03397>, and

against <0413> the south <05045> of the Kenites <07017>.

 11 And David <01732> saved <02421> neither <03608> man <0376>

nor woman <0802> alive <02421>, to bring <0935> [tidings] to

Gath <01661>, saying <0559>, Lest <06435> they should tell

<05046> on <05921> us, saying <0559>, So <03541> did <06213>

David <01732>, and so <03541> [will be] his manner <03541> all

<03605> the while <03117> he dwelleth <03427> in the country

<07704> of the Philistines <06430>.

 12 And Achish <0397> believed <0539> David <01732>, saying

<0559>, He hath made his people <05971> Israel <03478> utterly

to abhor <0887> him; therefore he shall be my servant <05650>

for ever <05769>.

1Samuel 28

 1. And it came <01961> to pass in those <01992> days <03117>,

that the Philistines <06430> gathered <06908> their armies

<04264> together for warfare <06635>, to fight <03898> with

Israel <03478>. And Achish <0397> said <0559> unto David <01732>,

Know <03045> thou assuredly <03045>, that thou shalt go <03318>

out with me to battle <04264>, thou and thy men <0582>.

2 And David <01732> said <0559> to Achish <0397>, Surely

<03651> thou shalt know <03045> what thy servant <05650> can do

<06213>. And Achish <0397> said <0559> to David <01732>,

Therefore will I make <07760> thee keeper <08104> of mine head

<07218> for ever.

3 Now Samuel <08050> was dead <04191>, and all <03605> Israel

<03478> had lamented <05594> him, and buried <06912> him in

Ramah <07414>, even in his own city <05892>. And Saul <07586>

had put <05493> away <05493> those <01992> that had familiar

spirits <0178>, and the wizards <03049>, out of the land <0776>.

4 And the Philistines <06430> gathered <06908> themselves

together, and came <0935> and pitched <02583> in Shunem <07766>:

and Saul <07586> gathered <06908> all <03605> Israel <03478>

together, and they pitched <02583> in Gilboa <01533>.

5 And when Saul <07586> saw <07200> the host <04264> of the

Philistines <06430>, he was afraid <03372>, and his heart

<03820> greatly <03966> trembled <02729>.

6 And when Saul <07586> enquired <07592> of the LORD <03068>,

the LORD <03068> answered <06030> him not, neither <01571> by

dreams <02472>, nor <01571> by Urim <0224>, nor <01571> by

prophets <05030>.

 7. Then said <0559> Saul <07586> unto his servants <05650>,

Seek <01245> me a woman <0802> that hath <01172> a familiar

spirit <0178>, that I may go <03212> to her, and enquire <01875>

of her. And his servants <05650> said <0559> to him, Behold

<02009>, [there is] a woman <0802> that hath <01172> a familiar

spirit <0178> at Endor <05874>.

8 And Saul <07586> disguised <02664> himself, and put <03847>

on other <0312> raiment <0899>, and he went <03212>, and two

<08147> men <0582> with him, and they came <0935> to the woman

<0802> by night <03915>: and he said <0559>, I pray <04994> thee,

divine <07080> unto me by the familiar spirit <0178>, and bring

<05927> me [him] up, whom I shall name <0559> unto thee.

9 And the woman <0802> said <0559> unto him, Behold <02009>,

thou knowest <03045> what Saul <07586> hath done <06213>, how he

hath cut <03772> off those that have familiar spirits <0178>,

and the wizards <03049>, out of the land <0776>: wherefore

<04100> then layest thou a snare <05367> for my life <05315>, to

cause me to die <04191>?

10 And Saul <07586> sware <07650> to her by the LORD <03068>,

saying <0559>, [As] the LORD <03068> liveth <02416>, there shall

no <0518> punishment <05771> happen <07136> to thee for this

<02088> thing <01697>.

11 Then said <0559> the woman <0802>, Whom shall I bring

<05927> up unto thee? And he said <0559>, Bring <05927> me up

Samuel <08050>.

12 And when the woman <0802> saw <07200> Samuel <08050>, she

cried <02199> with a loud <01419> voice <06963>: and the woman

<0802> spake <0559> to Saul <07586>, saying <0559>, Why <04100>

hast thou deceived <07411> me? for thou [art] Saul <07586>.

13 And the king <04428> said <0559> unto her, Be not afraid

<03372>: for what <04100> sawest <07200> thou? And the woman

<0802> said <0559> unto Saul <07586>, I saw <07200> gods <0430>

ascending <05927> out of the earth <0776>.

14 And he said <0559> unto her, What <04100> form <08389> [is]

he of? And she said <0559>, An old <02205> man <0376> cometh

<05927> up; and he [is] covered <05844> with a mantle <04598>.

And Saul <07586> perceived <03045> that it [was] Samuel <08050>,

and he stooped <06915> with [his] face <0639> to the ground

<0776>, and bowed <07812> himself.

 15. And Samuel <08050> said <0559> to Saul <07586>, Why <04100>

hast thou disquieted <07264> me, to bring <05927> me up? And

Saul <07586> answered <06030>, I am sore <03966> distressed

<06887>; for the Philistines <06430> make war <03898> against me,

and God <0430> is departed <05493> from me, and answereth

<06030> me no <03808> more, neither <01571> by prophets <05030>,

nor <01571> by dreams <02472>: therefore I have called <07121>

thee, that thou mayest make known <03045> unto me what <04100> I

shall do <06213>.

16 Then said <0559> Samuel <08050>, Wherefore <04100> then dost

thou ask <07592> of me, seeing the LORD <03068> is departed

<05493> from thee, and is become <01961> thine enemy <06145>?

17 And the LORD <03068> hath done <06213> to him, as he spake

<01696> by me: for the LORD <03068> hath rent <07167> the

kingdom <04467> out of thine hand <03027>, and given <05414> it

to thy neighbour <07453>, [even] to David <01732>:

18 Because <0834> thou obeyedst <08085> not the voice <06963>

of the LORD <03068>, nor <03808> executedst <06213> his fierce

<02740> wrath <0639> upon Amalek <06002>, therefore hath the

LORD <03068> done <06213> this <02088> thing <01697> unto thee

this <02088> day <03117>.

19 Moreover <01571> the LORD <03068> will also <01571> deliver

<05414> Israel <03478> with thee into the hand <03027> of the

Philistines <06430>: and to morrow <04279> [shalt] thou and thy

sons <01121> [be] with me: the LORD <03068> also <01571> shall

deliver <05414> the host <04264> of Israel <03478> into the hand

<03027> of the Philistines <06430>.

 20. Then Saul <07586> fell <05307> straightway <04116> all

<04393> along on the earth <0776>, and was sore <03966> afraid

<03372>, because of the words <01697> of Samuel <08050>: and

there was no <03808> strength <03581> in him; for he had eaten

<0398> no <03808> bread <03899> all <03605> the day <03117>, nor

all <03605> the night <03915>.

21 And the woman <0802> came <0935> unto Saul <07586>, and saw

<07200> that he was sore <03966> troubled <0926>, and said

<0559> unto him, Behold <02009>, thine handmaid <08198> hath

obeyed <08085> thy voice <06963>, and I have put <07760> my life

<05315> in my hand <03709>, and have hearkened <08085> unto thy

words <01697> which <0834> thou spakest <01696> unto me.

 22 Now <06258> therefore, I pray <04994> thee, hearken <08085>

thou also <01571> unto the voice <06963> of thine handmaid

<08198>, and let me set <07760> a morsel <06595> of bread

<03899> before <06440> thee; and eat <0398>, that thou mayest

have strength <03581>, when <03588> thou goest <03212> on thy

way <01870>.

23 But he refused <03985>, and said <0559>, I will not eat

<0398>. But his servants <05650>, together with the woman <0802>,

compelled <06555> him; and he hearkened <08085> unto their

voice <06963>. So he arose <06965> from the earth <0776>, and

sat <03427> upon the bed <04296>.

24 And the woman <0802> had a fat <04770> calf <05695> in the

house <01004>; and she hasted <04116>, and killed <02076> it,

and took <03947> flour <07058>, and kneaded <03888> [it], and

did bake <0644> unleavened <04682> bread thereof:

25 And she brought <05066> [it] before <06440> Saul <07586>,

and before <06440> his servants <05650>; and they did eat <0398>.

Then they rose <06965> up, and went <03212> away that night

<03915>.

1Samuel 29

 1. Now the Philistines <06430> gathered <06908> together all

<03605> their armies <04264> to Aphek <0663>: and the Israelites

<03478> pitched <02583> by a fountain <05869> which <0834> [is]

in Jezreel <03157>.

2 And the lords <05633> of the Philistines <06430> passed

<05674> on by hundreds <03967>, and by thousands <0505>: but

David <01732> and his men <0582> passed <05674> on in the

rereward <0314> with Achish <0397>.

3 Then said <0559> the princes <08269> of the Philistines

<06430>, What <04100> [do] these <0428> Hebrews <05680> [here]?

And Achish <0397> said <0559> unto the princes <08269> of the

Philistines <06430>, [Is] not this <02088> David <01732>, the

servant <05650> of Saul <07586> the king <04428> of Israel

<03478>, which <0834> hath been <01961> with me these <02088>

days <03117>, or <0176> these <02088> years <08141>, and I have

found <04672> no <03808> fault <03972> in him since he fell

<05307> [unto me] unto this <02088> day <03117>?

4 And the princes <08269> of the Philistines <06430> were wroth

<07107> with him; and the princes <08269> of the Philistines

<06430> said <0559> unto him, Make this fellow <0376> return

<07725>, that he may go <07725> again <07725> to his place

<04725> which <0834> thou hast appointed <06485> him, and let

him not go <03381> down <03381> with us to battle <04421>, lest

<03808> in the battle <04421> he be an adversary <07854> to us:

for wherewith <04100> should he reconcile <07521> himself unto

his master <0113>? [should it] not [be] with the heads <07218>

of these <01992> men <0582>?

5 [Is] not this <02088> David <01732>, of whom <0834> they sang

<06030> one to another in dances <04246>, saying <0559>, Saul

<07586> slew <05221> his thousands <07233>, and David <01732>

his ten <07233> thousands <0505>?

 6. Then Achish <0397> called <07121> David <01732>, and said

<0559> unto him, Surely, [as] the LORD <03068> liveth <02416>,

thou hast been upright <03477>, and thy going <03318> out and

thy coming <0935> in with me in the host <04264> [is] good

<02896> in my sight <05869>: for I have not found <04672> evil

<07451> in thee since the day <03117> of thy coming <0935> unto

me unto this <02088> day <03117>: nevertheless the lords <05633>

favour <02896> thee not.

7 Wherefore now <06258> return <07725>, and go <03212> in peace

<07965>, that thou displease not the lords <05633> of the

Philistines <06430>.

8 And David <01732> said <0559> unto Achish <0397>, But what

<04100> have I done <06213>? and what <04100> hast thou found

<04672> in thy servant <05650> so long <03117> as I have been

<01961> with thee unto this <02088> day <03117>, that I may not

go <03212> fight <03898> against the enemies <0341> of my lord

<0113> the king <04428>?

9 And Achish <0397> answered <06030> and said <0559> to David

<01732>, I know <03045> that thou [art] good <02896> in my sight

<05869>, as an angel of God <0430>: notwithstanding <0389> the

princes <08269> of the Philistines <06430> have said <0559>, He

shall not go <05927> up with us to the battle <04421>.

10 Wherefore now <06258> rise <07925> up early <07925> in the

morning <01242> with thy master's <0113> servants <05650> that

are come <0935> with thee: and as soon as ye be up early <07925>

in the morning <01242>, and have light <0216>, depart <03212>.

11 So David <01732> and his men <0582> rose <07925> up early

<07925> to depart <03212> in the morning <01242>, to return

<07725> into <0413> the land <0776> of the Philistines <06430>.

And the Philistines <06430> went <05927> up to Jezreel <03157>.

1Samuel 30

 1. And it came <01961> to pass, when David <01732> and his men

<0582> were come <0935> to Ziklag <06860> on the third <07992>

day <03117>, that the Amalekites <06003> had invaded <06584> the

south <05045>, and Ziklag <06860>, and smitten <05221> Ziklag

<06860>, and burned <08313> it with fire <0784>;

2 And had taken the women <0802> captives <07617>, that [were]

therein: they slew <04191> not any <0376>, either great <01419>

or small <06996>, but carried <05090> [them] away, and went

<03212> on their way <01870>.

3 So David <01732> and his men <0582> came <0935> to the city

<05892>, and, behold <02009>, [it was] burned <08313> with fire

<0784>; and their wives <0802>, and their sons <01121>, and

their daughters <01121>, were taken captives <07617>.

4 Then David <01732> and the people <05971> that [were] with

him lifted <05375> up their voice <06963> and wept <01058>,

until they had no <0369> more power <03581> to weep <01058>.

 5 And David's <01732> two <08147> wives <0802> were taken

captives <07617>, Ahinoam <0293> the Jezreelitess <03159>, and

Abigail <026> the wife <0802> of Nabal <05037> the Carmelite

<03761>.

6 And David <01732> was greatly <03966> distressed <03334>; for

the people <05971> spake <0559> of stoning <05619> him, because

<03588> the soul <05315> of all <03605> the people <05971> was

grieved <04784>, every man <0376> for his sons <01121> and for

his daughters <01121>: but David <01732> encouraged <02388>

himself in the LORD <03068> his God <0430>.

 7. And David <01732> said <0559> to Abiathar <054> the priest

<03548>, Ahimelech's <0288> son <01121>, I pray <04994> thee,

bring <05066> me hither <05066> the ephod <0646>. And Abiathar

<054> brought <05066> thither the ephod <0646> to David <01732>.

8 And David <01732> enquired <07592> at the LORD <03068>,

saying <0559>, Shall I pursue <07291> after <0310> this <02088>

troop <01416>? shall I overtake <05381> them? And he answered

<0559> him, Pursue <07291>: for thou shalt surely overtake

<05381> [them], and without fail recover <05337> [all].

9 So David <01732> went <03212>, he and the six <08337> hundred

<03967> men <0376> that [were] with him, and came <0935> to the

brook <05158> Besor <01308>, where those that were left <03498>

behind <03498> stayed <05975>.

10 But David <01732> pursued <07291>, he and four <0702>

hundred <03967> men <0376>: for two hundred <03967> abode

<05975> behind <05975>, which <0834> were so faint <06296> that

they could not go <05674> over <05674> the brook <05158> Besor

<01308>.

11 And they found <04672> an Egyptian <04713> in the field

<07704>, and brought <03947> him to David <01732>, and gave

<05414> him bread <03899>, and he did eat <0398>; and they made

him drink <08248> water <04325>;

 12 And they gave <05414> him a piece <06400> of a cake <01690>

of figs, and two <08147> clusters <06778> of raisins <06778>:

and when he had eaten <0398>, his spirit <07307> came <07725>

again <07725> to him: for he had eaten <0398> no <03808> bread

<03899>, nor <03808> drunk <08354> [any] water <04325>, three

<07969> days <03117> and three <07969> nights <03915>.

13 And David <01732> said <0559> unto him, To whom <04310>

[belongest] thou? and whence [art] thou? And he said <0559>, I

[am] a young <05288> man of Egypt <04714>, servant <05650> to an

Amalekite <06003>; and my master <0113> left <05800> me, because

<03588> three <07969> days agone I fell sick <02470>.

14 We made an invasion <06584> [upon] the south <05045> of the

Cherethites <03774>, and upon [the coast] which <0834>

[belongeth] to Judah <03063>, and upon the south <05045> of

Caleb <03612>; and we burned <08313> Ziklag <06860> with fire

<0784>.

15 And David <01732> said <0559> to him, Canst thou bring

<03381> me down <03381> to this <02088> company <01416>? And he

said <0559>, Swear <07650> unto me by God <0430>, that thou wilt

neither <0518> kill <04191> me, nor <0518> deliver <05462> me

into the hands <03027> of my master <0113>, and I will bring

<03381> thee down <03381> to this <02088> company <01416>.

16 And when he had brought <03381> him down <03381>, behold

<02009>, [they were] spread <05203> abroad <05203> upon all

<03605> the earth <0776>, eating <0398> and drinking <08354>,

and dancing <02287>, because of all <03605> the great <01419>

spoil <07998> that they had taken <03947> out of the land <0776>

of the Philistines <06430>, and out of the land <0776> of Judah

<03063>.

17 And David <01732> smote <05221> them from the twilight

<05399> even unto the evening <06153> of the next <04283> day

<04283>: and there escaped <04422> not a man <0376> of them,

save four <0702> hundred <03967> young <05288> men <0376>, which

<0834> rode <07392> upon camels <01581>, and fled <05127>.

18 And David <01732> recovered <05337> all <03605> that the

Amalekites <06003> had carried <03947> away: and David <01732>

rescued <05337> his two <08147> wives <0802>.

19 And there was nothing <03808> lacking <05737> to them,

neither <04480> small <06996> nor <05703> great <01419>, neither

<04480> sons <01121> nor <05703> daughters <01121>, neither

<04480> spoil <07998>, nor <05703> any <03605> [thing] that they

had taken <03947> to them: David <01732> recovered <07725> all

<03605>.

20 And David <01732> took <03947> all <03605> the flocks

<06629> and the herds <01241>, [which] they drave <05090> before

<06440> those <01931> [other] cattle <04735>, and said <0559>,

This <02088> [is] David's <01732> spoil <07998>.

 21. And David <01732> came <0935> to the two hundred <03967>

men <0582>, which <0834> were so faint <06296> that they could

not follow David <01732>, whom they had made also to abide

<03427> at the brook <05158> Besor <01308>: and they went

<03318> forth <03318> to meet <07125> David <01732>, and to meet

<07125> the people <05971> that [were] with him: and when David

<01732> came <05066> near <05066> to the people <05971>, he

saluted them.

22 Then answered <06030> all <03605> the wicked <07451> men

<0376> and [men] of Belial <01100>, of those that went <01980>

with David <01732>, and said <0559>, Because <03282> they went

<01980> not with us, we will not give <05414> them [ought] of

the spoil <07998> that we have recovered <05337>, save to every

man <0376> his wife <0802> and his children <01121>, that they

may lead <05090> [them] away, and depart <03212>.

23 Then said <0559> David <01732>, Ye shall not do <06213> so

<03651>, my brethren <0251>, with that which <0834> the LORD

<03068> hath given <05414> us, who hath preserved <08104> us,

and delivered <05414> the company <01416> that came <0935>

against <05921> us into our hand <03027>.

24 For who <04310> will hearken <08085> unto you in this

<02088> matter <01697>? but as his part <02506> [is] that goeth

<03381> down <03381> to the battle <04421>, so [shall] his part

<02506> [be] that tarrieth <03427> by the stuff <03627>: they

shall part <02505> alike <03162>.

25 And it was [so] from that day <03117> forward <04605>, that

he made <07760> it a statute <02706> and an ordinance <04941>

for Israel <03478> unto this <02088> day <03117>.

26 And when David <01732> came <0935> to Ziklag <06860>, he

sent <07971> of the spoil <07998> unto the elders <02205> of

Judah <03063>, [even] to his friends <07453>, saying <0559>,

Behold <02009> a present <01293> for you of the spoil <07998> of

the enemies <0341> of the LORD <03068>;

27 To [them] which <0834> [were] in Bethel <01008>, and to

[them] which <0834> [were] in south <05045> Ramoth <07418>, and

to [them] which <0834> [were] in Jattir <03492>,

28 And to [them] which <0834> [were] in Aroer <06177>, and to

[them] which <0834> [were] in Siphmoth <08224>, and to [them]

which <0834> [were] in Eshtemoa <0851>,

29 And to [them] which <0834> [were] in Rachal <07403>, and to

[them] which <0834> [were] in the cities <05892> of the

Jerahmeelites <03397>, and to [them] which <0834> [were] in the

cities <05892> of the Kenites <07017>,

30 And to [them] which <0834> [were] in Hormah <02767>, and to

[them] which <0834> [were] in Chorashan <03565>, and to [them]

which <0834> [were] in Athach <06269>,

31 And to [them] which [were] in Hebron <02275>, and to all

<03605> the places <04725> where David <01732> himself and his

men <0582> were wont <01980> to haunt <01980>.

1Samuel 31

 1. Now the Philistines <06430> fought <03898> against Israel

<03478>: and the men <0582> of Israel <03478> fled <05127> from

before <06440> the Philistines <06430>, and fell <05307> down

slain <02491> in mount <02022> Gilboa <01533>.

 2 And the Philistines <06430> followed <01692> hard <01692>

upon Saul <07586> and upon his sons <01121>; and the Philistines

<06430> slew <05221> Jonathan <03083>, and Abinadab <041>, and

Malchishua <04444>, Saul's <07586> sons <01121>.

3 And the battle <04421> went sore <03513> against <0413> Saul

<07586>, and the archers <03384> hit <04672> him; and he was

sore <03966> wounded <02342> of the archers <03384>.

4 Then said <0559> Saul <07586> unto his armourbearer <03627>,

Draw <08025> thy sword <02719>, and thrust <01856> me through

therewith; lest <06435> these <0428> uncircumcised <06189> come

<0935> and thrust <01856> me through, and abuse <05953> me. But

his armourbearer <03627> would <014> not; for he was sore

<03966> afraid <03372>. Therefore Saul <07586> took <03947> a

sword <02719>, and fell <05307> upon it.

5 And when his armourbearer <03627> saw <07200> that Saul

<07586> was dead <04191>, he fell <05307> likewise <01571> upon

his sword <02719>, and died <04191> with him.

6 So Saul <07586> died <04191>, and his three <07969> sons

<01121>, and his armourbearer <03627>, and all <03605> his men

<0582>, that same <01931> day <03117> together <03162>.

7 And when the men <0582> of Israel <03478> that [were] on the

other <05676> side <05676> of the valley <06010>, and [they]

that [were] on the other <05676> side <05676> Jordan <03383>,

saw <07200> that the men <0582> of Israel <03478> fled <05127>,

and that Saul <07586> and his sons <01121> were dead <04191>,

they forsook <05800> the cities <05892>, and fled <05127>; and

the Philistines <06430> came <0935> and dwelt <03427> in them.

 8. And it came <01691> to pass on the morrow <04283>, when the

Philistines <06430> came <0935> to strip <06584> the slain

<02491>, that they found <04672> Saul <07586> and his three

<07969> sons <01121> fallen <05307> in mount <02022> Gilboa

<01533>.

9 And they cut <03772> off his head <07218>, and stripped

<06584> off his armour <03627>, and sent <07971> into the land

<0776> of the Philistines <06430> round <05439> about, to

publish <01319> [it in] the house <01004> of their idols <06091>,

and among <0854> the people <05971>.

10 And they put <07760> his armour <03627> in the house <01004>

of Ashtaroth <06252>: and they fastened <08628> his body <01472>

to the wall <07023> of Bethshan <01052>.

11 And when the inhabitants <03427> of Jabeshgilead heard

<08085> of that which the Philistines <06430> had done <06213>

to Saul <07586>;

 12 All <03605> the valiant <02428> men <0376> arose <06965>,

and went <03212> all <03605> night <03915>, and took <03947> the

body <01472> of Saul <07586> and the bodies <01472> of his sons

<01121> from the wall <02346> of Bethshan <01052>, and came

<0935> to Jabesh <03003>, and burnt <08313> them there <08033>.

13 And they took <03947> their bones <06106>, and buried

<06912> [them] under <08478> a tree <0815> at Jabesh <03003>,

and fasted <06684> seven <07651> days <03117>.
